@northlanderdude its not the traction thats the issue here, when the train arcs it looses alot of power so the train cant accelerate all electric trains have the same issue when it comes to snow & ice.
@northlanderdude Think you guys are confusing Traction and wheelslip. In rail terms , loss of traction isnt loss of grip but a loss in motor output. Low/poor rail adhesion is the term used to explain loss of grip to the rail. So loss of traction in this case would mean poor acceleration to to the motors being inhibited by the Lims or by the MCBs tripping in and out.
@northlanderdude arcing is when the current from the live rail gets disturbed by ice causing the arcing, the ice still allows the electricity to travel to the train but the shoe running along the rail will arc and the train is unable to accelerate as it can severely damage the motors and shoe.
Wudnt go nowhere in this exceptional situation. S Glos, my buses and trains all cancelled. Mobile coverage + Broadband slower than ever, best times not good. First time I saw a pub toilet feeze and cant flush. Swedish survival phrase Var fins kemiska toaleten asked in UK LOL
@WILKO50 Hi Thanks for your comments! The camera is Panasonic HDC-SD9 - recording onto SD card so no moving parts while recording. I am very pleased with it!
@greenkougar I've got the exact same camera as you, and likewise i am also very pleased with it having no moving parts as well as using standard connectors for the essential inputs and outputs. Of course one of the first things i shot with it was a freight train and i uploaded it to youtube. All within the hour, fantastic little peice of gadgetry and on that note a fantastic video there mate! We are in the process of gettng electric overhead wires installed in this city (Auckland, New Zealand)
Modern techno bollox for you,i suppose they didnt think snow would get on the power rail, maybe they should fit a blade in front of the pick ups to clear the snow?
Not normally no. What can and has happened in the past though is that severe arcing can result in the collector shoe becoming welded to the third rail.
Is there a possibilty of some form of current creep-perhaps a few meters?.The reason I ask ,my cousin worked on the Newcastle-Tynemouth third rail line, years ago, before it was converted to the Metro.
He said he was working on the ballast,in v heavy rain, and the crew wore long heavy waterproofs. He reckoned every five-ten mins he experienced somthing similar to a punch to the back of neck.He thought it was someone. Then they all realised it was the current creeping up the rain
I suppose it could be possible but I doubt it would "leak" current sufficiently to adversely affect the traction voltage. Pure water on it's own is not a brilliant conductor, it's usually what is contained in the water which makes it a good conductor.
yes it could happen, with overhead lines you can feel it in your eyes during fine lite rain,it also raises the chance of arcing, through you to ground, you wont survive.!!!!!!!!!!!
It depends on the voltage of the line, becuae for every kV of electricity, it can jump 1cm, as well as the conditions of the conductor. It may be possible that his coat came into contact with the live rail and the water, mixed with the fabric of the waterproofs conducted the electricity.
Pretty cool stuff greenkougar.I'm a Canadian living over here in the UK since 2002. In Canada that snow would be considered Light to Moderate snow and nothing to be too concerned with.
Your video is very interesting and something I will show my family back home.Take care and all the best.
wow. This is an awesome video. The sparking is really quite nice. I dont usually see this since we have overhead wires here in Canada so it doesn't usually arc during winter. There isnt usually any build up on the wires so the trains run fine.
Hi there i work for network rail, great vid , the sparks are caused by excessive snow causing poor or loss of contact with the pick shoes of the train and the conductor rail at 750 V DC, alot of rolling stock that day actually became welded to the track as a result of this, despite the advance weather warnings by the met office , network rail fucked it up again, but spare a thought for us poor guys who were out in force clearing snow from points .
Nice little disco on the station platform. Nice. :D! x]

surprised to see that 3rd rail isn't raised and partially covered like they are on the Toronto Subway.
the engineer should have turned on the sander for traction.

@AceFilmTrailers how is it not the traction if it arcs, arcs is a loss of traction, especially in ice and snow.

Live rail? Don't they use the standard panthografs? Isn't it more dangerous?
socram8888 1 year ago
@socram8888 down south they use the 3rd or 4th rail to power the trains, anywhere north of london is mostly overhead line which uses pans
