  • I play slot cars, but I totally "get" the whole model aeroplane thing.

I've flown virtual aircraft in games, so I'd like to have a go @ the "real" thing. It's just a little bit out of my price range ATM.

  • "yes even one is radio controlled"

"yes the iphone even makes calls"

  • I think Al-Qaida might hijack one of these airplanes and that US should attack a random country.

  • @sinojtjej Germany first!

  • catseyes john cunningham, war time ace and judge, perfeto!!!!

  • 5:54 answered my thought

  • 9:22 he's even flying lower upside down than i see people do with almoast unlimited better airplanes

  • 2:46: "Yes, would You believe it?!?! ...one is even radio controlled!!!" :-) LOL

  • I wan't the commentator to narrate my life!

  • I h8 the way so many people think this hobby is a joke, and that it is all for people that live at home with there mums!

  • @SuperPianowizard You're totally right mate, I used to hide the fact I was into model planes, but I don't now, I get loads of stick of people at work for my 'geeky' hobby, but I don't care anymore, I enjoy it and thats all that matters.

  • @bankslord Sorry to taking for ever to respond, i have a new account.. XtremeRCTV anway.. i totally agree i can't be bothered to deny it anymore, its just to much fun!

  • @SuperPianowizard I was thinking about it recently and its funny. All the people who take the mick all play xbox or playstation, which to me is just the same as RC (just not as involved or as skilled!) - a simulation of the real thing. They still don't get it though, although with all their questions 'how much does it cost?' 'how easy is it?' 'where do you fly them?' ....I have a feeling they want to have a go themselves but think its not 'cool' enough....unlike modern warfare 3.....

  • @bankslord I know... Everyone seems to be going crazy over Xbox and the new Modern warfare 3... It takes one person to say, "oh thats weird" and then everyone else follows... half of the people that play Xbox only do it because their mate does... If people just had a go at flying model planes i'm sure they'll realise how much fun it is being outside, socializing with friends and flying at the same time.. People don't know what they are missing.... on the upside adleast more flying time for us :P

  • Thats wen the parts were cheap now they are over a few hundred pounds!

  • 素晴らしい模型飛行機の歴史ですね~~~

    私も若い頃似たようなことしていました。

  • good thing that the world has evolved, they look like a bunch of stupid people..

  • @georgebt On the contrary, the world has evolved into a bunch of stupid people.

  • "The cream of the country's midget plane designers" hahaha...This is a great slogan!!

  • No niggers :(

  • back in the days of "real" model aeroplanes. not ready-to-fly super happy foam chinese battery power planes.

  • Comment removed

  • The old good time teh planes no needs a TX.

  • WoW! Cool video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Wow....what memories. I used to fly back in the 1960s and was big into U-Control and a little free flight. R/C back then was outrageously expensive and touchy. I had a Controlaire single channel setup and it was a iffy proposition to be sure. Never sure if the plane would crash or not. At the very end of the video, I saw a Sterling R/C aircraft that I remember being available as a kit...............we have advanced so much in the decades since. I'm now learning to fly a T-28 Parkzone foamie.....

  • look at how far we have come i fly faster and more efficiently with balsa wood and foam lol. this is fantastic, thanks for sharing bomberguy

  • i'd look like a fool carrying out my great planes cherokee and flying it with a box with a few knobs and a giant antenea i stole from somebodys roof.

  • WOW ONE IS EVEN RADIO CONTROL :D

  • Question, how were they controlled?

They look like they are controlled, with the loops and whatnot.

  • Great clips-thanks for posting

  • 1:52? 1:52

  • check out the gay run at 1:52

  • Cool Video! It's an R/C archive.

  • Hahaa, I can't imagine doing some of that. Spend 4 months building a big wooden model airplane, only to fire up that little petrol engine, let the whole thing go, and wonder if you'd ever see any of it in once piece again. And did anyone else see that kid catch the model right out of the air!? Hahaa, crazy stuff!

  • Solenoid RC wow!!!!!!

  • This is how model aviation should be

  • Control line looks boooooring ....

I'd prefer the free flight any day.

Some of that shit looked dangerous.

  • Absolutely love it....

  • i love the smell of nitro in the morning.

  • cox engines. you can see them.

damn, rc was expensive and high tech back then.

  • haha, i think it is still pretty expensive.

  • @lay3Rv2 Really cheap compared to what it used to be. I bought a World Engines 3 channel radio control set back in about 1971. It only came with on servo. Cost me $138.00. That is equivalent to over $700.00 today. That and I had to buy two more servos to get it working. Bought the servos for $40.00 each. They came as a kit. Had to assemble the circuit board and solder it together. Total cost, in todays dollars, was over $1100.00. Then I needed a plane and engine.

  • You can get the same radio system, (although much better quality) for less that $30.00 today. That would be like me paying $6.00 back then.

  • As an example of how knowledge not used is knowledge lost, I kept saying, "Back in the 80s, when I was into Old Timers, I could name most of the models in that video. Or what model the builder ripped off the design from. :D

  • thanks for the great video,, i love it ..

    Michael

  • yes, would you believe it, one is even radio controlled.

    lol

I don't think i would be able to do control line. Just seems way too boring for me.

  • WOW, that's awesome, for it's time.....LOVE my F15 and 18

  • im so glad i didnt have to fly my plane with a string... oh wait im a heli guy.

  • ya, too much work.

your kind was just a spectator on the sidelines for half of a century while us plane guys pioneered electronics and nitro engines.

then when things finally became slightly easier, someone decided to try a heli rc.

  • My kind? A child is what I was. My parents couldnt afford this hobby for a child to go out and wreck. Now I am grown and I have a job and my own place. I wasnt on the sidelines by choice.

  • like the last bit with the hydro planes most...

  • Bomber guy do you have anything from the 1944

or 45 Sir John Shelley cup at Sutton Colefield

    England

  • A great look back, love the early proportional transmitters, way expensive back then

  • Wow great video thanks for posting. Funny to see AMA numbers in the 4 digits.

  • This is really great ! Too bad we don't wear ties out on the field no more..

    Thanks for posting !

  • Radlett model air shows - I was there! short trousers etc - built and flew models for nearly 50 years afterwards - great posting subject - many thanks

  • This compilation of films is very nostalgic. We used to be treated to films like this in the school aeromodeling club back in the 60's. Thanks for posting.

  • Todays Gas pilots have the highest drop out rate of all. These models shown are no longer flown and talked about as boring.

So if this is boring why do you gas guys drop out so much?

  • Very awesome. As was said earlier, Thank You for posting this.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Ahhh, those were the days when men were men, models were models, summers were summers and the " lets ban it " health and safety heirachy were unheard of.

  • Amen tatungo1!!!

  • @tatungo1 hahaha damn right man!! I`m not that old ( 43) but still prefer old hand made FF model stuff

  • is so amazing and interesting to know the beganing of rc airplanes, and even more impressive to know the large advanced on rc technology

  • Is that Chester Lanzo flying the RC?

  • Amazing how they where invented back then and there still making them better and better

  • Who needs Radio Control !

Aeromodelling at it's best ~ the good old days

  • at the beginning they had no control of it and now we are making the hover

  • Amazing how far forward we have come in our hobby in the last 50 years or so !

  • The English language has been bastardized for expediency' sake. Why bother to speak concise English, when a few smiley faces and other symbols hastily typed, convey what you mean. Before long, kids won't know how to write. More's the pity. Society is dumbing down, that is certain.

That rant aside, this is a fabulous video.

  • Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

Ignorance at it's best. If we all thought like you, we would still be flying the planes in this awesome video.

  • Your biblical babble aside, I am in total agreement. Ignorance is as pervasive in the world now as it was before the advent of free public education. The reason? Technology has reduced the need for constructive thought. The best of both worlds would be a literate and technologically-savvy society. I choose to be one of those. As we become less erudite, society becomes less civil. In other words, we do not progress, but regress. I would love to be flying those planes, by the way. Cheers

  • You missed the point as I knew you would. The "biblical babble" was quoted to show you that your comments on today's society could have been said equally so for the society that existed during the filming of this video. The language used in this video is just as much chopped up as the language is today. Hence ignorance.

Oh, and BTW, nothing ever changes, it is always the same. The issues we face today, are exactly the same in principal as the ones you faced.

Cherish the old, but accept the new.

  • berry nice model!

  • why dont people talk like this anymore? i wish people still did

  • why? at least now you are unique

  • Wouldn't it be fun to go back in time with a 33% Carden Yak and see the reactions?

    -Eric

  • Had the models from 30's RC control too, or just the models from 60's?

  • man, that's so cool !!!

  • What happened to all the girls in the hobbie? lol this is cool!

  • was these drive -by -wire flown?

  • I think the earlier ones were free flyers with very little fuel used.

  • Yes limited amounts of fuel (10ccs I think) and fuse or mechanical timers to release the stabilizer to bring them down.

  • I can't believe how well they flew with escapements! And they did with pushing buttons and switches on the TX!!!! LOL! Just amazing thank you!

  • So they were free flight?

  • ahahahaha bloody awsum...

WOULD U BELIEVE IT...1 is RADIO CONTROLLED~!!!! lololol

  • LOVE IT.

  • GR8!!!

  • What's with the upturned wings on the early models? Was that for stability?

  • Dihedral = stability The Flying Quaker and the Playboy....still available as flying models

  • Very interesting

  • wow.. wonder how fun it was flyin a plane without a transmitter... start it and throw and it does what it wants.. lol

  • When you don't know any other way, I imagine it was a blast.

  • 0:26 lol

  • BEST OF THE BEST ON YOUTUBE

  • This is a hobby love

  • I LOVE this HOBBY!

Here we are, in 2009, still Flying these sweet little machines. Because it won't stop, it don't stop. Thank goodness.

Happy New Year to ALL RC Flyer's! Peace.

  • These older models are kept flying by a small group "Society of Antique Modelers" (S.A.M)

I have included a small clip in the video response section. They are now 'assisted' by radio due to restricted flying areas.

  • Fabulous. Ahhh.....the good old days. 5 stars.

  • Terrible joke about Imp-otence terrible.

Also why cant they employ announcers who have proper diction like they used to? You try to and talk like that for more than a couple of minutes and I bet your jaws will ache, for example what is elarstic (3.27)????? Everything about todays TV and information news has gone to pot! This sort of reportage is from when broadcasters used to care about what we wanted to see and not about the money/cutbacks etc etc ....rant rant rant I know!

  • wow :O

  • Thats amazing how many thigns can change in 30 years. From free fligh to rc control flight.

    5/5

  • Hey Bomberguy,

You have some of the nicest stuff I've seen. Your library of clips must be quite something!

  • wow them free flight models musta had alot of running into the crowds XD

  • yeah weve come along way , that was an amazing vid .thanks.

  • Awesome.

  • After over 30 years in RC I still get the bumps watching the oldies! THANKS!

  • Thanks for sharing, Bomberguy!

  • Hmm, I wonder what those people back then would think of Spektrum technology in model aircraft. Anyway, great video, great planes. :D

  • im sure they would've never imagined a radio that was immune to interference. besides, back then, there was almost no such thing as radio control planes at all! most of them were control line.

  • I remember when I was a kid visiting the hobby store to buy my monthly stick and tissue model and I could only dream of owning the RC models that were displayed there. The prices of radio sets and other essentials were well out of the reach of most working folks. It was the sport of kings, so to speak. The hobby has come a long way since then.

  • great models and great video!

  • i must say being in aeromodelling now for 15years, its really nice to see where it all started..great video guys.. from the south african modelling association.

  • worms eye view lol

  • it s great!!! aeromodel club du soudour[france]

  • WOW! You don't see R/C Hydro plane models very often. Thanks for posting this. - Vancouver Gas Model Club Member 1969 - 1975

  • Man, great find!

  • Where can I buy a transmitter like on 08:05?

  • In Japan, of course. This is very popular cho-ki-ping-kaboom 2.

  • Extreme Dihedral!!!

  • A great collection of rc-model history, well done!!!

  • cool

  • Great video, Thanks for posting it.

  • Fantastic piece of flying history! :) thanks for the upload

  • How Rare! Something you don't see often or not at all on TV. ,since they only choose to screen the modern RC but none of it's history. Good stuff !!!

  • 03:08, that must of hurt

  • what are those 1 or 2 channel radios. i got a book from way back building those things, ug, their most sophisticated model at the end of the book is radio controled with a one channel radio

  • Thats right! I used to use a 7 channel reed/relay transmitter with rubber band/clockwork escapements in the model, all functions controlled by on/off switches, (no digital proportional then). Its like using 7 single channel radios at the same time. I think the Japanese guy shown here was using a multi reed unit.Showing my age now!

  • Where do I get the video to DL...

I want to save this type stuff to DVD

  • you have to buy the software to DL streaming media

  • Try Keepvid (dot com) works well.

  • Ang huhusay ninyo mga kupal .

  • look at the size of the controllers!!

  • showed this to my grandpa. he said it reminded him of the aeroplanes he used to build as a boy.

  • where did you find this footage Ilove buliding and flying the models of yesteryear

  • Nice transition from the jacket-and necktie crowd with odd-looking free-flight airplanes all the way to golf shirts and off-the-shelf radio control! Another good one, Bomberguy.

  • Superb. One of the very most enjoyable videos I have seen on YouTube so far. !!!

  • I sell the plans to many of these jewels. SWEET!

  • Awesome Video, I am a model flier and I pretty much respect my "ancestors"!!! xD

  • Beautiful video. The obsession is still strong today.

  • My brother had a string flown japanees zero that he let me play with when I was a kid. I remember it was really loud when it ran.

  • Outstanding! Thanks for providing this.

  • Very good video. thank you.

  • Is that rare footage? Man I should subscribe.

  • was they on the 3ghz then???

    check out my r/c vids

  • I fly rc planes now. But it looks like more people was in to it then. nice video

  • lovely... the beginning of our pasion...

i think in that time was more serious than now... i mean, you can buy pre-builded "toys" that the people think they are "model planes".... in my opinion, nothing is compare to build your own plane, starting from wood pieces...

  • the starter was very "portable"

  • Yup. Could fit one of those in my pocket.

  • hehe no BL

  • super tare .......

  • Enjoyed this very much! Used to build and fly control line in my younger days. Thanks for sharing this.

  • That is so awsome. Airplanes facinate me- I wanna get a piolet's liscence.

  • ha ha the man? voice is funny

  • Priceless!

  • LOL I thought MY R/C radio was big in 1976. That was huge. LOL

Great vid. Thanks for posting it.

  • great video!!

  • Splendid Show what what.Very powshh accent chaps lol

  • Great stuff, thanks so much for posting this.

    -Graiskye.

  • thanks for sharing these great clips let's keep memories of good old times alive!

  • I'm not so old, but I LOVE IT !!! They were the real guys and women. Much better than the stupid video's we're getting today... nerds on a bike, stars in Ferrari's, all a great mess, disaster, death and above all... disrespect for the common people.

  • Not forgetting rats on a surf board, I mean fer KRISSAKES GGRRRRRRRR!!!!

  • Sooo interesting. Thank you!

  • History I LOVE IT!

  • What a wondeful video. Thanks again Bomberguy. Pity that the commentator didn't realize that the 'Dambuster Lancaster' was in fact a Lincoln. And the pronounciation of 'Ee..laaah..stic' is a real scream. What a treat.

  • Looks like a late spec Lanc rather than a Lincoln , one of the ones used for aerial mapping etc for private companies

  • Dave

Take a good look at the nose at 4.53 and you'll clearly see what it is ! There was a photo of this model in Aeromodeller with description at the time.

  • Fantastic stuff! Anyone got any indoor scale footage?!

  • i hope that u liked it coz that beuty is mine dam straight i got the comentaters from another vid

  • yeah, right...

  • GONAD

  • wtf dose gonad mean anyway

  • It means nuts, balls etc......utube removed the post I was commenting on.

  • Thank you Bomberguy!

  • Many thanks, must finish my Mercury Matador and get back in the air.

  • watch the prop at about 50 - 51 seconds into this...it appears that the plane must be gliding...?
