When I first heard this I was puzzled. I liked the song. I liked the singing ---but here was something "out" about it. Now, 46+ years later (Holy Smoke!) I can see the problem: Even in my wildest teenage hormone driven fantasies I could never believe that this confident, self-assured young woman, with so much authority in her voice, would waste her summer pining for the likes of ME! (sniff)
No, please no more rain, please! ∽∽ Seriously now: I love her dark timbre, could listen to Helen all day long. She was a refreshing counterpart to all those average rock 'n' roll howlers of the time.
She was so talented, she should have been a superstar. She was held back by her management who gave her crap songs. If she'd have sung Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Burt Bacharach numbers she would have been huge.
@phyzzique Look at "For all the fun I'll have while you're so far away." She forgot her lyrics and almost said something else. Yes, she was lip-syncing in this one.
@anthonytorelli Well I watched it about 5 times to see what you said. There was a glitch in the youtube tape at the point where you mentioned, so I watched it reduced (regular size). The glitch doesn't appear there......seamless. I realize there is no microphone present (maybe a boom mic). But here's the rub, her tongue and throat are very animated, you never see that in lip-syncing. I repeat, if she is lip-syncing, it's the best i've ever seen.
As a ten-year-old watching Helen I knew I was heterosexual to my core and she was only a few years older than me, and I will love her forever, her deep sensuality, strength of voice and moves of cat-like sexiness
Yes. How could Carole King not like this version? It has all the big lushness-- strings, choir, etc., but it also ROCKS -- listen to that drumming! Excellent.
Helen Shapiro has a pretty and powerful voice which doesn't always happen togethor and she has so much talent it should be illegal. She has an excellent stage presence, you can't take your eyes off her. When I watch this video, it makes me wonder if she got better material there is no telling how far she could have gone. I think she still would have given the Beatles a run for their money for top billing (ok I know that's a bit of an exaggeration but ???).

Great talent. Too bad in those days she had to lip-sync this song. She is great enough to do it live. TV wasn't, that's the problem.

@anthonytorelli If that is lip-syncing, then it's the best I ever saw!

@anthonytorelli
Lip-sync was really done for economic reasons. No band, less money, less room.

Part of the charm of Carole King's version is the somewhat untrained voice...

In some camera shots she looks very much like Amy Winehouse, especially in profile. Great song - I remember it well!

sounds just like that song sunday will never be the same? who sang that?
steve89z 1 year ago
@steve89z That was Spanky and Our Gang, 1967-8. The song was originally Carole King's first solo chart entry(don't know how high) in 1963.
