It took two hours and 270 planes to sink that monstrosity.. Russian vessels wouldn;t last a minute against it. Hell..it was almost twice the size of the Iowa!
I'm curious - who gets that early hit on the Yamato? When it happens, neither ship has made contact with the other, and all their main turrets are in neutral position, but someone scores a hit. And after that you can hear more shells coming in, still before initial contact is made.
The Sovietsky Soyuz Class was Better Armed & Armoured & Twice as many were Planned,

@kornek21 Thanks. I love the graphics of the Battlestations games, and they look like a lot of fun, but for me they seem to be a bit lacking in realism (which I understand - they did it this way to increase play value).
This game definitely lacks the graphics but it somehow has a more realistic 'simulator' feel to it, rather than being more of a shooter like the Battlestations games.
Let me give you some fatherly giudence stridertenryu, Yamato Could indeed outrange the Iowa Class battleships & yes they could launch spotter planes, as long as they don't get shot down. Iowa's radar still gave a Huge fire-control advantage to the U.S. & Royal navy in WW2, The Yamato would have been unstopable if she had fire control Radar, but as you can see stridertenryu Yamato does pretty good in this engagment.
Well thats BS since 10 cm radar were more reliable. Problems with 3cm is that it wasnt good in bad weather. And is only useful at long range. Radar took time to lock onto which nowadays is said to be 7 to 11 minutes because you also need to find which way the target is going. You do not know how big the target is because you can only see the tower with radar, could be a Kongo for all Iowa knows and it requires targets moving slow speeds and in areas with no large landscape.
@f3hdemon zone of immunity for Iowa out ranged Yamatos,,,,, USN superheavy 16" has better penetration and more reliable exploders coupled with radar ranging and the huge speed advantage to keep inside her zone of immunity at will....she was lighter by din of modern stronger and lighter steel, USN only nation that also used Special Treatment Steel(STS) for its non armoured parts and that made them even stronger... earlier USN modern BB's also had same advantages.
Hey I've got a fight for you. Yamato vs. bismark. Oh and in case my first comment got messed up, would you please send me some stats on that russian ship in this vid? I never hear much about russian ships in WW2.
Same here. Bismark actually has the biggest guns of any battleship. It was 20" if I remember correctly. The Bismark was also newer and was more cutting edge for the time.
No I'm not sure, I just remember someone saying so. Think it was a TV show. At any rate you are correct. Crew and commander are very important. I personally think the bismark would give the yamato all she wants and a little more. Just my opinion though.
Incorrect. Bismarck was armed with eight 15" guns.
The Germans were designing a larger "H" class battleship (never received a name, never built) that would have been larger.
The Bismarck was in fact far smaller (50,000 tons) than the Yamato class ships (72,000 tons). The Yamato class holds the record both for largest battleship, and for largest naval rifles mounted (18.1" shell diameter).
In fact, it's rather doubtful if Bismarck could even match the Iowa, let alone Yamato.
Actually the Proposed Sovietsky Soyuz Class was about the same as the american Iowa class, 3 16inch guns in triple turrets, she was only slightly smaller then the Yamato Class of ships, the Sovietsky's would have held their own against the Yamatos.
That Russian ship is kind of an odd design for a battleship. Looks more like a cruiser. Could you give me some stats on the russian boat? Number and size of guns, top speed, armor thickness, etc..?
An Iowa vs. Yamato would be a slugger vs.boxer. The Yamato would have a slightly longer maximum range with heavier shells and broadside. I believe the Iowas speed and blindfire over the horizon radar would make this battle go to luckiest ship.
This a great analogy. Yamato's sheer firepower and enormous amount of armor protection would be hard to beat. Iowa being more advanced technologically, especially in fire control, and her speed would have made it an equal, or near equal match. So yes, you're right, a slugger vs. a boxer is a good way to put it.
There wasnt anything "technologically advanced" about the Iowa besides her fire control. And speed doesnt help in a BB vs BB battle besides in the ability to run away.
It does, actually. It gives you the ability to maneuver. And more importantly, speed gives you the ability to control the range and even when the fight takes place (a huge advantage, given Iowa's radar fire control, superior at night).
Fire control, of course, is very important, so I would say that yes, Iowa's superior FC is a big technological advantage over Yamato.
The Yamato had superior maeuverability their tactical diameter was 640 while the Iowa's were 960. As well the Yamato's were designed to be able to withstand hits from their own 18.1 inch guns, while the Iowa's could only withstand a hit from 16"/45 caliber shell. Although the Yamato did have an inferior radar control it would take only a few hits until the Iowas abilities become degraded unlike the Yamato which would most likelly take many more hits.
But all those turns could be made much faster by Iowa. Iowa could also decide when the battle took place due to superior speed, staying out of range until night, during which the American ship possessed an enormous advantage due to radar directed fire control vs. optical fire control. While the Yamato could take more hits, the difference in fire control, as well as the higher rate of fire for the 16" gun would ensure that it would be hit more. It might not sink, but still be neutralized.
It should be reminded that the Yamato DID indeed have a radar so it was not completely depended on optics, though it was not on par with American electronics the Yamato was not blind in the night. Also both ships had a equal/near equal firing rates which were 2 shells a minute per barrel for both ships. The Iowa would be better off either running away completely or wait for one of her sister ships to arrive to help.
Nope, not even Iowas would be a match, in terms of broadside weight, Yamato dealt a heavier broadside. Only the Montana class outgunned the Yamatos with 12 16" guns
If you send your battleships out, you risk losing them but by leaving them in port, you force your enemy to deploy larger resources in guarding against them coming out i.e. the fleet in being concept
but if your ships are destroyed then you give your enemy control of the seas. Unwise very unwise why do you think the German high seas fleet never challenged the Royal navy again after the battle of Jutland
Thats true up to a point but you do get a diminishing return from such a policy the less your fleet sorties the less efficient it tends to be when eventually it does have to come out and play .
Yes but its difficult to train effectively sat in port or doing coastal milk runs, the best training for fighting is fighting i think the Kriegsmarine surface fleet suffered in that way as the war progressed it became less and less effective .
It most certainly did get to fire its guns in battle. At the battle of Leyte Gulf, and again during operation Ten-Go. However, it was used wastefully, and during the Sho-Go campaign in Leyte Gulf, it was captained by Admiral Kurita...who apparently forgot his brains, backbone and wits back home in Japan. I suggest watching going to the channel belonging to GDHouston here on YouTube and watching any videos about 'Tin Cans' and the Battle of Leyte Gulf...
Japan was primarily a naval power and their training was second to none whilst Russia was primarily a land power so maybe the japanese ship would have been victorious. Then again maybe not
Jap only got same victories by luck, they are not a traditional sea power as the United States, Britain, or the Neitherland. Jap is just like a idiot who got very rich in one night, and put all the money it got in a hopeless gamble. Jap is a purely lunatic nation.
The first Sino-Japanese war? The Russo-Japanese war? If I recall correctly, the Japanese navy in World War 2 was superior to every other navy in the world with the exception of the United States and that was primarily down to U.S industrial might and the use of radar. Also, if I remember correctly, the United States was a new world power just like Japan which means the U.S isn't a traditional sea power either. That honour goes to Spain, Portugal, France, Britain and the Netherlands
But you never forget, both China and Russia in that time were 'sunset',both countries ruler made great mistakes in that time, the Qing dysnasty's ruler never gave its fleet a real support(The Qing fleet did not took enough ammunition in the naval fight), the Romanov Dynasty's ruler was busy with its inside conflicts(the Romanov fleet's supply of gunpoder were replaced by sand!), and both nation's many ship not under mordern-reequipping.Both nation's fleet were only 'skeleton'.
The reason why I called Jap are not traditional sea power is that the United States Navy were build in 1800 Quicy war with French, even thouth its not great, the U.S navy had fought for years when it became a great one in TR was in office. The U.S navy took actions in Latin America and many other fight with the Royal navy, so its a traditional sea power. The Jap was 'KO' by rear-admiral Perry, its mimic other real sea power to build fleet, so is an idiot became rich in one night!
Talking about naval tradition, I'd ratherr put Chile and Peru before the Jap, the Jap was only can mimic, but the two South American nations as well as the United States has the idea to build powerful fleet as soon as they independent.
In Sino-Jap and Russo-Jap war, But even under such a circumstance of China and Russia were weak in that time, the Jap was still took sneak attack to won the them. The United States also a victim under such a dirty method.
Maybe a bit harsh. After all, Japan conquored vast territories. Without the United States, would Japan have been defeated. Personally, I think not. Also, Japan has been a serious naval power for nearly 200 years. They had to be otherwise, they would have become a colony like Indioesia
The Jap should give thanks to vice-admiral Perry, the American fleet led by him stimulated the Jap to rose up to be a sea power. If Gen.Perry's fleet did not visit Japan in 1854,the Jap maybe are still in stone-age so far. lol
What the U.S navy did in 1812 war and American-Spanish war were much better than the Jap did. Small U.S.fleet in its early days beat powerful RN and also the U.S. fleet defeated Spanish fleet in Cuba and the Philippines. The Jap has alway been a lunatic nation, it must be controlled by other great power, orelse it would again a huge disaster for the whole humanbeing.
1850s, 1 warship in the jap navy, only in the 1900s did japan even come close to being equal to the dutch navy, which was always 1/4th to 1/8th the size of the american an british navies, in every war the japanese have ever had they sneak attacked the enemy, in world war 2, japan had a total of 13 BBs at the start including the 2 yamatos, between the USa and GB we had 25 in the Us navy by 43, and 16 in the royal navy by 43, japan never ha da chance, 41 BBs between the 2 navies vs 13, no chance
carriers, atr the end the us had 101 aircraft carriers, the UK had 17 at the end including a few that were sank, the japanese only had a total of 24 built by th end of the war, there is no way the japanese woulda won
The Axis powers gambled on a short sharp war that would scare their opponents into a quick submission, when that didnt work the writing was on the wall they simply didn't have the Industrial base to compete with the USA and the Soviets .
Your probably right as soon as the Nazi's didnt finish the Soviets at the first rush it was only a matter of time for them, that said US men and material hastened the end considerably and saved a lot of lives as well as affecting the post war map of Europe, its a crude analogy for the contributions of the Allies but is I think broadly true that 'the British gave time, the Soviets gave blood the US supplied money' .
It wasn't the aircraft carrier's that were important but the aircraft and aircrews. In any case, the submarine offensive was what doomed the Japanese.
