This is astonishing ! I love the attitude, both serious and cool, of these musicians playing this crazy wonderful dancing music ! It is a true performance !
I've watched this video at least 100 times. I still, for the life of me, can't tell what the guitarist is playing. He's not fooling anyone. He might as well be holding a tuba.
@poolwaiter From what I'm told he helped write a few songs so they let him play at their concerts. Whatever he's playing was cut out from whatever media this was taken from.
@HeskethBang I always wondered about that myself! I was going to ask in this new post but realized they had Roland in their 1980 Firecracker live performance. I'd put a link here but YouTube doesn't allow it. Click through the matrixsynth link in this post or just type it in your address bar. It will bring you to MATRIXSYNTH. Type YMO Firecracker in the top search box on the right and it will be the first result.
@HeskethBang Technopolis was written in 1979 before many of the classic Japanese synths. They later used the Roland TR-808 on their 1981 album BGM.
The band was directly inspired by Kraftwerk so the European influence is certainly there. Also the members of YMO are classically trained just like the members of Kraftwerk.
Having seen their shows a handful of times back in the day, I can honestly say that their live performances are often quite a departure from their original sound on the record. But this one is almost a reproduction with complete fidelity to the original recording on The Solid State Survivor album.
Kraftwerk should hide in the cellar after hearing this !
Now THIS is influential electronic avantgarde pop music.
Kraftwerk are absurdly overrated in their influence on following music generations,i have nothing against Kraftwerk personally, but their musical concept is too limited+repetitive, apart from their few big hits they don´t inspire.
I got to know Sakamoto (mmh)+another guy of YMO at a Cabaret Voltaire concert in Germany in the early 80s,they seemed to be into lots of sound back then...
This is (in my humble opinion) the best version of YMO - Technopolis. This version has a very catchy bass line (i think it's an arp odyssey) and it's played flawless. Cool manorism and outfits, too. Brilliant!

勘違いかもしれないけど、この時のTECHNOPOLISはギターの音が聞こえないのとシーケンスフレーズが少ないのは気のせい?

Mad thing is, although they're from Japan, home of some of the coolest synths, they're all playing american Moogs, Prophets and ARP's!
