  • This is astonishing ! I love the attitude, both serious and cool, of these musicians playing this crazy wonderful dancing music ! It is a true performance !

  • :)

    superb ! nice post

  • I love this but I have no clue what he is saying?

  • @RevesbyReg T-E-C-H-N-O-P-O-L-I-S

  • @RevesbyReg tokyo. tokyo and then the letters are T-E-C-H-N-O-P-O-L-I-S and then after that he says tokyo.

  • Fantastic piece!

  • 「T.e.c.h.n.o.p.o.l.i.s」の後、何て言ってるか解らなかったが、

    Thank you♪

  • What? How did I not know about YMO for 23 years? The coolest thing on the planet and NO ONE BOTHERED TO TELL ME THEY EXIST?

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto one of the geatest composers of our times...

  • I've watched this video at least 100 times. I still, for the life of me, can't tell what the guitarist is playing. He's not fooling anyone. He might as well be holding a tuba.

  • @poolwaiter From what I'm told he helped write a few songs so they let him play at their concerts. Whatever he's playing was cut out from whatever media this was taken from.

  • this very video was my first exposure to YMO, bout a few years ago.

pretty sure this was the only song i listened to that whole month

  • (^_−)−☆

  • Aside from Underworld, The Prodigy, Bloody Beetroots and Chemical Brothers, no one is really doing innovative live synth music like this

  • Mad thing is, although they're from Japan, home of some of the coolest synths, they're all playing american Moogs, Prophets and ARP's!

  • @HeskethBang I always wondered about that myself! I was going to ask in this new post but realized they had Roland in their 1980 Firecracker live performance. I'd put a link here but YouTube doesn't allow it. Click through the matrixsynth link in this post or just type it in your address bar. It will bring you to MATRIXSYNTH. Type YMO Firecracker in the top search box on the right and it will be the first result.

  • @HeskethBang Technopolis was written in 1979 before many of the classic Japanese synths. They later used the Roland TR-808 on their 1981 album BGM.

The band was directly inspired by Kraftwerk so the European influence is certainly there. Also the members of YMO are classically trained just like the members of Kraftwerk.

  • @ExtraClassyWesChang

    ohh shi-

  • I'm sorry its Haruomi Hosono. with the cig in his mouth. My bad...

  • @matrixsynth I'm sorry its Haruomi Hosono.

  • I LOVE the fact that my hometown has inspired so many great songs/tunes over the years in the history of modern music!

    Tokyo ROXSSS!!!!

  • Having seen their shows a handful of times back in the day, I can honestly say that their live performances are often quite a departure from their original sound on the record. But this one is almost a reproduction with complete fidelity to the original recording on The Solid State Survivor album.

    Lovin' it!

  • Ichiko Hashimoto good job!

  • Anybody know what synth Hosono san has under the OB he's playing? It's also in the RYDEEN video

  • cigarette or chupa-chups?

    love this one!

  • Love!!!!!

  • Kraftwerk should hide in the cellar after hearing this !

Now THIS is influential electronic avantgarde pop music.

Kraftwerk are absurdly overrated in their influence on following music generations,i have nothing against Kraftwerk personally, but their musical concept is too limited+repetitive, apart from their few big hits they don´t inspire.

I got to know Sakamoto (mmh)+another guy of YMO at a Cabaret Voltaire concert in Germany in the early 80s,they seemed to be into lots of sound back then...

  • Love it! Love it! Love it!

  • from VISUAL YMO dvd have this recording

  • This is my favorite version of Technopolis

  • Just face the fact´s!

They where 20 years before the rest of the electronic music pack.....

    Will always remember the 80`s....YMO.....

  • BEST !!! Great !! Love It ! Pioneers of Music

  • 100%

  • This reminds me very much of the music that would eventually appear on the SNES and Genesis systems in the early 90s. Very ahead of its time!

  • go go techno robo!

  • I love the dude with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth--that's totally badass!

  • @mournblade1066 I'm sorry its Haruomi Hosono.

  • This is (in my humble opinion) the best version of YMO - Technopolis. This version has a very catchy bass line (i think it's an arp odyssey) and it's played flawless. Cool manorism and outfits, too. Brilliant!

  • AMEN!!...cool, great...awesome version...the FANTASTIC bassline...bestially maddening!!...wow!

  • the best version. i agree. this amount of people working together with this visible/audio appearance...is the top notch.

  • -MASTERPIECE-

  • top freaky, cool

  • I heard they needed lots of trailer trucks in

a concert tour to carry these computers to make electronic music. Now even one PC can do it,that's amazing.

  • You're right, same with Kraftwerk. All they need now is four laptops on stage. I personally prefered when they had lots of gear, looked better.

  • yep!

  • Expandis loves YMO....

    blip...

  • Anyone know any online music distributors that have YMO music available for download? iTunes doesn't have any of their music.

  • I think Rhapsody might have some?

  • Quality sound! Very very nice track!

    Thanks for the video!

  • man!

    this version is really cool!

  • The guy with the cigarette is the coolest. My new hero!

  • Oh I second that. Imma wear a red suit with a black hat and an unlit cigarette.

  • @EJLirik He is called Haruomi Hosono - I think that seals the deal

  • Fantastic!!! Thanks for uploading this.

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the greatest synthesizer users ever!!!

  • Hi, maxlover55

This clip has got included in the video cassette "TV YMO", issued at 1993. I think retail DVD version is not available.

and also, I dont know you could get it in your country.

    Hope this helps.

  • The TV live show's name is "Yoru-no-hit-studio"
