That IS a cute bat, though. If you are interested in working w/wildlife, I'd get some preexposure shots that way you'll be protected in case you come across a carrier animal that may have rabies or other zoonoses. I HAVE to b/c I'm in the Vet Tech program and finishing up my degree. It's a set of 3 shots and very expensive, though.
@FinalSlit It's your initial decision on what you want to do if you decide to take the risk and expose yourself but if it's a protect species or not injured or abandoned, you must leave it be or contact a wildlife rehabber that is licensed or the Game and Fish Commission. I've cared for a few birds and one baby squirrel one time, but we never kept, we released them. And if it was questionable or dangerous, we left it alone. I would call a rehabber to come n get THAT type of animal.
@FinalSlit I think you're right about that. A Mexican ...tailed bat is protected. It's not just the rabies deal that you worry about but they carry other dangerous diseases. B/C they are the primary animal that does carry rabies, they should be handed over to a wildlife rehabber/conservationist b/c they have the 'pre' rabies shot series to allow them to work w/these types of animals, though saving baby birds is okay but all animals carry zoonoses, so you have to weight the risks.
You dont have to get bit to get rabies. All that has to happen is for one of it's claws to scrape you. It doesn't have to even draw blood, just scrape the skin. Sounds crazy but its true.Bats use their mouths to clean their bodies. Rabies is carried via saliva only-not blood or urine. Rabies enters the body and from point of entry immediately begins traveling toward the brain, on a path that could take up to a year or more depending on the point of impact. Further from the brain, longer it takes
It is a pocketed or mexican freetail bat. I would have to see the skin between the tail and back leg to be sure which, as they are very similar. It is a common insectavore (insect eater) and at that size, it is fully grown. They are about 1/4 that size and a pinkish white color when they are babies. I rehabillitate bats in my spare time:) Great video and thanks for taking care of him then letting him go.
Bats DO carry rabies, so you should be careful-- if you find a bat on the ground, it'd be best to stay away from it, because it really COULD be sick. However, it's not as if bats are BORN rabid. They, just like most other mammal, can carry the disease, but not all of them do. Also, bats aren't really suited to be pets. They need to fly outside and hunt. They're not really the type of animal you can put in a cage with a few crickets and forget about. I would NEVER condone keeping one--
I've just got 1 flying trough my window...Gotcha...did some experiments with him(he didn't respond to the vids on youtube whit the sounds of bat's hehe)...he's free again!
I don't think that's a baby. All the bat's we have that size at where I live are adults. It could be a different species. We have little brown bats, I think. He looks huge, though. How'd you catch him? I'd be freaked out that he'd bite me. He's so cute, but he looks really scared. Do you still have him?
Oh really? Hm well I found him on a bush in my backyard. And no, I don't have him, this video is a year old and we turned him loose right after we made the video. Havn't seen him since.
geez, yuo two sounded like....14ish in this vid XD hehehe, nevertheless you are lucky to have had a cute little brown bat be so curious with you girls :D
usually they are the ones who dont warm up to humans very quickly^_^
He's adorable, but he may be grown. If he's not flying, he may be sick. While bats don't usually have rabies, if it is infected, everyone who has handled your pet bat may be at risk. Bat bites are so slight, most people never realize that they have been bitten. As soon as you can, you should get the little guy checked out to see if he (and you) are rabies free. Don't worry - rabies shots aren't those dire belly button shots anymore. Good luck!
Okay people, WE LET IT GO that night. We just kept it for an hour at most. I havn't seen the bat in a month. So people, dont' post any more comments like this.
actually, unless the bat species is endangered, and depending on where they live, it's not always against the law. It's not recommended to keep one as a pet, but it's not breaking the law either depending on where you live. some states DO allow it.
There was a bat hanging from my screen door the other day. I should have recorded him and put it on here! I just scooped him up and took him out to the woods. Never saw a bat up close like that before. Awesome creature! Looked like it was the same species as the one in this video.
omg! it so cute! and small...i cant believe u guys found this.. usually ppl say "hey guess what!? i found a cat in my yard!" "yea well we found a baby bat in our yard! oh what!" haha awesome

Bats are superrr adorable! <3
But don't pick one up off the ground!
They're also superrr superrr suspectible to pathogens, especially rabies.
Don't touch the bat (you wouldn't touch a wild squirrel, right? Cute but if they bite, you could get sick) lol..
