QUESTION! Hi I recently found out I have a "VERY SMALL" ingrown toenail, you can barley pull back on the skin and see the full nail, it hurts not a lot though, do I spread it open just a little bit of white gooey stuff came out, no blood, I stuffed a small piece of toilet paper in it, and wrapped toilet paper around it and taped it with tape, after clipping away at some nail. It's not horrible it looks normal, just with some swelling, so do you think I'll be okay?
@KawaiiTigerXBOX the white gooey stuff is pus because they get infected. don't clip the nail away because it can grow back into the skin. toenails need to be clipped straight across, not curved, to prevent ingrown nails. don't tape it because it can grow into the skin from being bound up too. if it's not that bad, just soak it in epsom salt and warm water a few times a day. it's cheap and you can get it from any drug store. if it doesn't improve, see a doctor to have it removed.
ya i had a 2 i relly had 5 i no you sayin lieybut im not so ya i got 1 now but 1 n 1 tiem i go 2 di i go 2 di um................ di nallsall. n that guy was good bcaz it was bood n red my toe was yellow so ya :D
hi, i have had ingrown toenails 3 times. i just got one taken out again the other day and right now it's healing. however, i'm afraid that it might grow back again in the same place causing an ingrown again. is there an ointment or medication i can buy to treat my toenail so that it will not grown back into an ingrown again. i would much appreciate it if you know one. thanks!
@filipride100 I don't know of any medications. but ingrowns usually happen if you cut them very short and follow the curve. If you cut them straight across and just trim the corners, it will prevent them. My daughter had several ingrown toenails from doing this, and the doctor cut a sliver off the edge of the nail and put an acid under her skin to prevent it from ever growing back. That was a few years ago and you can't tell anymore that part of the nail was removed and she hasn't had one since.
@filipride100 umm no theres a special mixture the hospital or your doctor can apply to the nail but i was told as for that you nail needs to ingrow 3 or more times befor they even consider that so.
@filipride100 It will grown.it happens to me most of times.i have to cut the ingrowing nail and then pull it off.this thing brought me once to a surgery....that wasn't nice....
@filipride100 I had it multiple times myself. instead of going to get it done again i fixed them myself. There really isnt any ointment or medications to keep it from happening again. Its all up toy you! neionix is right about trimming correctly. Also if you think it might be in the early stages of happening again a trick is to put a tiny piece of cotton between the problem corner of the nail and the nail bed. it should correct itself to grow properly... but prooper trimming is a MUST!
@filipride100 Also another thing to remember depending on how infected the nails were... you might have a nail fungus problem that might still linger even if your nails are growing like normal. I had that problem with mine my nails were ingrown free for a couple years but still were discolored. then you would need some ointment or other treatment for that. Also Soaking your toes/feet in warm epsom salt water will help your ingrown nails recovering and keep them healthy.
@SirWimpie Yes I got them twice from cutting my toenails too short on the sides, some of the worst pain I ever had in my life when I would bump them in the dark barefooted.
I also got one from breaking my toenail, then the sharp corner grew into the side of my toe.
Believe me you do not want to experience this, it's terrible pain.
@neionix ah son of a bitch, ima have to feel it twice then, i have em on both my toes, but if thats the only pain, just the feeling from the needle, then i guess i can go thru it
@miramontesadrian lol my daughter had it done a few times because she has a really flat nail bed. After the 2nd time, the dr sprayed some cryofreeze spray on it to numb the skin before the needle went in. You could see if your dr has that. I'm sure he does. The spray actually hurts too just because it's so freezing cold, but that only lasts a few seconds.
I had that done...it was $250 for one side and another $75 for the other side of my toe.....unfortunately i was only suppose to get the left side of the nail removed but a week b4 my surgery my other side got infected.....the numbing stuff hurt sooo badly i screamed and the doctor accidentally hit a nerve so evry once in a while i feel the pain.
I had it done and like everyone has said, the needle hurts, but it's fast and then you feel nothing. Once it's out, you'll feel better right away! Ask the nurse to pinch your arm and look at her while the doctor does the shot.
You know it's funny. I remember when I was about 12 I had an ingrown toenail. And my doctor never numbed it when he was cutting into me. But a friend of mine recently got one and his was numbed...I was pissed when he told me that...lol
@katamarigurl yeah, they injected a huge syringe of fluid into the toe about 10 minutes earlier that made it swell up to almost twice it's size and it numbed it. I'm assuming it had novocaine or lidocaine in it to numb it, and the other fluid sort of works like a tourniquet from the inside.
@neionix Most of the times they use a concoction of Lidocaine/Xylocaine (same things) and Adrenaline.
Lidocaine to numb the whole lot so the patient doesn't feel any pain, and Adrenaline to make the veins in that area tighten up to prevent excess bleeding.
@Snelly918 Well you gotta let them know because they will only get worse and possibly become infected. it can cost a few hundred dollars without insurance but you should let them know about it because some hospitals offer low cost health care, or they could always make payments. If you have a university hospital in your area, you could try going there. If you can get a student who's doing his/her internship, it will be cheaper than a real doctor, and I've found that they actually do a better job
@Snelly918 You need to tell them, trust me, I have one right now, and I stalled going to the doctor, and I am in school, limping in pain from the ingrown. It just gets worse and worse. I am finally getting surgery wednesday. It gives you headaches bad
@Snelly918 Yea I have them on both, but the other one isnt that bad..but i still have to get surgery on both. Why are you scared to tell your parents?
Two questions -- one, when they remove that side of the nail, is it permanent? I know some places put chemicals on it to prevent regrowth, but is that the entire part of the nail that they remove, or just the part that's ingrown? Two, how painful is it? XD I'm sure the actual removal is just uncomfortable, but I heard that the freezing can be incredibly painful.
@Disconsonance I just got this done yesterday. I am the same way im good with pain just not needles. Soo Honestly, the needles hurt REALLY bad she will do a couple of them on your toe then it will be huge and numb...then she just takes the nail out...all you can feel it a little pull when she does it..and she ONLY takes out the ingrown part. and it just depends on how they do it if its going to be pernemet or not.
@Disconsonance When they kill the root, it's permanent. It will fill back in, and it will look like you never had the procedure done (in a few years), but when they treat it with chemicals, it's permanent. Even if they only remove the sides.
The worst part is getting the injections of pain blockers. The toe is a place where a needle just doesn't belong. It certainly gets your attention. After that, it feels like your toe is asleep. It's not comfortable, but it is pain-free.
@JessieGirl933 he just removed the ingrown nail under the skin. she got them all the time so the dr. permanently removed a sliver off the side of her nail a few months later.
@JessieGirl933 My wife had the whole nail removed on her big toe. Now, when she paints her nails, she just kinda paints a square on that toe, where the nail used to be!
i had to do this and when they gave me the shots so i wouldnt feel the pain i said i could still feel my toe so they did it again and i could still feel my toe but i didnt say anything after that because i did not want to get more shots so i just sucked it up lol!
im having this problem for last 4 years.after every 6 months ineed surgery n tht is tooooooooo painful specialy injectons now im tired of having surgeries n im using homeo pathy medicines but no benfit for last 4 years im wearing slippers even in cold weather
@The214244 That's what happened with my kid. 3 surgeries in about 2 years. The dr ended up removing a sliver of her nail so it can't grow into her skin anymore. You can't even tell that part of it was removed now and she hasn't had any ingrowns since. Might be something to consider...
here in brazil the toe docor (i dont really know how these doctors are called..) the dont give any shots, they just numb the toe with paper and some hot water....it still hurts like shit, seems like they like to see us suffer...idiots
Fujico--not long, a few days, depending on how bad the ingrown nail is. If it's a removal like this one, it's feeling better in 2 days or so. My kid was very prone to them, so this same toe was done about a year later and they used acid to stop the growth on part of the nail. That took over a week to feel better.
@neionix thanks i have gotten mine when i was really young but i dont remember.. and i got it done in the usa and im in japan now and am scared they wont numb it i also play soccer and train everyday and am afraid i am going to miss a day
I'm sure they'd numb it for you because they have to put that poker about an inch into the side of your nail. You might end up missing a day or 2, but you'll miss more than that if you don't get it taken care of because the pain just gets worse.
ive never had a toenail removed proffesionaly. i did lose my toenail on my big toe though,it was on my big toe. i was barefoot and my sister tried 2 squirt me wit the waterhose and 2 escape i tried 2 run in2 the house but i pulled the door over my toe and ripped the whole nail off. it only took 5 mths 2 regrow though.
Oh man!!!! i think i have a ingrown toenail!! No offence to indians but i dont trust them Because when my little cousin (6 years old) Went to the dentist she had more than 5 cavities and they didnt freeze her mouth!!!!! Oh god!!! I hope it doesnt hurt >3> OH GOD!!! I feel like killing myself for picking my nails!! Man when i was younger i bit them all to a small length where they beld!! Now that i started growing them 1 GOES INGROWN shit man shit
I got sick just thinking about it hurting! Altough it didnt hurt, the shot did...but after that i DIDNT FEEL IT! But people kept telling me all kinds of stories about getting an ingrown toenail...that when I saw the doctor cutting through my nail...i instantly got grossed out and wanted to throw up and I almost fainted..no joke. They almost called a code blue.
LOL that's why they're not supposed to let you look at it. They had my kid practically flipped upside down when this was done, and I had it done when I was little and they had a sheet up.
my little girl has a ingrown toenail she is 10 she went to her doc and she didn't remove it she said it was not that bad she just got a wooden stick and slid it under the tonail to get any dirt out that she had in there. My little 10 year old is so scared to have it removed so we are doing the wooden stick thing to see if that works!
I so don't want to get mine out! I got mine from playing dodge ball in school and some kid stepped on my toe and it became in grown. I know it won't hurt but it looks so painful!!
Yeah, it's not bad. when she had it done, she was sort of upside down and couldn't see it. I had mine done when I was a kid too and hey had it blocked off. I think the scary part is seeing it. That's why she wanted me to record it, so she could check it out later.
yeah the doctor had to give me two shots through the whole nail to surpress the pain. then they do the whole get-in-the-nail thing. it kinda hurt. but ur gonna be really happy that u got it out cuz i feel so much better now :) thank god i didnt bleed ...
sorriee it took so long to reply, havent been on, but ahhhhhhhh!! i was screaming bloddy murder, the first shot was in the front of my toee. that didnt really hurt but the shot on the back of my toe madee me scream alot, i was so relived when i was donee; but then i had to get another shot in my arm (booster shot)
ermm. Doctor did the same thing for me to. The shot hurts like hell but after that you don't feel anything. For people who had this surgery did you look at your toe after the needle? It was lumpy! I watched the needles go in, so gross!
just had that done today. didn't hurt at all. ya the needles stung a little but it's nothing like what some people have told me. it just feels like a bee sting. not even that painful tho. less than that. but ya the surgery itself didn't hurt a bit. i didn't even know that they were done. lol but ya. if any1 who reads this comment is worried about it... Don't you'll be in and out of it in like 15 mins. you wont feel a thing after the needles. so don't worry. =)
Oh my gosh, I just had mine out yesterday, the shot hurt like hell! :( Then I couldnt feel anything until 4 am then oh buddy I was in a lot of pain, my ingrown was much much bigger than yours too, it sucks, I am really sad too no pedicures until it heals!
damn...lol..thats a big ass ingrown..lol..people should come to the philippines because they know how to take ingrowns out of your feet and fingernails without you spending every cent you have..
hey people who ask why they didnt get anestetic its because it wasnt far down if they dont ned to they dont put it in it hurts like a son of a bitch but ill tell ya once you get it taken out it feels good right away the only part that hurts it the anastetic it burns a bit then ur toe gets swolen up from the shit but other than that it wasnt bad at all
wtf is rong with you!!!!! thats not how it works!!! u r supposed to clean your toes and later take out the nail at home. it hurts alot but it works. im mexican by the way so mexican moms will rip it out fast. hurting like hell. but then again you should tri it
wooh thats not what they did to me. they first shot y toe with like a bb gun that had medicine in it that felt like a rubber band pop then they gave me a shot in the threee same places wich i couldnt feel the they took the side out.
yea my mom took mine out. she gives me pills to kill infection them pulls it out. but lately i had to go to mexico took it for 100 pesos lol no anesthesia ever.
i no huh? that shit hurts as hell. my mom takes it out no pain killers or nothing. after she takes it out, she tells me to walk it off. thats fudged up XD
i had a only abit of my nail took off on both big toes, they took off about 3mm of nail at the side where its ingrown and now it looks perfectly fine, none of the prossess hurt, they stuck 2 needles in each toe then i felt nothing at all, at the end they put some acid in my toe to stop the nail growing back.
Yeah, the needle really is the worst part but you'll get totally numb. then they fill your toe up with fluid to make it fat and purple but you can't feel that. depending on how bad the nail is, it shouldn't hurt too bad unless they have to put acid in there to stop the growth entirely. oh and johnboypitt...dude get over the foot fetish, she's 11!!!!!!
extremely painful... i would suggest you get it over with as the pain you get from an ingrown toenail when walking can be bad, and over time it gets more and more painful to walk on. just prepare yourself for a painful injection, because its the worst i've ever had.
...longest toes ever!

im having this problem for last 4 years.after every 6 months ineed surgery n tht is tooooooooo painful specialy injectons now im tired of having surgeries n im using homeo pathy medicines but no benfit for last 4 years im wearing slippers even in cold weather
The214244 1 year ago
@The214244 That's what happened with my kid. 3 surgeries in about 2 years. The dr ended up removing a sliver of her nail so it can't grow into her skin anymore. You can't even tell that part of it was removed now and she hasn't had any ingrowns since. Might be something to consider...
neionix 1 year ago
here in brazil the toe docor (i dont really know how these doctors are called..) the dont give any shots, they just numb the toe with paper and some hot water....it still hurts like shit, seems like they like to see us suffer...idiots
amourderose1 2 years ago
holy crap that's horrible. My kid and I have both had this done. besides the first needle to numb it, you can't feel a thing.
neionix 2 years ago
@neionix how long is the recovery from this?
Fujico6 1 year ago
Fujico--not long, a few days, depending on how bad the ingrown nail is. If it's a removal like this one, it's feeling better in 2 days or so. My kid was very prone to them, so this same toe was done about a year later and they used acid to stop the growth on part of the nail. That took over a week to feel better.
neionix 1 year ago
@neionix thanks i have gotten mine when i was really young but i dont remember.. and i got it done in the usa and im in japan now and am scared they wont numb it i also play soccer and train everyday and am afraid i am going to miss a day
Fujico6 1 year ago
I'm sure they'd numb it for you because they have to put that poker about an inch into the side of your nail. You might end up missing a day or 2, but you'll miss more than that if you don't get it taken care of because the pain just gets worse.
neionix 1 year ago
haha that must be scary :D
i hope one day they get a ingrown toenail.
And then they can see how it feels like

My friends brother had ingrown toe nails it was fucking gross. I got to see the removal and there was a bunch of blood.

I've had 2 removed its horrible my mother and 3 people had to hold me down so doc could give me shots and i was only 12 then. It was bad!
lumbeebrock 2 years ago
ive never had a toenail removed proffesionaly. i did lose my toenail on my big toe though,it was on my big toe. i was barefoot and my sister tried 2 squirt me wit the waterhose and 2 escape i tried 2 run in2 the house but i pulled the door over my toe and ripped the whole nail off. it only took 5 mths 2 regrow though.

bangsheep 2 years ago
I thought they were supposed to apply a tourniquet (sp?) to the toe?
PvtHudson98 2 years ago
The don't use a tourniquet Pvt, they give an injection that swells the toe with fluid, sort of acts as tourniquet from the inside out.

BernieMak86 2 years ago
LOL that's why they're not supposed to let you look at it. They had my kid practically flipped upside down when this was done, and I had it done when I was little and they had a sheet up.
neionix 2 years ago
I got to watch them take my nail off with no prob. it was the coolest thing ive probably ever seen, XD

my little girl has a ingrown toenail she is 10 she went to her doc and she didn't remove it she said it was not that bad she just got a wooden stick and slid it under the tonail to get any dirt out that she had in there. My little 10 year old is so scared to have it removed so we are doing the wooden stick thing to see if that works!

I so don't want to get mine out! I got mine from playing dodge ball in school and some kid stepped on my toe and it became in grown. I know it won't hurt but it looks so painful!!
computergeek50000 2 years ago 2
Yeah, it's not bad. when she had it done, she was sort of upside down and couldn't see it. I had mine done when I was a kid too and hey had it blocked off. I think the scary part is seeing it. That's why she wanted me to record it, so she could check it out later.
neionix 2 years ago
Can someone please be honest and tell me how much the needle hurts? Im pretty good with pain.. just not needles! Hahaha.
qFauxHawkp 2 years ago 4
The needle stings pretty badly, but it only lasts about 5 seconds and after that you can't feel anything
neionix 2 years ago
thats so gross. how do u even get ingrown nails
candi911sweet 2 years ago
stubbing or having someone stepping on your toe. cutting your toenail too much to the side is the most common way though -_--

GuitarHero016 2 years ago

ermm. Doctor did the same thing for me to. The shot hurts like hell but after that you don't feel anything. For people who had this surgery did you look at your toe after the needle? It was lumpy! I watched the needles go in, so gross!
Hope your daughters toe healed well :D

just had that done today. didn't hurt at all. ya the needles stung a little but it's nothing like what some people have told me. it just feels like a bee sting. not even that painful tho. less than that. but ya the surgery itself didn't hurt a bit. i didn't even know that they were done. lol but ya. if any1 who reads this comment is worried about it... Don't you'll be in and out of it in like 15 mins. you wont feel a thing after the needles. so don't worry. =)
pikleking23 3 years ago

legend1149 3 years ago
wooh thats not what they did to me. they first shot y toe with like a bb gun that had medicine in it that felt like a rubber band pop then they gave me a shot in the threee same places wich i couldnt feel the they took the side out.

i had a only abit of my nail took off on both big toes, they took off about 3mm of nail at the side where its ingrown and now it looks perfectly fine, none of the prossess hurt, they stuck 2 needles in each toe then i felt nothing at all, at the end they put some acid in my toe to stop the nail growing back.
birdey1994 3 years ago
Yeah, the needle really is the worst part but you'll get totally numb. then they fill your toe up with fluid to make it fat and purple but you can't feel that. depending on how bad the nail is, it shouldn't hurt too bad unless they have to put acid in there to stop the growth entirely. oh and johnboypitt...dude get over the foot fetish, she's 11!!!!!!
neionix 3 years ago
the needle is the worst part.
extremely painful... i would suggest you get it over with as the pain you get from an ingrown toenail when walking can be bad, and over time it gets more and more painful to walk on. just prepare yourself for a painful injection, because its the worst i've ever had.
