this is awesome! I've been using free to air satellite for years. Nobody has heard of it in USA except for a few immigrants. It's so sad that people don't know all the options available to them.
@jawbraeka DVB-T is a format only used throughout Europe and Asia and ATSC is only used in North America so you shouldn't have a reason to use both. If you are using a software version (ie computer tuner) you may have the option of selecting ATSC or DVB-T but if you are using a standalone receiver (ie set to box) this option may not be available and you would need to buy a DVB-T tuner
@christopherve7alb i understand that DBV-T and ATSC are for specific regions of the world but to be more specific i was talking in reference to a built-in tv receiver inside a television... i have a video to look at on my page (it should be the only one there) as i am wanting to buy a television from the USA but i'm not 100% sure if it will work over here in Australia as i have heard that it can use PAL Devices... I have an external PVR with a tuner to suit conditions of Australia
but i was just curious to know if it would pick up direct signal or if the the tuner could be modified to work with Australian digital signal? in other words, can i simply modify the tv tuner or is it case of software in the tv itself or is it both the tuner that would need to be modified or is it a case of the software not being compatible with Australian DVB-T Signal... oh and by the way i'm after a Vizio Television, something in the XVT series of TV's
@jawbraeka I wouldn't recommend using an ATSC TV to tune DVB-T, if you want to use the external PVR to tune DVB-T, I think most American TVs can receive PAL signals.
Also, digital OTA TV is not much good with an indoor antenna or at least not in any case where analog(ue) signals were/are poor. This I know from experience.
As far as I am aware, OTA or "terrestrial" TV here in the UK is actually fairly normal, so most people know about its ontinued existence. Over here, also, some regions can still get analog(ue) signals, but not for much longer (the digital conversion process is happening slowly, region-by-region and it's being well-publicised by the government, and broadcasters).
Most people still don't know about FTA satellite tho'- most of 'em just stick with Sky. There's "Freesat" but that's not the same!
If its not illegal then why did ftabins website shut down with many others? These were great websites with lots of reading information. Please explain.
@SexySeresa Because FTAbins was dealing with satellite piracy not true FTA. The reason piracy and FTA gets mixed up is because the pirates use FTA hardware to decode the encrypted signals.
It's amazing that some in North America are brainwashed into thinking that free tv no longer exists. I read on a forum about a Canadian who thought that watching tv over the air might be illegal for "avoiding cable fees". Here in the UK the majority don't have satellite or cable, I hope the same ignorance won't happen. But I wouldn't be surprised if old people are conned into subscribing to a satellite package after switchover.
@filmnet Well maybe not all of canada. Were I live in northern ontario canada we've been watching free tv for a very very long time since the FTA cards(remember those before the FTA receivers) its really popular in my area even the police officer have em.
Dish, Lnb, Dongle, Pvr Ready System, HardDrive, a bit of programming and scanning, internet to do guide and other updates, dish pointed south and payed technician if needed.
Great video. We need more people spreading this information. The cable/dish companies have brainwashed people into thinking free tv is illegal, which is shocking. Free TV has been around since the dawn of TV and Digital TV has actually increased the number of TV stations that one can get for free with an antenna. And the quality is better than cable. Facts the cable companies don't want you to know.
@ManicMonkeyJ yea who want's to pay for crap any ways we are just paying for shity commercial's and less tv shows or movies we get bits and peace's of a show or movie and more and more commercial what a piss off
Well most of the feeds that are on satellite are of field crews visiting the scene of a major news event. The studio cams aren't fed via satellite as the sat. feeds are just for remote crews sending stuff back to the station.
Many network feeds are unencrypted I routinely watch NBC, CBS, and ABC feeds, all you need is a dish aimed at the right satellite and an FTA receiver.
Is there a way that ExVu can trace my system somehow and find out that it's not being used at my buddy's address but at mine? Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Christopherve7alb, wanted to get your opinion on something. I got a buddy with an ExpressVu account. He's gonna activate at his house an HD/PVR receiver i bought just to get it activated, but then am gonna take it and use it at my house. This is basically called "Account Stacking" where u have 1 billing address but multiple addresses that have recievers and service too. Obviously ExVu doesn't like this, but it does happen ALOT, and it ain't illegal actually. That being said, can they bust us?
The worst bell can do is cut off the account of you and your buddy. It is possible for Bell to trace account stacking, they will do every once in a while what is called inventory and if you cant verify all the receivers are in the house then they'll cut off the ones that you can vouch for. This is done maybe once a year by Bell and it's over the phone. Make sure that the receivers located away from the account holders address are NEVER connected to the phone line as this will cut them off
Hey thanks for replying...ok so just so I understand fully, the ONLY way they bust us is if I plug mine into a phone line enabling them to see that it's not the same phoneline as the account holders address?
Thanks for all your hard work in putting this up. I think that you are the best resource so far in explaining FTA to me. So what is DVB? (In particular DVB-S). Is it just a term for digital video or a separate system entirely? I saw two programs named altdvb and dvbdream. Can these replace a receiver, or just pipe the stream to your computer?
DVB stands for digital video broadcast. It's just the form that the satellite signals are sent out in. All receivers are capable of receiving DVB signals. DVB-S is the same. To use a program to watch satellite TV ion your computer you need a satellite TV tuner card in edition to the software. The programs you listed allow you to watch satellite TV on your PC with a DVB tuner card.

DECODING ENCRYPTION RADIO WAVE IS ILLEGAL BUT,
F.T.A. Receivers are not stealing anything. They pick open and NON-ENCRYPTION radio wave the same way your Rabbit ears antenna works on your T.V. set

Agree, I'm working on creating a website dedicated to free legal TV that I can direct people to.
christopherve7alb 2 years ago
I'll be looking forward to that! Doing a Google search for over the air TV mostly just turns up old information about the digital conversion.
There desperately needs to be something to inform people that cable and dish are not the only option.
Canceled my cable earlier this year perfectly happy with free OTA. Saves 90 bucks a month.
Had no idea they they had people convinced these days that it might be illegal! O_o

How is it possible to view live sat feeds of local news affiliates and of course the national cable network news channels on a FTA dish?
I would love to be able to pipe into seeing what the local and news anchors are doing while slacking off on those annoying commercial breaks.
