I was on a plane that had a crosswind landing at Ontario Ca. I had a window seat and wondered why we were landing sideways. I think the passengers were clueless or in shock when we walked off.No one said anything.
I lived one-quarter mile SOUTH of the main runway in San Antonio TX where B-52s were refurbished and flown back into service. (1966) It is a miracle of engineering that these behemoths could take off in 30◦ quartering winds -- port or starboard -- by swiveling the dollies of the landing-gear to the direction of the runway while the entire bomber was facing INTO the winds !! Maximum correction is 30◦, but the plane frequently turned 15◦ more in the wind after rotation and gear-up.
The first 2 777's are landing in Roswell, NM. The 3rd is landing (i think) @ Edwards AFB. The 747 you see there is landing in Great Falls, MT. The A380 is probably landing in Keflavik Island.
The landing gear doesn't rotate to stay in line with the runway on most jets does it? The B-52 is the only one I've heard of that does that. That sucker can land literally sideways.
Damn, skillful pilots! Great work, I a Captain for the UAE Airlines, I fly 747's, and I can tell you all now, that Lisbon, Portugal is the worst EVER airport when it comes to crosswinds! I always get a horrible feeling when I get the flights to Lisbon, the whether there is always so unpredictable! Anyway, again, great work to these pilots!
I used to date a pilot from a Virgin Atlantic 747.... just 1 month before 9/11 I was in cockpit for the whole flight LHR YYZ...totally awesome experience... as we taxing at YYZ, all 3 pilots were critizing other planes that were landing.... their comments were so hilarious....
SpeedKlz - The crosswind landing is probably the only landing the on board computer CAN'T do, the autopilot/autoland function has no control of the aircraft rudder at anytime. The crosswind landing is all down to skill and training. It's why pilots get paid a lot.
see on any airport...landings are all down to pilot...airports only have landing aids...which help pilots with glideslope n centerline of runway not with landing with skill...or landing automatically...
This is a routine landing in Calafate, Argentina. Winds coming off a lake blow steadily across flat lands of Patagonia. Probably the pilot had done this many times....but we hadn't!
A forward-slip is useful when a pilot has set up for a landing approach with excessive altitude. The forward slip will allow the aircraft track to be maintained while steepening the descent without adding excessive airspeed. Since the heading is not aligned with the runway, the slip must be removed before touchdown to avoid excessive side loading on the landing gear, and if a cross wind is present an appropriate side slip may be necessary at touchdown.
It is called 'slipstreaming' and it is commonly used by jumbo jet pilots to rapidly burn off airspeed as they approach the landing strip. If you're coming in too fast, you can pull the nose up - but then you'd climb and overshoot the runway. This is why all of the jumbo jets wheels turn to line up with the runway. SO, there isn't necessarily a crosswind, although the technique can be used to counter one.
Got that right. My father was a pricipal Engineer at Boeing. Some of the test fils he showed me were amazing. Crazy test pilots. The slow speed takeoffs were the most extreme. Sparks everywhere.
I saw two F-4 Phantoms with both mains tore up on one side from x-winds at George AFB in the '90's. The next aircrew asked if they were going to be changed. The crewchief said "no sir, they're still within limits. Have a nice flight."

am a pilot and i love putting them down in cross wind :P its more fun and if you look most of these bad cross wind landings are made by britannia pilots which are long gone now but were great guys
stay clam and dont panic the best thing to do is no when to go around have that hand on the power ready to power up and go around even us airline pilot go around more often than you think.
I'm cool and calm but when i hit the ground the plane never wants to straighten out. So it's not me, it may be my plane. It's a tail dragger, i own a few world war one and two fighters and bombers. A private collection. But when i touch down, say in my Thunderbolt, it begins to skid and i cant land flat and straight, only shutting off the engine to land. Any ideas why?
right rudder all the way if that dont work its just the plane and its max cross wind is low. could try a light power once your down with right rudder might help a little with the positive airflow.
Okay, what about tricycle landing gear? Like in the P38 lightning? When i try, the whole plane slips either left or right, grinding the wing into the ground and leaving one wheel in the air. And i try so hard, even professionals say it's a toughie.
:D insanity!

@ xKevinIsWatchingYoux
Like the details mention, these are certification tests, i.e. these types are tested to see the limits under which a crosswind landing is safe.
Crosswind landing=a landing in which there is a significant wind component, vertical to the direction of the runway

Woah, i allways botch the Cross winded landings. Any advice for an avid pilot with an expert collection?

stay clam and dont panic the best thing to do is no when to go around have that hand on the power ready to power up and go around even us airline pilot go around more often than you think.

And i try so hard, even professionals say it's a toughie.

well my opinion is that putting down this steel giants sideways isn't the best option. However like we see it works really good ;)
