  • I made my Mom teach to do the Charleston when I was 13yo (1958)- she thought I was nuts, butt we had a ball if she were alive shed be 103 yo. Flapper material indeed she graduated HS in 1928.

  • This is the epitome of the 1920's.

  • This version of "Charleston" by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra is not "unpublished" but was issued on Timeless CD 1093, from which this upload no doubt was taken.

  • 1925... it must have been a great time back then!!!

  • My Father would be 103 yrs. old today...He danced the Charleston and went to speakeasies...

  • One of the most badass songs I've ever heard in my life. The song has some kind of "attitude" to it I can't describe.

  • I am 13 and I love listening to this!!!! This should be on the radio it makes me dance and I want to wear a suite like the other men and dance around!:))

  • to say they were cutting a rug would be a understatement.

  • Thanks to 'The Charleston," obesity did not exist in the twenties. effjay

  • @boojum2222 Hahaha ! Very funny comment. Greetings

  • Fantastic!

  • Nothing captures the spirit of the Roaring Twenties like this tune. And of course, the pictures of the bubbly dancers of the Charleston.

  • I loved the pictures. I enjoyed this.

  • Leggy lubriciousness and lively rendition of this old favorite.

  • I think this is one of eight takes that were made on the 7th May 1925 (probably take five) Victor recording session. This date in America is written as 5/7/25 and may have been misread to mean 5th July (as in Europe). Anyway, I much prefer this to the V19671B published version which I think was take eight ! Thanks G. 5*

  • I didn't know that there were so many takes. Until now, I had only heard take 8 (scat version) and I fell in love with that version.

But the purist in me prefers JP Johnson's stride piano version the best.

  • @Shackamaxon Yes, you have to give full credit to JP Johnson as the composer of Charleston and he was, importantly, a very good friend and mentor of the young Fats Waller.

  • @fatsfan70 - Correct; this is BVE 32576-5, issued in 1999 on a BMG-Buddha CD "20th Century Time Capsule" (Amazon has it). The original issue 78 is indeed Take 8. Amazing that all eight takes were cut that same day in Camden (5th Floor, Building 15)...

  • Wonderful video as always!!! 240252 I wish you a happy new year and I hope to see more videos like that. Best wishes

  • Wonderful video!

  • Grzegorz,

    I love this Charleston.

What a NIGHT! Rudy and I Tango-ed and Charleston-ed the night away.

We raised our glasses toasted YOU at 12.That Rudy can really do a mean

Charleston...he's not as good as YOU though. :-D Happy New Year!.

  • Genioa, I'm glad you were charlestoning all night with Rudy. As far as I know from him he is rather a tango-lover but his fidgety feet must do very well in the charleston too, I guess

  • Added to 1925 in my series of music playlists for EACH of the past 100 years!

A work in progress, these playlists will take you back in time to any year you choose and for 1950-1980 over 1 1/2 hours of music on each already . . . . . .

    Thanks for posting this ! ! !

  • Fantastic rendition!
