  • For some reason, I can't get Quake to work on my Code. It keeps crashing upon start. It makes no sense, because my phone is capable of true 3D games like Need for Speed Undercover. =\

  • Hi Mikeey. Which version of WM were you using when you made that video? I'm currently on 6.1 Professional and I just can't get Quake 2 to run in full screen landscape. All I can get is 240x180 and those crappy on screen directional buttons, that I can't get rid of. As soon as I switch to 320x240, be it Rght or Left, the game just crashes. Am I correct in assuming that you were on WM 6.0 or sth older when that video was made and there's not much we can do with 6.1? Thanks in advance!

  • @GordonFulcrum that's correct. One of the main graphics .dll files that quake 1 and 2 use changed from 6.0 to 6.1. I actually happened to be using a hybrid 6.1 version, with parts of 6.0 and parts of 6.1.

After I updated to a real 6.1 rom, I found that it took forever to actually load quake, then the screen was darker, and it was slower. And much like you said, trying to put it into landscape made it crash.

  • @mikeeey1337 Many thanks Mikeey! This saves me a lot of time that would have been spent on looking for a solution here. Keep up the good work!

  • Hi there, I know this may Sound a Little Stupid but will this be able to Run Quake on Win Phone 7 or Not Let me know soon!

  • @Btushinsky83 probably not. I remember that after an official version of WM6.1 was released it had a new driver .dll that made the quake ports un-playable unfortunately. Then when WM6.5 came out I was hoping that it would work but it still didn't, so I can only assume WM7 will be no different. The quake ports were developed for an older version of WM so it was only a matter of time before they stopped being playable.

  • Impulse 9! Ah, happy memories.

  • If this uses the same files as pc, we can make Team Fortress 1 Mobile

  • cheats in quake 1 :]

  • I just wonder if you can lower the detail... to play more smoothly

  • yeah there's some settings you can modify in the .cfg that would probably make it play more smooth, but it doesn't matter now, this video is old, I now have the nokia n82 which can play quake 3 at 30fps on high detail lol.

  • Well I recently got a XV 6900 aka HTC vogue and it has 400mhz cpu speed like the kaiser...

I was just looking for decent FPS games that would be fun to play through... played through quake on my PSP when i had one so i thought quake 2 would be fun

the selection of games for PDA's are really crappy, it was surprising to me.

  • yeah all the PDA games really suck now. especially compared to everything else.

I just got a 3rd gen 32gb ipod touch. I really hate apple but there's so much availible for it. And there's tons of hackers that make stuff for it. Apple tries to restrict you from all the great features of the ipod touch but hackers unlock them.

The average file size of most PDA games are around 4mb, for ipod games it's around 60mb - 150mb. Asphalt 5 is 250mb!

  • Yeah i've seriously considered buying an Ipod touch due to available FREE sofware for it... originally the Itouch was very restricted software wise becuase mac has always been so greedy they hate making money, but they recently made the switch to advertising the touch as more of a pda.... but honestly i'd rather use it as a PSP with a touch screen.

BTW best game for PDA is Pocket Heroes now dubbed Palm Heroes...

Only good games are ones ported by fans.. such a this one.

  • не могу устонивить игру(

  • how to download game?

  • quake1 graphics look better than 2 lol and runs smoother

  • if i put landscape mode in my kaiser Pocket Quake just close... any advise? particular version? regards!

  • mine does too, it's a problem with wm6.1, something about the ddi driver it uses not being compatible. So it only works on the old drivers from wm6.0. Really nothing we can do right now to fix this...

  • iphone runs quake 3 on 30 fps without accelerator, i was gonna get the same phone but now im gonna get iphone 3gs

  • you were gonna get the kaiser? will I'm glad you didn't. However if you wanna play quake 3 get the nokia n82 or nokia n95 8GB. I'm getting the Nokia n82 when I get a job and it's an AMAZING phone. Just look at some of the videos. it plays better than the iphone (not sure about the 3gs). I just know that with the iphone it starts to slow down when you play with more than 2 bots. Also, didn't you mean WITH an accelerator? not without..

the n82 and n95 can play with accelerator and buttons =D

  • the reason I'm very much against the Kaiser is because it sucks.. well, it's just not fast enough. It was basically HTC's "test device" when the qualcomm CPU was just being released, so it was never as fast as it was supposed to be.

If you wanna see how quake 3 runs on the symbian OS I recomend checking out the video made by "sarge" showing the N95 playing quake 3. Just type "quake 3 n95" and it's the first result.

The reason I prefer the n82 over N95 is it's camera + xenon flash and micro SD.

  • alright... thanks ill check that out

  • umm i dont know about N95, my friend had that phone, he said that after a while of using he started having problems with buttons, but he had the silver one.. the phones processor is 332MHz, iphone 3gs is 600MHz, 95 has however better camera, more colors, stereo speakers... its a good phone but not as powerful..(( and i dont think the battery life is good enough, N82 is basically the same as95, just less battery life.. honestly im so confused i used windows mobile all the time and now on iphone:/

  • yes the silver N95 really sucks.. plus, it doesn't have enough ram to run quake 3. the black n95 is the good one, but NOT the N96, that one is just a failure lol.

Actually, not only can the n82/n95 be considered "dual core", but they have the same graphics accelerator as the iphone, the PowerVR MBX, which is 220mhz. So really the n82/n95 have a total of 552mhz. I'm not sure if the 600mhz of the iphone includes that of the PowerVR MBX... I just know the speeds are almost identical.

  • you don't buy a phone to play games on it.you buy a 100$ PSP for that.

  • It's funny you mention that cause just earlier today I was thinking about buying a PSP some time in the future.

Now keep in mind this video is old, and it's with my older phone, I now have the n82 which plays all the quake games at perfect speed. I still do like to have a phone that does a lot lol, yet the n82 is still very simple, it's a bar phone and easy to use.

  • and yes, the battery has less capacity, but I'm not sure if this neseccerely means the battery life is less. Since it is a candybar phone with a smaller screen, it will take less to power it, compared to the iphone's big screen.

ah it's the N82 that has better camera, not N95. If you go to the forum "symbianfreak" you'l find comparisons of the n82 and n95 all the time.

so as far as the iphone, I just know that it emulates games like GBA and SNES at full speed, but so does N82 and N95. =)

  • You know something about the Sony Ericcson Xperia X1? You know, how fast it is with games, etc.?

  • from what I've heard, it isn't too much better than my kaiser. It has roughly the same processor. This is why I'm leaving windows mobile for now, they are starting to fall behind and everything else is surpassing them, I'll have a Nokia device, then hope in a few years windows mobile speeds back up.

  • I tried to play Pocket Quake on my Samsung Omnia pocket PC but somehow it keeps giving me this GFX.wad error...

  • that just means you dont have quake in the right directory. you folder just be called "quake" and it should be in either:

    /Quake

    or

    /Storage Card/Quake

  • cheater :D

  • how do you play in full screen dude

  • Hey, I appreciated your replies on the other two videos I commented on. Thanks.

I have another probably weird sounding question for you. Are you able to move around and fire your weapon at the same time (or even strafe)? It seems like cell phones can only handle one or two buttons being pressed at once and no more. For example, I've seen people emulate Super Mario Bros. on their smartphones but not be able to press the directional pad and A + B at the same time.

  • Swype's the name of the technology. You can find it on youtube. I'd still want a keyboard. Made slim.

D'you really think I should preserve this and sell it on ebay asap for a Pro? Is the keyboard that much better? I know the RAM is :P

  • so all in all.. I think you should get the touch pro, being that everything about it is better except the memory. apparently the Touch Pro's battery is even better, it's 1350 mAh, while the Diamond's is only 900 mAh.

check pdadb(dot)net and compare the features there.

One thing I reeaaaly look forward to is the Touch Pro's Video out!

  • Thanks I'm really really gonna consider getting a TP now. Man I wish I had a TP in my hand BEFORE I sold my Diamond. But life doesn't work like that :(

There's actually a thread in the Diamond section in xda-devs on whether TV-out is possibleon Diamond. I was gonna have a good laugh as I entered the thread, but you know it COULD be possible...since the hardware is almost completely identical. Due to promoting TP they may just have decided to leave TV-out out of Diamond.

  • really? well that would be cool if they did get it working, I wonder if anyone has tried plugging in their home made TV out cables from their TouchPro's yet. I'm defiantly gonna make one of those cables when I get one.

I hear there is a problem with the TouchPro registering assigned keys on the keyboard while trying to play emulators, but I think there is a fix or temporary fix for that. I wanna see some video of how it handles pocketSNES and GBA.

  • try playing emulation with just a touch screen alone, good luck

  • hey,

i settled for a diamond in the end :P

nothing new and revolutionary has been announced for a while now. but cod2 (hw accelerated) runs at excellent speeds and is sweet! im gonna try quake 3 as well.

i heard there was an ms phone to be announced in feb which while utilise the nvidia chipset :S

  • did you hear that from the comments I was typing? or a different website? if you heard it somewhere else that's awesome! I hope to see this phone, you should have goten the Touch Pro over the Diamond, of corse unless you dont use a keyboard.

I was the Touchpro (Fuze), but if an Nvidia WM phone is on it's way maybe I should wait...

  • Nah I heard of the MS phone off of a few different websites.

I still am thinking of selling my Diamond and Elfin for a Pro. But it's just so damn expensive and seems unreachable :S

The only thing that worries me about an MS WM phone is that it may be insanely ugly or way too big!

  • I doubt it will be big, I mean, yes, normally they dont take those things into consideration, but being they are trying to compete with the iphone I dont see why they wouldnt try to make the device slim. I most certainly hope it has a keyboard.. I'm gonna do some googling on the MS phone, see what I can find.

  • Doubt the keyboard, I mean yes it is useful, esp. for gaming, but the Dream didn't win any popularity points did it? Do you think the new Swipe (I think it was that) technology will be in it for text input?

  • Lol just realised my sentence started out the same as yours. Fail.

    D'OH!

  • lol i didnt realize that till you pointed it out..

Swipe is all software technology right? no extra hardware neede? if so it will soon be avaible on xda developers lol.

Well the only advantage of the diamond is more ROM memory, 4gb. But the Touch Pro has more RAM, ram is better, being that you cant expand it with a memory card like you can with ROM. So a memory card can make up for the Touch Pro's Rom memory.

  • my prophet oc on 300MHZ runs quake i at 20-28fps and quake2 at 8-16fps

  • lucky. I want a new phone, one without the crappy qualcomm processor.

  • hi,

i've just read all your comments on ppc and i was very close to getting a kaiser. i have an elfin at the moment, but want to be able to play games. you mentioned nvidia processor ppcs...do you know the names of any? thanks in advance

  • hey, it's called the Nvidia APX 2500. you can search it on google or even here on youtube!

  • oh...my...god...that looks like it can play crysis LOL. its a chipset though. dyou know any phones announced with the chipset?

to all, search for "nVIDIA APX 2500 UI" on youtube for a mindblowing sample of the power of this chipset. and it takes very little power as well.

  • haha yeah. no unfortunatly i know of none, and there will probably be pcoket pc devices before pocket pc phones come out. probably some time in 2009 we will see phones with this processor.

  • yes but it n0t cuming unti11 mid 2009

  • really? where did you read that? do you know if it will be offered by any phone companies here in the US? Or can it only be bought online?

  • hey mikey its me gtatec9 and i ditched my htc touch for a touch dual and you are right those Qualcomm processors really slow Q3CE down to a crawl

  • yeah... being that it's october now I would assume they should have some new devices any time now. you should have waited till they came out with anything that isnt qualcomm.

  • do you kno how to map a back button for the menu? i cant figure out what to type in the autoexe.cfg

  • is was lookin at some videos on quake 3 on iphone running perfet. i dont understand how a phone as expensive as the tilt can't even play quake 1 without lagging like crazy. is the iphone just packing more power? im regretting choosing the tilt

  • well.. for one.. htc used a realy slow processor in the kaiser, much worse than any ever created lol. The HTC Wizzard is faster than the Kaiser.

Second, every program out there is optmized for the iphone, while most pocket pc programs and games are optmized for all pocket pc's not, a single one. It's focused more on devices that use Omap and Xscale processors, the kaiser uses a qualcomm processor. it SUCKS!

if only they used a better processor and the apps were optmized...

  • do you know the specific commands? i tried "turn left" and "look left" both of these popped up with the message unknown command?

could u email me ur autoexe file?

  • yeah im pretty sure the command is just "left" and "right"

  • hey on quake 1 how do you look left and right? i can only do it with the touch screen which lags like hell.

  • you can adjust the key's left and right to look left and right, but you must also do this in the autoexec file or it will go back to strafe left and right by default.

  • God damn it. I'm really confused now. Can you advise me wich one PDA with touchscreen I should buy? I like listen music, watch films, play games.

By the way thanks for all :)

  • lol..at the moment..every pocket pc now uses the Qualcomm Processor, and anything else has been discontinued. end the end of this year and mid way through next year there will be some Nvidia processor phone being released, these will play quake 3 at 60fps with max detail and quality. so right now..im not sure what to suggest.. might wanna wait a few months around september/october when the new devices are released and see what's out.

  • I recommend a dell Axim (x50v, x51v) they are fast pda's and not too expensive.

  • Try the HTC Touch Diamond or the HTC Touch Pro. They both have built-in hardware accelerated graphics chips.

  • yea the kaiser 2 but there are no drivers

  • So you trying to say that htc touch diamond will lagg in games?

  • well quake 1 may play well, quake 2 will probably lag. so yeah it may lag.

I dont think they fixed the touchscreen bug either, when you touch the screen and everything lags.

  • So htc touch diamond have video driver?

  • eh...it has a video driver..but nothing god. still plays quake 3 at 1fps. lol. the drivers being developed for the kaiser are a combination of the diamond video drivers as well as some other ones.

The touch diamond is gonna be as fast (if slower) than the kaiser. So far, if it has a qualcomm processor, it sucks!

  • just installed that on my kaiser yesterday night

dude how do you manage to get rid of all those 50-percent-of-the-screen-buttons-movement-part...is there some kind of cfg value or so? would love to play that in fullscreen ....I also used the pocketmatrix version...

  • in the autoexec file make sure it says this:

    // Start in portrait

    vid_mode "1"

    viewsize "100.000000"

    togglemenu

    unbind "alt"

    i think that should work.

  • hey mickeeey - thanks for the hint! will test ist as soon as possible & thanks for the all the htc vids, sugar for all htc owners :) !

  • How did you get it to run soo smooth? It runs choppy as hell on my 8925!

  • did you get the quake from pocketmatrix or in the link i provided up above? this one is faster than pocketmatrix's.

  • Im using pocketmatrix because im pretty much a noob when it comes to stuff like this so I just know how to copy and paste on my mem. card!Lol!How would I use the version your using?Iv put everything on my phone (the .rar files) and I can not get them to work.

  • gay! i can play this at faster speeds on my DS i mean come on lets see some quake 3 i mean theres been a port for ppc since 2005 and ur mikeeey1337 u should noe u saw the vid by DamienAstaroth

  • do some reading up on the Kaiser. The HTC Kaiser (or AT&T Tilt, TyTN II, p4550) is the first ever Device HTC released using the Qualcomm processor. Normally they would use Xscale and Omap. On the 8525 they introduced the Samsung processor. It was a little slower than Xscale, making it worse. Anyway, the qualcomm processor has been the worst yet, well not so much the hardware itself is bad, but we were given no display drivers to properly use the hardware.

  • you can think of it as a PC with a new video card, but not installing the driver's CD that comes with it, it will be slow and you can use it to it's full potential, this is exactly what HTC did to us, so we are stuck with these devices SLOWER than the HTC wizzard, which is years older than the Kaiser. However with recent developement of the HTC Diamond, developers have managed to reverse engeneer the drivers to work on the Kaiser. at htcclassaction(dot)org they got a kaiser running openGL!

  • so r u saying the diamond can run quake 3 well?

  • well you know any windows mobile pocket pc can run it, but cant it run well? well im not sure. in a OpenGL benchmark, the Kaiser scored HIGHER than the Diamond using the diamonds same drivers! strange huh? i guess this is cause the diamond is VGA and the Kaiser is QVGA so it doesnt need as much processing power. in the benchmark the Kaiser scored 136fps and the Diamond scored 84fps or something. it was a pretty big difference. I'll have to ask someone to test Quake 3 on the diamond for me.

  • i'm having the same problem as koolaidman...

all i downloaded was the exe's....do i also need to download the source code from the link below it?

  • i'm trying to play this on my tilt, but all i get is an error saying "W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad"

do i need an emulator or something to play it??

  • you dont have it in the right directory. make sure it's on the Root of your storage card called quake or quake2

  • can I put this amazing game on an HTC touch?????

  • yes, try it for yourself, follow the link.

  • YEP

  • I have an 8525 and my only problem with quake 1 is that I can't open and close the menu using any of the buttons on my device, meaning I can't play full screen with the keyboard out, cuz when I go to the video screen and pick it I can't exit the video select screen... ANY IDEA HOW I CAN FIX THIS???

  • i had the same problem, and it took me a while to finally configure a key for exit. but if you download it from that site i thought the camera button should act as an escape button?

  • new to all this and about to choose an HTC. Can games like this run on touchscreens without the slide out keyboard?

Gotta make my choice tomorrow and wouldnt want to not be able to play this!!

  • yes they can, but read what i said in the other comment you left, your better off with a keyboard, as it's more comfortable and you dont need to worry about lack of buttons.

  • try it on my htc tII. thanks

  • wow...graphic is awful and laggy. is that software rendering mode or opengl mode?

  • yea quake 2 is a bit laggy, since ive done a few rom flashes it's probably improved 1 or 2 fps...not that much tho. yes i wish it was openGL but its all software based, so my guess is it wont get any faster than that...

  • so thats mean all cell dont supporting opengl?

  • no it just means that this ported version of quake 2 doesnt support open GL, devices can still support it. if someone was able to add open GL support into the code and the device could support it then it would work, unfortunatly this build doesnt have openGL.

  • damn htc, i so hate them -- they lie, cheat, steal.

  • Hi, what config.cfg file do you use? I can't make the game run wide screen. Where can I get the file or can you help configure the settings to run it widescreen and commands for keypad?

  • Horrible video. Keep the PPC still godamnit.

  • "Pocket" PC. not desktop. of corse it's gonna move. besides its only the first 30 seconds that im moving it.

  • K, i guess i was being too picky truth be told. Nice seeing the speed ;)

  • Where do i get WAD files ?:(

  • lol cheats XD

  • Thanks for the post. This rocks. I have this phone and love it. My wife wants to know if there is a Sonic the Hedgehog game for this phone? She's always asking to play games on my phone.

  • yep, there are multiple sega gennesis emulators which you can run it, unfortunatly its kinda old, and this phone is new, its not writen properly for this phone. basicly the processor cant take advantage of anything. however ill send you the link in a message.

  • you fucking cheater

  • =D of corse!

  • well I don't blame you..controlls seem bloody tricky to me...

  • im the one that made the controls so theyre easy for me, easy to get used to, i wouldnt need the cheats, but just showing that they do infact work.

  • well i'm glad you can get comfortable with the controls..and I myself cheat too..but only after I complete the game on the hardest skill..(unless it's really hard then I'll just leave it to the one before the hardest) then I start havind fun with the cheats:)

  • i usually beat it on medium and then do that, unless hard has a different ending or something like that.

  • well quake does have alot better experience in hard or nightmare skill...cos I like it hard..and there are often alot more enemies in one level placed on places where normally no enemies would be..so it stays entertaining..that's why I completed quake on all skill levels allright the nightmare skill had me down in the 3rd episode in the 5th level:P

  • yea nightmare? i never play that difficulty. like in doom, when enemies start to respawn thats just unfair lol.

  • yea it's really hard..you have to have all the levels completely in your head and have to know where every monster will be so you''ll be prepared..if you dont know where they are they can surprise you, then they start running and get hard to hit..

  • what was the command to make it run in landscape? It was like "vid_mode 2" in PQ. Could you tell me how to make it in PQ2?

  • how about quake 4? :D just kidding, cool

  • quake 2 doesnt run too fast

  • no it doesnt, the reason is cuz the kaiser uses a very fast Processor, the Qualcomm 7200 chipset, this is the first phone to ever use this CPU, and qualcomm hasnt even made drivers for it thought, however, when there are drivers avaible it will be WAY faster. it'l have 3D acceleration. when they do this im going to try quake 3, cuz right now quake 3 is like 2fps.

  • sweet! cool vid anyway

  • it was easy to install, but i did need to edit the .cfg file for the controls i wanted, most games youl need to do that, cuz not everyone is used to the default controls. check on xda i made a topic about this in the kaiser section, you can find the .cfg files there.

for quake im using the full version, for quake II it's the shareware version. it wont let me post links but just search on google "quake shareware"

  • did u need alot of tweaks to install or was easy ?

Did u buy the w=game or freeware :)

    where ?
