I think my GF thinks I'm crazy because I do this kind of thing in our backyard. I just can't help it, we have pretty cool little creatures back there: Solifugae, velvet ants (wasps), lizards, all sorts of spiders, the occasional centipede, etc. Just tonight there were a bunch of bats flying around! It's awesome! The other day, my GF, my son and I all went hiking around in the mesa and saw a few millipedes and a giant tarantula hawk. I just can't help but get excited.
The strength of that thing in relation to it's size :O The tenacity of some of the insect family never ceases to amaze me, just phenomenal. Thank you for sharing this ~PG~
I've seen the full size version in real life in Tx. That can't be a real tarantula hawk, just a close relative. The ones I've seen were nearly the size of humming birds.
fascinating stuff!

@PlanetOfTheAtheist Just like in the Alien movies. They based the creature on the ichneumonid wasps, similar to these. interesting!

How many of these burrows do you think you stepped on when following this wasp?
Frosttty 6 months ago
Angry Wasp: maybe you should change the prefix before 'f00t'! It took me an eternity to retrace my route because of your warmblooded primate stench!
(btw, have you ever noticed that -like electrons- insects too start dicking around when they're being observed..? Almost as if they know :O )

Let me get this straight, Thunderfoot is walking about barefoot in an area where painful wasps prance along the ground? It's madness I tell you.
MrShannonite 6 months ago
So if the wasp didn't come back would the spider recover?

A grown man chasing down an insect for over 10 minutes.
Science really does let you keep your childhood fascination with everything your entire life.
