  • Where was this? I saw them that year at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester.

  • @sn1111111 This Video is from the Second's Out Promo Video and was filmed in Dallas Texas on the 19th March :) And by the way, you seem to be one of the lucky guys who saw a live performance of All in a Mouses Night. Because this song got kicked out of the setlist in late January and the whole tour on, it was left out :-(

  • No matter who was doing the Voice Peter or Phil Great is Great.

  • Enorm Bedant!

  • Did anyone catch that roll that Phil does when he jumps back on the drums? INCREDIBLE! Phil and this lineup of Genesis will always be one of the all time best!

  • Phil is the one that went the more commercial route, but he has also proven he can be pretty weird at times. Peter and Phil definitely had a different way of doing things, but both their unique insticts gave us music with genesis that no other band could even dream to come up with. Its pointless to say who was better, both of these guys took a different approach, and both pof them recorded songs with genesis that totally nailed it if you take the time to listen. Trick of the tail is amazing

  • great

  • Good shit. All though I've known about Genesis for along time I'm barely starting to get into them. This is a great jam. For me, the jury still out on who's the better front man Peter or Phil.

  • Genesis has been my favorite for almost 20 years, and I love Peter era much more than Phil's. But it's not even a question that Phil is a much better singer. It just doesn't sound right to us because we're so used to hearing Peter on all these classic songs, but if you really listen, Phil sings with much more power, conviction and emotion in his voice. God, I wish Genesis stayed prog!

Thank you for some honest objectivity even though it conflicts with your personal preference. I completely agree with your statement, with the exception that I prefer Phil as the lead.

    Video stroke.

  • Phil at his hairiest...

  • This is Genesis at its best. Thompson on drums and Hackett on guitar. Don't get me wrong, Stuermer is awesome but he's no Hackett.

  • Genesis was a pure rock band till May 1975. After then they slowly became a pop rock band. Even though I completely agree this statement from "shaggyshadric" : "No one can ever replace Peter Gabriel... Phil did what he could and that's good enough for me"

  • Who is in Phil's spot on the drums on this?

  • @blutocampbell Chester Thompson... I think.

  • @mazely I completely agree. Just some people on here calling him no talent might not even know that Phil was with the band from the start, and if it wasn't for him drumming I do not think their music would have been anywhere near as good. Phil is not the same though. Although their first 2 albums with phil as the leader were quite good then it turned into............yuck.

  • Using drugs was more permissive at the time !!

  • I don't see how anyone can say Phil has no talent at all considering even if he sucks at singing in some peoples opinion if you say Phil sucks all around then you say Genesis has always sucked. Phil has and always will be one of the most talented drummers in rock music, and what most people seem to forget is Phil was the drummer for Genesis since the beginning then stepped up to vocals when Gabriel left.

  • how he dares to say "I'm Rael"?

  • @leovinci65 Beacuse its in the lyirics, maybe?

  • This version makes me want to puke. Even the keys sound second rate as if Phil made Tony change his sound to a cheaper Bontempi crap he is playing. They are two bands. Genesis with Gabriel that ended in '74 and then this wannabe-mainstream sound this bearded devil is trying to achieve here. One thing though, Wind and Wuthering kicked serious ass. Thanks for that one Steve.

  • phi is a fantastic drummer, singer, songmaker, actor

listen to testify cd too : a very good voice !

  • Genesis, The Lamb Live at the Shrine 3-disc 2CD/DVD set available at TommygunVideo, see our channel for link and more details

  • Peter Gabriel's a musician; Phil Collins is an entertainer.

  • @mazely

    Uhhh... no.

  • @mazely WOW, you have that completely and precisely ASS-BACKWARDS. Go talk to some seasoned studio musicians and see if they agree with that clap-trap.

  • @1776Matthew I despise "seasoned studio musicians". You didn't have to be that aggressive, it's just my opinion.

  • that's nice venturecrew...and i'd have to agree because nobody can fill gabriels shoes! so there was three......and everyone moved forward and i'm grateful because i truely enjoy gabriel's solo career.

  • Phil is better then Peter. A better Voice...

  • everytime I hear that piano in the beginning, I just feel the hair stand up on y arm, even tho this is NOT gabriel, still love the song

  • God, Phil! get a razor!!!! lol. love ya Phil........he looks like Tom Hanks in cast away.

  • Phil Collins with hair. Who would have thought it.

  • @MrBilbo81 indeed.

  • The real Genesis fans will always prefer the Peter Gabriel the Phil "down, down down" Collins era. Gabriel as a frontman, is in a different stratosphere to Collins. Gabriel understood and lived those early Genesis songs - Collins does not and could not That's the difference. Phil Collins once said, " I could never out Pete, Pete ! " - and do you know what - he was right.

  • legendary album, but the barded collins looks rather sucks

  • In the live versions Phil performs this way better than Peter IMO.

  • i do prefer the live versions with phil too the live versions from the lamb tour but the repetition thing phil has always done live "lies down DOWN DOWN DOWN" does get a little annoying at times in some songs it works but in this it doesn't

  • sorry, I idisagree, Peter's voice is just totally superior, much greater range and expression

  • yes i agree but i just think Phil sings it with more passion. I saw a vid of peter performing this and he just seemed not that into it.

  • @scandial I totally agree with you ! Nothing compares to Peter Gabriel's range and gritty voice...Phil did his best to imitate it, but how to measure up to ...his master's voice ?!

  • peter gabriel is great but so is phil collins !!

  • So many opinions about the REAL Genesis posted on here. Who cares? Don't you have anything else to contribute? Stop cloging the comments with views of this material .... its pitiful

  • Without Peter Gabriel this Genesis is only remake... Collins should never take the place from Peter G. . In matter of music a historical pity shame... here this smal movie part say all...

  • Thats right... Genesis without Gabriel and Hackett is nothing but a leftover... Banks, Collins an Rutherford simply are a very different combination of artists... another band...

  • Yeah... The Last Time I Saw A Photo Of Simon Collins, It Looked Like HE Was Going Through His "Beard Phase" In HIS "Musical Carreer"... ... He Likes That "Metaphysical Shite", I Guess It Picks Up The Dumb Hippy Chicks From Surrey,BC... ... They All Think That He's JESUS!!! ... ... I Guess THAT Means That "Jay Sun" From "Bedoin SoundClash" Is PROBABLY JUDAS!!! ... ... (Because We All Know That "Alex" Is PAUL!) ... ... ... !
  • LOL... some of you guys. Arpeggiator? People used to actually play instruments, and write music. People use arpeggiators to make up for a lack of skill in playing their instrments.

And Collins (Phil, that is), he has a voice, and a reasonably good one. When he's singing "his" tunes, it's a very good voice. When he's singing songs Gabriel did, they are just covers, no matter how good they are.

  • Ed, I couldn't have said it better myself, I assure you. The Tony Banks crosshanded technique is a major-league big deal that seems to have been largely forgotten except by folks like us. And yes, Phil is a great singer, and though he's not as talented vocally as Peter G., he's still a major vocal talent and a great drummer indeed.

  • Tell Tony Banks that unskilled musicians use arpeggiators. (see Duke's Travels)

  • LOL. Ok, I'll pull back on my comment. Sometimes skilled musicians use arpeggiators. But very often, people use them to make up for skills they don't have. I don't think Banks is one of *them*. I believe Banks uses them... but I'd bet he could play any of those parts without.

  • It's all right. I happen to fall into the category of musicians who are significantly better at writing than playing. I do agree that technology has made things annoying - automatic chord generators for example. I do take comfort in that the people who need these crutches really don't understand the theory behind it all and are probably not going to experience much success. But in days where a DJ can press a button and be hailed a genius, I'm with you to a large degree.

  • @BaronvonCase MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE AND JORDAN MAXWELL ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS A HOLISTIC PSYCHEDLIC PROG ROCK BAND THAT IS NOW DEFUNCT BUT HAS FOUR STUDIO CD'S AND ARE SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • Poor synth player is just beating the shit out of those keys. " My Kingdom for an arpeggiator ".

  • who is playing drums?

  • @kenmtb Looks like Chester to me.

  • HATE COLLINS

  • @derek6678421 Peter Gibrel IS the ture lamb but don't go tharshing Peter Collins! Peter Collins' awesome, too!

  • @derek6678421 Sorry, I mean Phil Collins. Gettin confused!

  • Please sir Go Die. Man I hope you run into Doktor Dyper

  • i don't think he cuts off windscreen wipers just for the fun of it lol

  • The real Genesis ! Sorry about Peter, he was the real lamb

  • phil sings some of gabriels songs better than gabriel-carpet crawlers,i know what i like.(alot of the softer stuff) phil couldnt sing the harder stuff till about 1980(he really had command of his vocals by then) by then they werent doing to much gabriel era stuff anyway

  • A well deserved induction into the HOF. Long overdue.

  • Phil's voice is inappropriate for the song.

Similarly Gabriel's voice would be inappropriate for Susudio.

  • LOL, but I agree!

  • Both Phil and Peter were good, but as with many other bands that had to switch up their lead signers, can't expect the new one to live up to the other.

Phil and Peter have different voices and styles so neither one can sing each others songs as well as the true author can. Saying phil can't sing Peters song right, well, yea, he can't. Cause it's Peters song.

But he left and they had to go on so gotta give him credit for even stepping up and trying to fill the spot of such a good artist.

  • progessive rock sucks

  • you like slipknot.

  • I'll give 'em a chance - afterwards. Any slipknot recommandationS?

  • absolutely not, they're horrible. i was telling "zimmcat" off.

  • Awesome,so cool!

  • love the light dies down on broadway :O))

  • I like the 4 man line up best. Trick of the Tail is the best album they ever made.

  • Does anyone care renderview..Listen to the music you may enjoy it...

  • After Gabriel leave Genesis , Genesis is not Genesis anymore! Collins have not the voice and not the spirit of P. Gabriel. Far away from old Genesis. Peter Gabriel was Genesis in there i have a full pocket of feelings and experience i will not miss and will not come back, may in 1000 years again when human find out that money can make you happy!! But a simple part of music like this can...

  • blablabla.

    yawn.

  • So why did Gabriel leave Genesis?

  • Yeah, Collins put something different, on the edge betwen commercial (what he became after) and ... I don't know how to describe it, maybe less hermetic without betraying the original soul... Tjat's my point of view, and music is only a point of view matter anyway. Not better, not worst but different.

  • Genesis without Gabriel is like the Rolling Stones without Jagger or the Pistols without Lydon. It just doesn't work.

  • YES! you pinned it. thats exactly what i said

  • Really? Where did you say it?

  • The "many" fans who prefer post Gabriel Genesis were not old enough to have seen the 5 man classic line-up.

I know of no Genesis fans of my era prefering Collins to Gabriel.

Gabriel, as frontman/vocalist/performer with Genesis, was in a different league to Collins - and I saw both during the 70s

  • anyone who knows the history of genesis knows that Phil had Peters blessing to move forward with the music while stewarding the legacy that was Gabriel. As it happened Phil Collins totally made the music his own and many fans prefer the Collins versions of Gabriel classics, while adoring the future music that Peter provided. Love them both, that's what i say

  • peters better

  • @venturecrew06 True, Phil even did drums on Peter's solo albums(some)

  • @venturecrew06 if this didnt happen we wouldnt have had the greatest song ever Salisbury hill!

  • @venturecrew06 "As it happened Phil Collins totally made the music his own and many fans prefer the Collins versions of Gabriel classics, while adoring the future music that Peter provided."

That perfectly describes my view of the situation. Gabriel was a dynamic showman, but his vocal performance with Genesis was total, utter, unmitigated CRAP. Frankly, it seemed as thought the songs were out of his range or something, and they were destined for Phil's interpretation. Solo, Gabriel is great.

  • hmm wonder whos the most successful person in genesis, wow i think its phil collins, btw I love peter gabriel but his voice did not sound good back then sorry all that caterwalling was not cute

  • at last!! someone who knows what the fuck they are on about!!!

    i totally agree

  • Alright, look, I think it's fair to say that both Phil and Peter were talented artists, or they wouldn't have made it so far.

The fact is Peter left Genesis, they had to continue, and Phil was the best they could get. The fans wanted to hear old and new stuff, so Phil had to do his best at singing Peter's lyrics. Personally, I think they could've done a lot worse for a replacement.

No one can ever replace Peter Gabriel, so lay off ok? Phil did what he could and that's good enough for me.

  • @Shaggyshadric

The only bad part of Phil taking over the lead, was that he could no longer play the kind of drums that would have kept him in the same percussion circles as Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford and Neil Peart...

  • @queencitykids and Phil wasn't nearly the same showman Peter was. I like them both, don't get me wrong, but I do wish there was a few more Peter Gabriel Genesis albums out there. He had a very unique style in those years that no one has now, not even him. btw, I'm mad at Peter cause he ditched the induction of Genesis to the rock and roll hall of fame. I wanted to see him there :[

  • @Shaggyshadric Just imagine what it would be like if Peter reformed with Genesis for one more album....

  • @readinguni99 wow, imagine... dont make me imagine it! now i feel nostalgic...

  • @readinguni99 though we could start a fans movement to try and make it happen! posting at genesis videos and facebook, etc internet power!

  • @queencitykids phll was much better...on the drums and everything else, just like reni in the stone roses

  • is this the version phil collins sings

cause its not as good as with peter

Collins should stick to the kit, its what he is good at

  • Great!

  • Phill STFU You ruined the song

  • not as easy as it looks, is it collins?

here's an idea: why don't you drive the band into mediocrity?

  • better yet, stick to drums, it's what you're good at.

  • why do you love phil collins so much, suxass?

    is it because of "sussudio"?

or the "ricky, don't lose my number" song?

    or his "miami vice" appearances?

    or his disney's "tarzan" soundtrack?

Or is it because you really ARE phil collins trolling around YouTube under the incredibly hypocritical nome de plume "TheUtubesuxass"?

  • well the songs you suggest in your vast chasm of musical knowledge says it all :O))

enjoy what's left of your sad existence.

  • go listen to your meaningless songs that sound like a person was singing drunk while we listen to something good.

  • mit das beste was es gibt

    danke

  • I didnt kniw Teen Wolf could sing! What about Stylez?

  • LOL

  • This song is so easy a caveman can do it!! :)

    Sorry, I just had too!

  • LOL

  • The end of The Musical Box always gives me goosebumps! Fantastic!

  • It is Bill.

  • Sorry Guys! I was wrong it is CHESTER THOMPSON! You can see him once.

  • You're absolutely correct. Bruford toured with the band only on the Trick tour of 1976; this film was done on the Wind tour, by which point Steve hadn't yet left and Chester had joined.

  • Seconds out was taken from Paris, France recordings in 1976 & 1977. Bruford played drums on cinema show on the album from 1976

  • Fd* Aye, Vesa Aaltonen, Almost, Most Certain, Herr Kaptein.

  • nice

  • I'm not so sure Phil is a clueless as everyone wants to make him out to be.

Early Genesis: He had by lines on most of the songs with Tony Banks.

He figured out the money part quick, Mike Rutherford eventually did (but not until later) and didn't hit at the same level.

Phil is now one of the richest men alive.

Call it sellout if you want, but I sure as heck wouldn't call it clueless.

  • Phil is fucking clueless

  • Phil is an okay vocalist. I mean, he did a great job with Genesis after Peter left, but his voice doesn't match Pete's ferocity on this song. Still, A Trick of the Tail is a great follow-up to this album, even if it sounds COMPLETELY different than this masterpiece.

  • who is drumming here?

  • Bill Bruford, I think, but I'm not totally sure.

Someone who knows it can help us?

Is it Bill Bruford drumming or someone else?

  • thinking that it is Bruford because Hackett was still in the band....

  • Yeah, now I remember..

    It's "seconds out" isn't it?

  • it looks like the lineup short before Steve left the band. that means Chester drums. I think Bill was only for a few shows hired till they found someone with whom Phil felt comfortable..but I don't know exactly

  • It pisses me off that you rarely see Steve Hackett playing his soaring lead work especially on Carpet Crawlers. It was his guitar sound that made me listen to Genesis in the first place.

  • classic music..big fan of the gabriel and collins genesis.even ray wilson had his moments.suck on that nerds

  • he played with zappa, u fools

  • what about chester??

    cmon

  • I have to agree with what Peter Gabriel said, Phil might sing these songs better, but not quite like how peter did.

  • Its true. I think that Peter help Genesis to be notice mostly because of Peter's showman habilites, and Phil pushed Genesis to a more open public. Both do a great work, like depeche mode with David Gaham and Martin Gore they sound the same.

  • Does anybody else ever "trip" on how Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel both had that high pitched, hissy, sound in their voice. They were very similar sounding in alot of ways (Big fan here, so don't insult me, I know my old and new Genesis). They really have a similar sound. Maybe it's an English thang...

  • Yes they did. The timbre in their voices are similar. That's why Phil being the singer worked.

  • people love familiarity

  • I hate how steve is rarely shown.

  • Yeah ! I quite agree with you, perhaps Tony told the film crew not to shoot Steve, HA HA HA, I'm just kidding, cheers !

  • for some reason it seems the tempo (live) was

never the same as when gabriel sang it live???

  • (Based upon my hearing this version here and the SO version) I would agree with you - the live version tempo seems faster...personally, I prefer a slower tempo - faster versions may leave less "breathing room" for a song

  • ohhh damn. My bad. Well, same applies because I love them both :P

  • ahhhh peter gabriel was such a hippie caveman! hahahaa I love him :D <3

  • sorry friend, that is Phil Collins singing

  • what was with the staticky thing

  • Excellent! This one goes into the favorites.

These (along with dance on a volcano) were really the ones I missed the most on the TIOA tour.

  • Genesis is Peter Gabriel...

  • Looks like Phil was cultivating too much facial furniture so God took it all away from him prematurely

  • lol looks like it was already going away from the top so Phil just overcompensated by growing a whole bushel on the bottom

  • what a man!!!!!!! whooooooohooooooooooooo

  • Ah... When Phil Collins had hair...

    Hehe

  • Can't wait for your nobody ass to age. WTF does that have to do with anything?

  • why are bands afraid to do this anymore? Sad

  • what do you mean? Genesis toured just last year...

  • go to college town Esp. Austin. You can still catch bands that still lke altering reality.

  • One super great band, one super great C.D.

  • Awesome!

  • chester = tastefull

  • And what, pray tell, does Steve Hackett have against the Dallas Cowboys? Does this have anything to do with Gabriel's departure?

  • i saw a musical box concert at the bell center a few years ago in montreal..they where right on!!! didnt miss a note!!!

  • My favorite Genesis song. Reminds of a time in my life when my only worries were grades, girls and beer.

  • You mean there's more to worry about than that?

  • pot. at some point pot comes in the equation too.

  • Phil Collins sounds exactly like Peter Gabriel on 'The Musical Box'. Great performance!

  • Nice song! That time phil knew to use the sticks pretty good.

  • where is peter gabriel ?? :(
