  • They just changed "I ran out of spells" to "I ran out of healing surges."

  • It is amusing, in hindsight... how little of the stuff these guys promised for 4e, actually happened... pfft.

  • @GMCiaramella 11 months after this convention, they announce gleemax is being shut down to focus on their "digital content" of D and D insider, a good portion of IT having not even materialized to vapor-ware level, 4 years after the fact.

I'm not sure what's worse. Having things declared and then recended upon, or the fact that what they had to retract was in some part thanks to sticking with a -paid- service. These books are $25 and up a piece.

They just /had/ to dump open content for paid?

  • I have never played other DnD editions, and I now play the 4th edition, you dont need a laptop to play it ,just the books, all tht DnD Insider shit that they keep saying is not necessary, only of course If you lack of imagination or If you are so lazy to use a pencil,THEN YOU NEED DnD INSIDER,OTHERWHISE NOT.I like this game, every little bit,DnD is what you make, because remember what the books say,the rules are "just a guide"

  • 4th edition sucks bad. I used to play 3.0 then they came out with 3.5 so I adapted. Then 4th which I found out is crap. That's when I discovered Hero System. The best Role playing game ever made in my opinion. Check it out don't waste your time with Dnd. Trust me it's worth it.

  • @WilliamLanceHancock

...why was this comment hidden as spam? I disagree with him about DnD sucking (Well...3.5 at least. 4e is a disgrace to the name), but he didn't say anything abusive to anyone, just said that he doesn't like 4e. Rent a clue, people.

  • 4th edition rules!

  • @synjakbeta I like it also. So many complain about it. They are the same that will complain about 5th Ed.

  • @chaksheba

exactly, I enjoy both 3rd and 4th editions, the thing is that a lot of people just don't like change.

  • Man...i've had more excitement at a All Hands meeting at my corporate job. Not dissing the game...but these guys suck....

  • I've played both 3.5 and 4.0 with a group of friends, and by far, we've enjoyed version 4 more. This is due to the fact that it's sooo much easier to go through combat and character creation/levelling.

Half of the character sheet looked like there was some secret key behind it, and when you're trying to teach the game to a group of young adults, you don't want complicated stat blocks and obscure rules hidden throughout the PH, you want stream-lined play that you can access easily.

  • Combat is more difficult now, in the sense that enemies have more AC and health than before.

This leads to encounters being more memorable, and you wont find your group blowing their way through the adventure in a single session, and asking after a dozen sessions: so, whats there left that can still kill me?

  • That's the great thing - tactics have come into play, instead of combat being dominated by pimped-out chars. So much is made of positioning and buffs to overcome the high monster defences and HP, now.

  • @KingElector

I managed to DM 3.5 just fine for a group of kids aged 9-11. If the Dungeon Master knows the rules it's really easy to keep the rest flowing quite nicely.

  • By making "the sweet spot level 1-30" ... they forget to mention that 90% of the time all characters will be doing 1d6+ a certain ability modifier damage per round.

Each battle will have a couple 1/day or 1/encounter powers... then just spamming your 1d6+X spell :(

  • So wrong. Have you even looked at 4e?

Yes, in 4e after your Wizard uses his Daily and Encounter powers he is left to the at-will powers. As opposed to 3.5 where after the Wizard is out of spells he runs and camps to regain his spells.

But, in 4e the non-casting classes actually have contributing Daily and Encounter abilities also And just like the casting classes, once those abilities are expended those characters have to use their daily abilities.

But not a simple D6+ability mod.

  • If I'm wrong, then how much damage could a person expect to get out of their at will powers? At level 1 vs. 20 vs. 30?

Cuz, yea, I've read it, and most of the at wills say something like "1d6+ability mod, at level 21 improves to 2d6+ability mod"

... a few are d8's instead of d6's. But all that does is make it so that after 6 rounds tops, non-casters similarly drop to basically nothing.

  • judging from all of the negative comments surrounding the 4th edition D&D, you all make it sound like it will make LEARNING the game easier (good for someone like me)

  • From what little 4.0 I've played... it's comparable to a mac computer. Very simple, you don't have to think, you just sit back, and you're sure it's doing the right thing.

3.5 was definitely more complicated... but that simply meant you had SO much more options.

  • @dasgregorian

    Exactly right.

  • Wait.. you TELL me what to do... um, why do I need that? What is the point of me playing my character with you TELLING me what to do... I know what my character's strengths are relative to how I build it and what class I play, wtf.

  • Most products these days are brought out simply to drive revenue. See Windows Vista.

  • You know honestly i have tried to think that people were trying to do the best they can but lately... I don't know, times have really changed in that indeed it is the drive to make revenues. Dnd, windows vista, and another good example is movies. Lucas and spielberg put out shitty movies and make sequels to classics because they know it will anticipate people to see what has been done to their beloved classics. Everyone thinks they suck but everyone still goes to see them because of the NAME!

  • no i just felt like writing random things

  • you high boy ???

  • easy my ass i cant even find how to attack those books are not laid out good at all

  • the most fun thing about DMing is that you are in control!knowing the rules is a basic nessesity!

one of the best things is missing: hand drawn pictures

  • 4.0 monsters stink i was in an areana with a lvl 3 elven ranger and i brought a lvl 10 dragonborn gladiator to 8 hp even though it used its healing surge

  • I agree my party of 2 players can take down monsters that are like 8 lvls higher - it sucks

  • For someone to is just now becoming interested in D&D, I don't know what previous editions brought to the table, nor do I have a decade or two of experience in playing. So, those who are griping about the 4th edition make me wonder what they expect of the game. I have read through the player's handbook and I think that it presents opportunity for fun and creative gameplay. If I read through previous editions maybe I could sympathize with grumblers, but as it stands 4th looks good to me.

  • I started with 3.5 in 2004, the problem more experienced players as well as myself have is that v3.0 came out in 2000 (2nd edition was out for 15yrs), in 2003 v3.5 came out which was made to improve and correct what was wrong with 3.0. After only 8 years roughly, 4th edition comes out, so anyone who bought the others must now buy a completely new system (4th edition is not backwards compatible). Also 4th edition is a really dummed down version of v3.5 leaning heavily towards World of Warcraft.

  • They have no clue about gaming.....

They brang out the third trash now they offer us more trash.

  • Why the hell didn't they license the diablo engine to run their game, it looks way fucking better then this shit.

  • You are supposed to be a huge rules expert if you are the dm... wtf all I hear is that they are making dnd for fucking retards

  • The original game was never created with the intention that anyone had to become an overly-complex rules expert. Like the original DnD, 4th edition's far more about tactics than from-the-books knowledge. It's far simpler and balanced, encouraging players to use tactics rather than memorizing penalties and bonuses scattered across hundreds of pages. Whether or not the DM is an expert at the old extreme-numbers-rules, his players still spend countless minutes making numerical decisions rather...

  • than playing the game. Enjoyed 3.5 and coolbeans to anyone who plays any edition of DnD, but if you're playing a game because you enjoy an overly-complex set of rules, and unbalanced game, spending half of a 3-4 hour gaming session searching for and re-reading rules, and concentrating more on numerics than what the game was intended target (roleplaying and tactics), you're a retard for playing DnD and assuming that "only those oh so smart people" who study every ridiculously insignificant or...

  • outrageously extreme bonus or penalty should be able to experience and enjoy DnD, DM-ing or playing. Whether or not any DnD veterans like the new edition, they can appreciate the devs opening up the DnD world to the so called "retarded", less book-bound players and embracing the real reason the game was created in the first place, retard.

  • It's one thing to enjoy something new, it's another thing entirely something else when that new thing is extremely dummed down of a previous version, imagine playing Diablo I,II and finally getting a chance at Diablo III only to find it plays similar to Diablo II but removes 85-90% of the hack & slash that made Diablo what it is. 4th edition did this to the role-playing aspect by making everyone have a role that they could not choose. Some people enjoy playing against type (ex: Dwarven Sorcerer)

  • All I can say is that I'm LOVING 4e and the players in my campaign are also loving it.

  • Personally I don't think that this presentation is enough to condemn 4E. I'm gonna have to dive into it a little to see if it is worth it for me.

  • particularly for me, I dont have quite time to play the game, so 4E becomes simpler, and less complex it's a give for me and my busy friends to keep up playing DnD like old days :)

  • both of them were very awkward, like they expected the crowd to lynch them at any moment and wanted to leave pronto.

  • I agree lol

  • I don't know you...but I love the 4E, is more simple, less complex, the game runs more smoothly...Is kinda stupid to play a session and halt for a book reference every now and then! don't wanna buy those books?? ebooks for you!! try it!

  • True, they made the game a lot simpler, and it's easy to pick up. It's a fun game on it's own, however, it doesn't feel like D&D. It feels more like a MMO played on paper.

  • blah blah evrybody hates it cus its new and differnt ,just like vista you guys hate change call the whah bulance!! i remember when windows xp came out evrybody hated it now evrybody hates vista . i think its the same thing with d&d lol...

  • The bald guy is so awkward lol.

  • I'm holding judgement till I see it..

  • IT'S A PIECE OF DOGSHIT

  • Seriously. I think 3.5 is 100% better. Because of it's complexity. With the 4th edition everybody can be DM. :/ For sure the example of grappling a troll is true. But normally a DM can refuse this. He may refuse. Anyway 4E sucks...

  • I agree, it's a horribly bad presentation :P

  • They should have came more prepared, they're constantly trying to pass the baton to the other person and pause constantly.

  • 4th Sucks! i beta tested it and it sucks if you are used to 3.0 and 3.5 forget about it being easier to understand.

  • These guy's really suck.. couldn't they get non-morons to do the show?

  • Sounds like they're putting training wheels on the game.

If you can read and have at least some brainpower, you shouldn't have any problems with 3.0/3.5

I just don't know what all the fuss is about.

  • 4E is crap.

  • I love that instead of all the bickering they DID deliver on all of those promises!

  • Gygax wouldn't have approved of this...this role playing game is a game of the imagination and making it online was the biggest mistake WOTC could have made

  • amazing! W.o.W. on paper very nice... please give yourselves fire... -__-

  • They saw the book title "D&D for Dummies" and thought they struck gold

  • wow, I'm actually beginning to get excited about 4th edition

it sounds so much more usable,... I just regret spending so much damn money on 3.5 ed

  • hahaha. lol. rotflmao. i do feel your pain. i realy do. i thought the exact same thing

  • I love the fourth edition so far.

  • PDFs up on Pirate Bay since a few days ago.

  • Dammit... Why do they still call it a roleplaying game? I remember having a lot of fun playing a low hit point wizard who ran from just about everything. The best characters you can make are ones you and your DM make up together. I am so depressed about this

  • OMG i''m so excited.

  • I think the new rules will speed up the game. I remember that back in the 90's the gem was a LITTLE slow. it was fun though. But I heard that the rules have changed for the better. it's quicker and no more THAC0. Hurray!!!!

  • there hasn't been THAC0 for YEARS.

  • Most likely I will just purchase the Dungeon Masters Guide and use its random event tables and possibly item creation ideas, but relate them back to 3.5. I almost never use books except for their tables, feats, classes, or items. I never take the whole book and implement it all, because I write my own campaigns. I prefer letting the individual characters decide how much to do. Much of the D&D games will probably shift over to Darkfall MMORPG, as its awesome.

  • isn't grapple already incorporated in 3.5? Besides, who cares if they fixed one little skill that we never use? still, everything else seems awesome and i've preordered

  • i use grapple quite alot, helps infomation gathering, capturing etc.

  • I think they ripped the heart out of the game. Who cares about saving the village? As long as I level up...

  • BOOOOOOOOO! Gygax is rolling in his grave...slaughterers!

  • You don't honestly need much to play DnD. Me and my buddies spent our early years playing a heavily kitbashed version of DnD that utilized a 2.0 players guide and three dice. You make it up as you go along, play around with the numbers, and let the jokes carry the sessions. Most of our fun came from the stories, as does any session. You don't need a comnputer to play DnD any more than you need a Draconomicon to play DnD. That said, if you're not poor (like me), it might be worth looking into.

  • Hearing them talk, you could just change a few words, and they could be giving a report to the shareholders about how much money they're going to make.

    KEYWORDS: "product" & "subscription"

  • You ain't kidding! "Rewards for playing D&D, whenever, and wherever" uh oh.

I love how they say "express yourself in ways never able to before." I am on the WOTC forum, and tell them what I think, and have told them how much I dislike what they are doing with 4th edition.

  • can ppl play this online?

  • Who's the wanker on the left? Is he an employer? He acts like your typical wanker employer.

  • I, personally, can't wait! I love D&D... heh heh heh...

  • Okay, so first I buy the books for 40-50 bucks apiece (prob more with 4th edition) - then I pay more money for the privelage of playing the game - seems like they want to control the game, control the outside content (keep other people from making money off their ideas lol) - and suck us dry of our money!

  • Is Hasbro owned by an H.M.O.?

  • 1. more money to WotC...

    2. more money to WotC...

    3. more fun for us...

    4. more money to WotC...

  • well, i hope for the best. It looks like they are really doing the right things to build a sustainable customer base with online tools and constant online updates. That is really great news.

  • At least they're more charismatic than most of our presidential cantidates! HEYOO!

  • Am I the only one that never really had a problem with the grapple rules?

  • Grapple fucking rocked when you go to the Halfling burrow and start wrestling them.

  • I thought the grapple rules were fine... especially with a monk... flurry of grapples... so cool.

  • The only problem with grappling was that so few people bothered reading the rules on it. So player says "I wanna hold the monster to the ground!" and then the DM, who has no idea how it's done, has to search the books to find out how it's done.

  • Worst presentation i swear to god. These fuckin guys dont know how to speak in public

  • The guy with the blue shirt sounds really nervous. I hate speaking in public myself so I know how he feels.

  • sounds nervous? he looks nervous, check out his feet his doing a fucking riverdance in slow motion.

  • Its posts like yours that make reading posts on YouTube worth it hahahah I cant stop laughing hahahha lol

  • Its posts like yours that make reading posts on YouTube worth it hahahah I cant stop laughing hahahha lol

  • well how would you have unveiled a new version of a major gaming franchise?

  • Man I was smiling through this whole thing, everything I was worried about was touched on. Man i'm a nerd ={

  • i still have my copy of the dungeon master's guide, the monster manual, the player's guide, and deities and demigods. and it doesn't charge me anything per month.

these two hosers can suck it.

  • worst presentation ever

  • I always play as the DM and am so sick of having to flip through all 300 or so pages of the rulebook to look up tiny little things, so I am really pyched about the DM's job being made easier.

  • I play DnD as DM for 2 years and 4 years as player. What I will do is adapt a few rules from the 4th edition (grapple for example). I already use rules from earlier editions, so as long there in no problem why not? I suggest to all of u to try it out. if it doesn'y towk out, what the hell return to 3.5. whatever is fun for u. after all the Basic rule is "Let's have Fun"

  • i will get it for the defined roles

  • D&D is what you make it. It's about having fun and using your imagination and creativity to enjoy going on an adventure in your mind. The enjoyment of playing a character that can cast magic or can swing a sword and go up against a creature that would, in reality, destroy you in a second, is awesome. Real D&D isn't about rules. It's about fantasy, imagination, and fun.

  • Doesn't seem that special to me... seems like it's more suited for kick-in-the-door type campaigns, and not really that much to what we've come to think of D&D.

  • Not a very good presentation. I feel that some things that were stated as "new" already exist in version (3.5)....

  • lhghhh

  • Informative, but the guy in blue does not seem confident in this product. Or he isn't familiar with what he is presenting. Oh, and AD&D v2 is the Way... Gygax Lives!

  • I think his issue is that too much of his presentation was dependent on audience response. Which is a mistake. If you notice everytime he says something loud he pauses, and then when no one reacts he gets nervous. :p

    Poor guy.

  • all those geeks have bad social skills, j/k!

  • so u have to camp... big damn deal, thats when i go pee usually

  • DAMN! Subscription.. that just hurts..

  • There aint no "supposed to"s in an RPG...

  • AHHH - thats it - only mentioned once - what we've been waiting for - at 7:48 - "Imagine a SUBSCRIPTION based website"

  • It is true, the followers of Thay have taken over Dungeons and dragons

  • so do you have to have a computer at the table with you in order to play?

  • hey i have 3.5 but still play advanced DnD and its all fun why do they keep adding. and we use a computer in our gaming its a fast way to make character sheets quick and use paint to make maps. the gaming world is as changeable as the DM can make it i dont see how an online world would make it more changable

  • Money.

  • What they are talking about, with encounter design and new challenges, is just good Dming! Now they wanna spell it all out?

  • I wonder if people prophesized the death of D&D the same way when second edition was announced?

    My guess: Probably.

  • Some did, yes. Gygax being forced out of TSR was a real shock to us all. My concern with 4.0 is that I don't want to see D&D dumbed down until it's just another version of the old HeroQuest board game.

  • Chris Perkins (the bald guy) tries way too hard.

  • Every time you hear "interesting" or "options" take a shot.

  • the 3.5 manuals looked awesome the new ones look worse than the ones 30 years ago... and why did they change the style that the dungeons and dragons words were written on the books? they look worse but i hope the game at least plays better

  • I really don't like the whole online thing. D&D is a pen & paper game. Tools mankind has had around for thousands of years. You'd lose a lot of atmosphere if you sit around your gaming table with a bunch of laptops. And if you have those, you might as well just throw a LAN party.

  • Actually, online gaming is pretty good. If you do a game over AIM or some type of specific gaming app, not only do you probably do more but you never have to leave your house ;). Kidding. Also, as with Play by Post games on forum, its a lot easier to get into roleplaying, and its also great to find some more people who love to play D&D beyond those people you already know. Most sites have wonderful communities, and you can teach or learn new roleplaying systems (I learned Paranoia online).

  • They are still thinking of D&D as a glorified D&D Minis wargame. If they wanted to make the game smoother, or move in a new direction, rules-lite, then they should have made it more like White Wolf's Storyteller games.

  • Also, if all you're doing is healing when you're a cleric, you shouldn't play a cleric. They can do SOOO much more than heal. That's just a bonus. They're also pretty good at fighting. I don't like this. But, I'll give it a chance.

  • I totally agree. Clerics also provide excellent roleplaying opportunities. They also have a ton of nifty spells, the only niftier choice being bards, but some of those are just too weird to expect every session. Oh, and who can forget the badass cleric shining with Divine Favor and dual-wielding holy and unholy maces?

  • This is going to be lame! That's what I think. 3.5 is just fine. More rules is good. It allows for more options. This "simplified" version is to add to there customer base, so they can become richer. There are more stupid ppl than intelligent ppl. Bigger consumer base.

  • Corruption and comercialization have entered D&D. At least the REAL books will get cheaper because of all the dumb SHITS buying the new fucktard garbage.

  • No no no NO!!!

Third edition is the last good edition!

    They are KILLING D&D!!!

    Gygax, save us!

  • Pfft, any respectable D&D player knows how to grapple...

  • No kidding!

  • Yeah, we don't need this patetic attempt to make Hasbro richer!

  • 4.0 only exists because of marketing. Its WoTC's way of trying to make d20 "upgradable," and "subscribable" as online RPGs have done.

  • my DM's biggest problem is making the NPC/PC Monster races cohesive. IE having a given CR for a monster but his overall class and race levels don't equal out. He's thrown half dragon goblins at us that have levels in Warlock that can house, but theres a 'Fluffy' (undead monster made of bodies) that we can drop in less than 3 rounds in our sleep I'll dislike the whole Crit thing with breath weapons and all. Rolling 20's bad enough when the DM's dice love him

  • Well if you are going to do 4.0, stop buying 3.5 products and dump your old gear asap. If you are sticking with 3.5, buy it up now, cos you are going to have a lot of freed up cash next year, starting in May, I believe. ;)

  • Gleemax is an attempt to take away from communities that have existed for years so WotC can control where people get their info (see the end of DUNGEON and DRAGON magazines, leading to WoTC controlling content while preventing other companies from advertising). This is a common tactic with MMORPGs, which Blizzard (WoW), SOE (EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, SWG), and Turbine (AC, DDO, LotRO) all use in order to control the game community and devalue the community contributions.

  • They're using grapple as a straw man argument for changing the rules. For the majority of rules in 3.5 they are understood and used without issue by most players.

  • Defining class roles to only four concepts will only serve to water down the classes and to grow beyond those classes you will eventually have to divert from such a concept or keep a game that will eventually become overly repetitive from one character type to another.

Look at EQ2, which tried this (fighter, mage, scout, priest archetypes) and gave up on it because it wasn't possible to maintain due to the inability to expand the classes in an enjoyable and wanted manner.

  • You can dump them. Wizards has yet to show any concern for their customers, beyond cutting their purses, and using words like "streamlining" because "simplified" might have negative connotations and be more correct.

  • hmm pisses me off... sounds like a friggin mmo... i can't stand mmo.. i don't want unlockable stuff... and roles hell my groups never follow roles

  • Anyone know if my 3.5 books are going to be use able with 4.0? Or should I dump my books on ebay now and not buy another till 4.0?

  • As my group roleplays and not rollplays, I'm not worried. As always, will be looking forward to the new artwork!

  • between the weapons artwork on the d&d insider site and this video, it seems like they are trying to make dnd play like an mmorpg at the dinner table. maybe its too early to pass that judgement, but if thats the case i'm going to pass. i really hope wotc/hasbro isnt trying to use the dnd brand to get a little piece of the massive WoW pie.

  • That is absolutely correct. D&D v4 will be an MMORPG, which is funny since MMORPGs built their systems based on old D&D rules and concepts. Heck, Ken Troop of Turbine is part of the team, so what do you expect?

Personally, not happy at all with what I see so far.

  • Bah, there is nothing they can do to fix d20, it's broken to the core. It does sound better though.

  • So basically what they are saying is; We made it Fast, Furious, Fun! Now where have I heard that before?

  • what are these rewards he keeps talking about...like actual physcial rewards or emotinal rewards?(IE: yea, I killed the <monster> and saved the group... I'm the man)

  • exactly what I thought. Essentially a repackage with computer programs (programs that already exist) to assist the DM.

  • Well look at v3.5, It was just 3.0 with one or two changes

  • finally a legal way yo have AD&D books on my computer

  • Oi, this doesn't sound so gooooood...

  • but...but..but what about past level 30, lol!

  • yah lol

  • The forgotten video! For some reason this wasn't linked to from the WotC page.
