I am an Ohio State alumnus, but I love college football as a whole for its traditions, color, school spirit, and pageantry. I love TBDBITL of course, but I also like seeing and hearing other college bands especially in their own stadiums during road games. One of my favorite road trips was to MSU a few Octobers ago. What a beautiful setting for college football, and the MSU band was (is) great. There's nothing like college football.
@kqr573v2 I agree with you, I am a Michigan alumni and I have to say its great to see the traditions of other schools to see what is special to them. Like Ohio State's "script Ohio" its really cool to see live.
@treefalse Yes, except the Hockey Cheer is no longer done because the student section would alter the cheer to be profane so the Athletic Department told the band to strike the song.
I believe those in the marching band community say that Michigan State and Ohio State have the two best marching bands in the nation. Can anyone confirm this?
i can confirm that MSU beat UofM. Oh whats that? 2 years in a row? Ok. And i know what you're thinking..."It's only 2 years, UofM still leads the rivalry" But then again old records dont really mean shit for the present. It's gonna be 3 in a row soon enough. Go green. nuff said.
@balmdeezy I'd have to say that the U of M band is one of the best too. The M Fanfare is guaranteed to bring chills, and teeth grinding to any State or OU fan. :) Also, U of M's drum major does the back bend without the hat :)
U of M's band blew us off the field the first time I saw them. That was Sept 1950 and we had come to perform at the game (all 80 of us) They greeted us by playing "The Farmer in the Dell". Nice touch. Today's SMB can compete with any band in the US. By the way, MSC beat UM that day - and the next three years too!
There are many classes of marching band. Aside from their traditional uniforms, the Marching 110 from Ohio are pretty contemporary and innovative, whereas Southern University is one of the best historically black bands, who are about as flashy as they come.
But when it comes to traditional, ROTC-born, high-stepping (Big Ten) bands, MSU and OSU stand alone, top-tier.
It's kind of weird, U of M has the better fight song... but MSU has the better marching band. Actually MSU fight song sounds awesome... but those lyrics...
"The Victors is the greatest Fight Song in the country." Wavolax, to say what you said, you either have to be an overzealous fan, or an extremely stupid person. No educated person can argue against OSU having the best in the Big 10. Second in my mind is either UM or MSU in no particular order. I'm a student at MSU and i think that UM has one of the best pre-game routine in the country, (outside from OSU script OHIO). Plus, UM's entrance is better.
I know you go to games to watch the game, but other than winning this is my favorite parts of them every season. The band is AMAZING. The Halloween (Thriller) Halftime show they put on this past year was FAAAABULOUS.
That limp happens to be one of the oldest and most recognized marching band entrances in the country. Not to mention the fact that not everyone can do it. trust me it's not as easy as we make it look. It puts the entire big ten to shame with the possible exception of OSU.
You are seriously stupid. The kickstep entrance is ridiculously cool and difficult. I am a drum major at a high school and I went to a DM camp at MSU. Just for shits n giggles they showed us the entrance. fabfiver5, go die.
This band has the best sound in the Big Ten and they actually memorize new music each week! These musicians have to have some of the best musical control around to produce such a high quality level of tone while marching. Great Job Spartans!
Give it a rest. When people talk about the Big 10 marching bands they talk about MSU, Ohio State, and maybe UM. Penn State's "blue band" is virtually obscure and not worth mentioning. Nobody's even really heard of them outside of Penn States' own fan base.
The Best Part of Growing Up in The late 60's & early 70's is That ABC Sports Understood That The BAND Was An important Part Of The College Football Experience! The Announcers Would Step aside Long enough For The Viewers At Home to Hear Atleast one Song From Each Band.

Not even the SMB claims to be better than TBDBITL. Nor does TBDBITL claim to be better than the SMB. They're pretty even, overall.

Do they have the halftime show from I think 1999 when they did the year 2000 bug routine? That was awesome. I was there for all of those games!!

Fun fact: MSU beat Michigan 26-24 on the date this was recorded. Mention the 2001 MSU game to any UM fan for an explosive reaction.
