Love on a Farmboy's Wages has to be one of the most beautiful acoustic songs of all time! I have written a detailed post on my blog praising the acoustic genius of XTC, but I can't post the link here. I hope some one finds it!
@gerretl When I got married in 1986 I wanted "Earn Enough For Us" as my wedding song, but my fiance, now ex-wife (I should have known then), said it wasn't a fitting song for a wedding ... I was tempted to get married a second time just to use the song. Andy Partridge is a superb song writer ... hope you're still married ...
Seems to be no mention in the recent book on folk rock, "Electric Eden"and barely a mention in the book "Rip it up and Start again" on New Wave.. seems XTC`s stunning inventiveness still goes unrecognised. A shame.
There's a music tradition of folk music merging with rock/pop music (Horslips, Lindisfarne for examples) which tends to go from folk towards rock/pop. What I like about xtc is that they did it the other way around. They started doing the pop thing and worked backwards (and backwards doesnt mean a regression) to a rural, acoustic, pastoral sound which evokes, for me, the sound of middle England. Bless them
July 6 1999 Zooming across the countryside to see my dad I hadn't seen in over a decade listening to Xtc full blast. Perfect day. It was the last time I saw him. This song made me want to see him. I'm so glad I did. Thanks.
XTC- what a great sound. Saw them live a couple of times before they stopped touring. Hairs on back of neck stood up for them - always a good test. Some underated, classic, amazing sounds and lyrics along with some not so good stuff (Fair to say?) I think they are were they would want to be

It's one of those songs that have a real sense of place. I've driven up and down the A419 east of Swindon more times than I care to remember and this is the music I'd choose for the journey - much as I'd want Madness for driving through north London; it just fits the landscape it comes from so well.

@SpankinElroy That's quite the stretch referring to them as "genius", especially since the band produced only a handful of listen worthy songs written by one guy, Colin Moulding.

Andy Partridge writes great songs, and most of XTC's songs. I'd say about 75%.
But Moulding Writes better songs. Not all the time. About 60%-70% of his songs are crap. Experimental failures. But When he puts out a good song. @hiyapoeple1 yeah me too :) and you probably know more xtc than i do, at the moment i know mostly black sea and before. i love that we could have completely different tastes in music and still love xtc
@MusicJew158 Ah - yearning for the mother country eh? ;-) Seriously though, great you appreciate XTC's music - they're so different from most other bands that it's not surprising they connect where others don't
I remember playing this a lot on university radio at Lancaster - very nice gatefold sleeve in the form of a wallet. I still have it somewhere. Great track by a much under-rated band.

@stargate669 :-))))) I love this tune. GOT hooked on this sweet song. Seems you shared this song with me months ago. A reply on my comment on one of XTC vids brought me back here with very many warm beautiful memories. You have changed, kind being. :-)Yep you have. <3 Thanks for bringing XTC into my life. I Love music. ;)
Depends. If you can get XTC to do the music for free, I might consider it. Its in Tuscany, and the budget is sooo stretched, I can't even cover expenses.

Why is Mummer reviewed so mediocre compared to thier other albums? This song is certainly pretty and definitley went against the grain the time it was released :)
Hey Saguaroboy you wern't the only arizonan to enjoy XTC, I had a friend in the military who broght over the most neglected music in the world. And XTC had the most influencing effect in my life. Espicially in the deserts of az in the late sevnties. To the submiter of this video...Where did you find this gem?
To put it mildly, Andy did not write lyrics. He wrote poetry you could put to music. With the exception of the albums with Barry Andrews on them, every one of them is a fucking gem. It just goes to show you that true artistry is buried while Britney Spears and her ilk enjoy riches beyond belief.

There !
Jeez YouTube, I reply to specific post cuz that's where it should GO !
ya' know . . . Having just read thru most of the collected comments here, I certainly agree that Mummer is wondrous, but "pastoral" ? Altho' Andy helps w/ that notion, are "Alchemy","Great Fire","Elements","Beating Hearts","Wonderland" or "Funk Pop" really so dang pastoral ?? Andy speaks of "painting w/ colors" around "Drums&Wires" I believe, but here's where texture truly came in. B-sides included, this is where my love for them solidified & matured. No one evolved like xTc, except Fabs !
Agreed. Mummer is almost pastoral but mostly just slight more use of acoustic guitars (that's all). "Wonderland" is actually pastoral but limited use of acoustic instrumentation. Hey, it's more or less just a TAG placed upon this LP by Andy and it stuck. That's all.
I had the pleasure of seeing XTC on a bill with The Police back in the early eighties in Detroit,MI at a venue called Clutch Cargo... It was great... I still have my ticket stub to this day...
Gregory and Partridge together put most flash guitarists to shame. Superbly understated stuff . Every album takes a new tack yet stands the test of time... Throw in Colin Moulding (as melodic and inventive as Squire or McCartney) and they are the Fab Three...ridiculously overlooked.
Even when I hardly knew who xtc was I heard this song as a high school kid in 83 who joined the local university radio station at 15 and I had access to all the new college radio albums and I remember loving this song and the guy ran the station who really liked xtc told me he thought this was the beginning of the end for the band because it sounded too mccartney like and too cute! It's still great anyway!
One of my favorites... Rag & Bone Buffet (leftovers & Bsides). Listen to Mermaid Smiles, Extrovert, and then everything else. When I bought it, it gave a glimpse of XTC before media was readily available (now thanks to internet).
I have watched this video many times and finally joined you tube. Been a fan since the band started on the scene in the very late 70s. I own all the old 45s lps and videos. My favorite band and thi ssong is one of my favs.
I, too, truly fell in love with xtc with this song. I have lived my whole life in the giant concrete city of Phoenix, Arizona yet have always worked in a nursery or farm of sorts- Sometimes in a truly pastoral corner of the metropolis. This song has kept me proud and laid for 20+ years!
This was when I fell in love with Andy Partridge. Such a lovely song. Anyone notice the bucolic, lush nature of many of XTC's songs/ EX: Harvest Festival, Ballet for a Rainy Day...the song writing-right up there with Difford and Tilbrook, the Finn Brothers and dare I say McCartney and Lennon such terrific storytelling. So glad Andy is still producing art. Sad they didn't tour more - makes me feel like I have to grasp hard like a treasure anything that comes out
It's a great song. Wonderful inventive guitar playing and the band work great together. If they got in a great singer the band dynamics always change trust me! I think these guys should give classes on how to write great songs!
does anyone have the "on wxrt" (Chicago radio) volume 1, with the LOAFBW - Senses Working OT - Grass medley? It is priceless!

Apple Venus & Wasp Star are perfect for a Sunday Drive.

Apple Venus is and always has been my favorite...I could listen to "Easter Theater" and "Greenman" over and over and over...

Absolutely. Its not even their best stuff, in my opinion, but it was so addictive when I first got it.

oui c'est vrai de vrai; ce disque est un chef-d'oeuvre absolu! Mais que deviens XTC aujourd'hui???
jahpinpin 3 years ago
Agreed and it really seems to compliment "Skylarking".

They aren't "good".
THEY'RE ESSENTIAL!

Why is Mummer reviewed so mediocre compared to thier other albums? This song is certainly pretty and definitley went against the grain the time it was released :)

I love this song so much :)

Andy Partridge is amazing. His guitar solo on That´s Really super Supergirl is just wonderful.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that was David Gregory doing that solo.

Great effin song, isn't it? Andy Partridge = musical genius. Third only to The Beatles and Queen.

To put it mildly, Andy did not write lyrics. He wrote poetry you could put to music. With the exception of the albums with Barry Andrews on them, every one of them is a fucking gem. It just goes to show you that true artistry is buried while Britney Spears and her ilk enjoy riches beyond belief.

ya' know . .
DavidMRoberts 3 years ago
You wrote: No one evolved like xTc, except Fabs
You're so right.
crimsonkng 3 years ago
Agreed. Mummer is almost pastoral but mostly just slight more use of acoustic guitars (that's all). "Wonderland" is actually pastoral but limited use of acoustic instrumentation. Hey, it's more or less just a TAG placed upon this LP by Andy and it stuck. That's all.
monkeytrousers 3 years ago
Hey, If one calls "use of acoustic guitars" pastoral ( not that WE did ), then English Settlement is downright Amish !
I suspect Andy's perspective was underlined somewhat by the "sudden" shift to home-life, as this is the 1st album post "fleeing the tour circus".

Andy is so cute. I def do him.

I had the pleasure of seeing XTC on a bill with The Police back in the early eighties in Detroit,MI at a venue called Clutch Cargo... It was great... I still have my ticket stub to this day...

That concert rolled through my hometown of Winnipeg but I didn't know either band the way I do now. I still kick myself for what I missed out on.

Pretty good, not my favorite XTC song but definitely a good song.

The great thing about XTC was their versatility and never afraid to try something different. Often it worked brilliantly as it does here.

I LOVE this song- I even remember the first time I heard it, (when school age) waking up to it playing at 7am on The Mike Reid Show, Radio 1!!!

Great song from one of the great albums ever. Too bad there's not a Ladybird video! Saw Trashcan Sinatras cover this once and it was genious as well.

Fantastic song from a magnificent wordsmith, aka Andy Partridge.
Many thanks for this absolute treasure !!!

I, too, truly fell in love with xtc with this song. I have lived my whole life in the giant concrete city of Phoenix, Arizona yet have always worked in a nursery or farm of sorts- Sometimes in a truly pastoral corner of the metropolis. This song has kept me proud and laid for 20+ years!

ah, the days when there actually were any farm boys... is that only 30 years ago?
these days we're lucky there are even any farms left
pastoral hogwash? still strangely resonant.
