    What a powerful perfect speech. No POTUS since has come close to words like that. I don' t think they ever will again.

  • This is a truly great speech by a truly great man, the best US President I have or will see in my lifetime. He reassures the children, which no other President would have done and the last line "...slipped the bouds of earth to touch the face of God" puts a lump in my throat every time. He hit the right note exactly every time. But he didn't just do great speeches - he single-handedly won the Cold War for the West and saved 70 lives when a lifeguard.   • This video is so sad. I am still in shock. Believe it or not, my mother felt something bad was going to happen and didn't go to work for the first time in years. Ronald Regan was amazing, he really showed sincere. I have great respect for him.

  • Very nicely done Speechprofessor. I watched the President deliver this speech live the day it happened. It moved me then, and did so again tonight. A very historic moment for our nation and the world.

  • I really don't believe that there will EVER be another president like Ronald Reagan. He lead America by a set of values that are not being seen in the current crop of presidential candidates. Reagan was a great leader, a great orator, and a true conservative, the likes of which we will probably not see again.

  • I just turned old enough to vote when he ran and I never regretted that vote. I would have voted for Kennedy had I been able, the quality these two men above so many who ever held office is they lead not only with a moral compass, but that it pointed to God for their direction. While man was never made to rule himself there are shining examples of how nearly we can get to greatness in following truth and justice when we walk towards it.

  • Say what you want, but I remember that day. I remember watching it in school, and I remember teachers and school kids alike crying their eyes out. Politics aside, Reagan helped console us. And the whole episode reminds me a bit of our once shared national unity. I don't think anything could unite us like that today...and it's sad. It sad that people are so divided and segrated these days.

  • John Magee poem quote to end that speech made it classic. I, also...was a young lad when the challenger disaster happened...and that speech also helped make Reagan a favorite President of mine. I still can't believe how much I cried during coverage of his funeral in '04.

  • I think this was the most memorable and eloquent presidential speech I have ever heard in my lifetime. I remember seeing it on television vividly as a kid. Even then it made an impression on me.

  • This is one of the greatest speeches I ever heard. Say what you will about the man, but he was an excellent writer. He knew just what to say to touch your heart. I was just a kid when the Challenger explosion occurred and even upon hearing this speech at that young age I felt the power of it. Even now, it still has the same effect.

  • There is a lot of evidence that the Reagan White House pressured NASA to launch the Challenger despite serious safety concerns. The engineers at NASA were saying no, but management would not listen. The disaster did not have to happen, and it was probably Mr. Reagan's fault.

  • You should be ashamed of yourself. NASA makes the same complaint about every administration. The risks that morning did not appear greater than usual. They are not at 'fault', in the ethical sense you use the word, and neither is the Reagan administration. Your comments are irresponsible and ignorant.

  • And I say that you are the one who needs to check your facts. There's an engineer at NASA who, just after the launch, said, "We just dodged a bullet", which, they, of course, did not. Engineering, without exception, was recommending not to launch, for reasons which were obvious. Management made it clear that they weren't interested in hearing about it. They had already been "pushing the envelope", and, unfortunately, this taught them the wrong lesson, that they could keep doing so.

It points the finget at management. The reasons were obvious, you say, but the Challenger was launched, so it wasn't that obvious. We agree it was a horrible tragedy that's part of our national memory. But let's not make irresponsible comments like "it was probably Mr. Reagan's fault". If it's probable, put up some evidence.

  • I have never commented on a video before. But I felt the need to do so on this one. Never in my life have I heard a speech to that extreme. God was truly holding his hand as he wrote every word. I was born at almost the exact time on that January 28 1986 morning. And will forever take time to remember these incredible people as I celebrate another year of my life, and their great commitment!   • No president writes his speaches AhmedBahzzi but u can`t fake emotion and when reagan met with the families of the Challenger we saw compassion, and the type of human being he was. U don`t have to agree with his policies but he respected everyone, even those u didn`t agree with him. Unfortunality we don`t see that anymore.

  • reagan himself did write this speech his speechwriters would write speeches but reagan always had the final word and would change them if he wished. he was a great communicator, a great president, and like most from that generation a great man. my mom met him when the remains of her brother were brought home from vietnam in the early eighties. a week later he called my mom to ask how she was. he even spoke to me briefly telling me to do good in school. that is an honor i will never forget.thanks
