  • That's the kind of buck every hunter dreams about... :(

  • Somebody should forbid dubbed movies. For your own good.

  • the best most moving scene of the entire movie

  • When he shouts 'OK!' it's as if he's talking God or Existence, Life itself....

  • ''just one shot''

  • I could never figure why they shot this scene in some real mountains when it was supposed to take place in Pennsylvania...or did I miss something?

  • the point of this scene, is not about hunting being grand- Michael had learned a respect for life, and an abhorrence of killing, as a result of his horrific wartime experience. It is the most poignant scene in the movie, in my opinion.

  • Only cowards would kill a creature like that.

  • @TheBeatlesShop only zionist are against hunting

  • This scene 'transcends' deer hunting and I hunt deer. This scene is poetry. The music (and the film) brings tears to my eyes everytime.

  • That's right, I cry every time I watch this movie too.

  • There is absolutely nothing grand about hunting...

    Great film though.

  • Perfect scene. Any hunter or warrior, no matter how great, eventually will turn the gun on himself. De Niro's character, Michael, has lost his ability to kill. This scene is beautiful symbolism.

  • how can this scene have great impact on you if it dubbed? Everything that is dubbed becomes comical.

  • is the music in the background to do with the Russian heritage of the main characters?

  • @TheSparkyG i am sure

  • raped by not being able to understand this language.....

  • I fucking cry every time I see this movie. That's right it makes me cry.

  • Anyone with half a brain understands there is no challenge against a gun. Cowards use guns.

  • Apocalypse now is a marvel of technically beautiful filmmaking.Deer Hunter is a marvel of film.

  • I can sense the whole movie by just watching this scene

  • un solo aggettivo......... GRANDE!!!!!

  • reminds of caspar david friedrich's painting 'wanderer over sea of mist'. certainly a spiritual scene.

  • He can't take the deer because Nick isn't with him.

There's a scene earlier in the movie, just before the wedding about "one shot," the principles of hunting and how he doesn't trust anyone on the mountain with him other than his best friend who he promised never to leave in Vietnam.

    This movie is a 10

  • @stosh3 I think he does not take the deer because of after Nam and hunting man...it is a Hemingway quote at the front of the book...

  • NOW THIS IS A FUCKING MOVIE! NOT THE GARBAGE WE GOTTA WATCH THESE DAYS. THESE DAYS PEOPLE NEED SHORT MOVIES PACKED WITH ACTION AND OR JOKES NON FUCKING STOP BECAUSE THEIR ATTENTION SPANS ARE TOO FUCKING SHORT AND IT RUINS IT FOR THE REST OF US.

  • some people probably miss the point because it happens so fast

  • De Niro's done English, Italian (GF pt 2) and now German

  • MAO

  • My guess is ....THIS IS THIS ... Thats my guess

  • Okay.

  • anybody know what song is playing in the beginning?

  • This movies title sums up the story in a simple eloquent fashion. Towards the end of the movie, Robert Deniro's character was stalking a beautiful Buck. He finally got his gun sights locked in for the kill, but then something happened. He couldn't do it. After the war. After the loss of his friend Nicky, he valued life all life. He was no longer The Deer Hunter.

  • @swmita I dissagree slightly but not saying you are wrong. Personally I think the reason he didnt take the shot was he could no longer kill for sport. Its kinda what you are saying but I think the sport aspect, so illustrated via Russian roulette in Vietnam, was more the deciding factor in him putting the gun down. Nearly everyone values life and I dont think that was the point of this film.

  • @jammin1975 On that aspect of the movie I believe you are right there with the overall point of this film, simple, but complex. But in that particular scene Deniro's character has trouble killing the deer, he shouts okay as though he is making peace with himself. However anyone interprets the movie overall, it just seems all was not right with this green beret, trained to kill, who could no longer kill a deer.

  • what the hell is a red deer doing in america

  • Makes good sense to let that elk go, make more little elks.

  • This is epic, after what he and his friends went through he can't bring himself to kill the elk. He realized the value of life regardless if it is man or beast. I'm no treehugger and am conservative by nature but the message here is undeniable.

  • lol thats actually an elk

  • @wallacejarred European Red Stag. Magnificent beast. I guess the North American Whitetail rack was just not Hollywood enough. lol

  • De niro is left handed and holds the rifle into his left shoulder. The scene at 3.03 shows him holding the rifle into his right shoulder. Perhaps the image is reversed in that scene. He has a watch on what apparently is his right arm. Also the film has been translated into Scottish and in that version he says "och aye"

  • Beautiful deer, beautiful film.

  • The best scene in the best movie ever made.

It's just sad that this version is in German.

  • The use of the Russian Orthodox choral music here is totally awesome.

  • He can't see himself take another life.

  • its not real hunting unless you can be hunted back!!!

  • movie is,first of all: about friendship and how terrible,chaotic was Vietnam war.it seems for me,as movie fan,the remaining of all terrible things,which happens out in jungle(russian roulette,and that scene,where they meet Mike,on the field,:he is not remembering,who they are+where etc.),only thing,towards sad ending,is friendship,love for eachother,as human beings.it does not change:only''one shot''changes.(No Killing).that's my perspective.great movie!anti-war film, has Cavatina,astheme tune

  • The most perfect buck,a maybe once in a lifetime kill or is it a sign from God to go back to Viet Nam and save his friend?

  • If you look at his character in the movie you realize he was a Green Beret. Those men are highly trained and he should not have missed that shot at that range. But his personal life was in an upheaval at that time. When he tried to take the "shot," he realize that his internal well being is what affected the shot. The deer walked away because DeNero knew that something was wrong with him, and the miss was the self actualization of the internal struggles in his life.

  • @VeteransOutpost Deniro played the part of a U S Army Ranger not a special forces member. There's a huge difference.

  • @VeteransOutpost Deniro played the part of a U S Army Ranger not a special forces member. There's a huge difference. AND, those are not the mountains of Pennsylvania.

  • @cagekicker18: yeah the mountains are actually the Washington State Cascades. The Alleghenies do NOT look like that.

  • @VeteransOutpost Bingo.

  • zastava karabin hell yeah

  • * Hall of the mountain king

  • I agree one of the best scenes ever shot, in a way a tribute to "hail to the mountain king"

  • Stop that dammed dubbing. Stop it

  • @grimlurk

    This isn't dubbed, you idiot.

    Go watch the movie.

  • @Romansteel13 I Have watched it. Its not in german..

  • @grimlurk

    Robert Dinero said "OKAY".

It isn't dubbed, only the useless characters are dubbed.

  • i think the elk knew

  • Mt Baker in western Pennsylvania, how about that.

  • @cgustafson Yeah. Amazing. That's always pissed me off, really.

  • Dubbing movies should be illegal.

  • oh god, it goes from those beautiful russian chants to that god awful dubbed german language.

  • Pay attention at the minute 3:08, how could made it Michael Cimino so perfect and beautiful, the music is so solemn.

Watch the movie in the cinema should be a great experience...

  • whats this got to do with vietnam. this films well overrated. platoons way better.

  • get the name right fuck

  • @sparkyinbath the deerhunter is way better than platoon. maybe you cannot see the deeper meaning in this film from that view that you got there. to change your view, please remove your head from your anus.

  • @PaulAlbacheese No you're wrong.. The synopsis of this film is - Boring, then they go to war and its random, and then they come home and its even more boring. Given the material, and the fact its the first US film to deal with such material, it should've been substantially better.

  • @sparkyinbath so you really think that they spent all the time on robert dinerios transformation for nothing. "they go to war and it is random" how is it random? because they were captured? and had to play russian roulette? and btw they put the begining in for a reason . the reason was that they thought they had a shitty life in that old steel town when really there is much more to understand about life. get your head out of your ass.

  • I agree with your sidebar comments. One of the most powerful cinematic moments ever.

  • one of the best scenes, no doubt

  • Whats it in German for?

  • Um, for Germans?

  • Is that Wagner in the soundtrack?

  • @Lillogambino that was russian chorus I guess

  • Absolutely stunning vista.

  • @KeithOIbermann

um... ya there are elk in the pacific northwest (i live in washington) and i go hunting every year around the same time for dear and elk, about mid october

  • @sergeantbigmac but tht was a red stag NOT an elk bull believe me i know i hunt them in scotland

  • .....but it is filmed in washington

  • it is filmed in washington state

    which is sort of stupid

  • Mike loses the need to kill, stevie loses his legs, nick loses his life. This film is really ALL about loss. The town, the people, the 3 characters are a microcosym of how the vietnam war destroyed our country. Not a great film though, powerful at times?absolutely..but also very maudlin as well

  • There is always the wild. Until we destroy it.

  • Nice elk. Must have escaped from the zoo because there are no elk in the wild in PA

  • Here the hunter is now conflicted with pain and loss. The music is 'Eternal Memory' which is a prayer for the faithful departed (fallen warriors). The hunter now realizes why Nicki never came back home. Home in the beginning was fun and there were lots of friends. Home for Michael is now a strange, empty, and cold place to live. Why hunt? Why does he let the deer go free? Hunting is meaningless now. Home has become a 3rd world he can never master. PTSD

  • the whole essence in just one scene: simply great .................... one of the best films ever made.

  • @kdotmj I bet you think Transformers is the best film ever made.

  • that is a beautiful buck. it would look perfect over the mantle.

  • Thanks, Btw, Do you know what the music in the beginning of the movie (The Deer Hunter), the "party" music, well the Tetris music, what it is named in Russian, like what the original music is named?

  • Days gone by

  • The first song is a famous soviet/russian folk song called :

    The Volga Burlack's Song

Burlacks were slaves at the black sea during the russian monarchy.

  • This is ny favorite movie and my favorite scene in the whole movie. Please, just upload this scene on english instead of german or what it is.

    Nice work.

Btw, do anyone know what the music in the beginning is named?

  • anyone figure out that piece of music at the beginning. It ain't on the OST.

  • To me, this scene represents the dichotomy that exists between being the "Hunter", and the "Hunted"....what goes around comes around. And how would you act? Being Hunted? Its profound really, this scene.

  • One shot.

  • this is one of the most beautiful sceneries I have ever seen. It's amazing how we overlook such beauty in our lives most of the time. I need to go to the mountains some time ha.

  • nicely shot, nice music. is that piece on the soundtrack? What's the name of it.

  • Wow that was awful.

  • on 1:11 i thought that was the guy!!!

  • This could easily be turned into a Messin with Sasquatch commercial!

  • This part of the movie was filmed near the Mt Baker National Forest in Whatcom County, Washington State. Not in Pennsylvannia!

  • Never knew that;I'm in Seattle

  • Yes, starting at about 2:00, the mountain in the background is Mt Baker. Why the director didn't try to not show such an obvious giveaway that this is not in the Northeast, I just don't know...

  • its really nice

  • My brother and father freaked when they watched this. They are/were hunters from WEPA and they KNOW these aren't the kind of deer found there!

  • Indeed. And anyone from Northwest Washington State may immediately recognize the scenic North Cascades in this sequence.

I believe they were filming to the Northeast of Mt Baker, judging by the position of the old Black Buttes volcano.

  • GUN TO MOUTH! MOUTH! :O

  • Yes - after his experiences in Vietnam, Michael can no longer kill a living thing. Or at least he has pause to do so.

  • Indeed.

  • I have my rifle in my hand. I have had my Weatherby, but I just shot way above. I will not ever kill a deer. Odd, but we do not kill.

  • haha

  • C'mon Sweetiepie! How bout a good ol' Texas asswhippin'?

  • hehe sounds lovely.. bring your boyfriend so he can cry when i trounce your yankee ass.. ;)

man god damn them hills are pretty

  • LoL!

  • I think the whole point is he can't do it. He's learnt what its like to be the deer.

  • @catterwal yup thats how I thought of it too. He was forced to play a game where he had to risk his own life. He just cant do that with another living thing

  • anyone else notice that the deer with the huge rack tends to be an elk?

  • theres defenetiely too much low life rednecks in this comment section

  • I like hunting. My dad is a hunter too ;) I am 14 years and have NOTHING against hunting, I wish to go and kill a deer my self ^^

  • same, but whats better is just drinking beer and doing jack shit.

  • Divine I don't hunt...But you're acting pretty stupid.

First of all most of the deer that are shot, either die instantly or die quickly...Not much suffering really.

second of all if hunters didn't do it then their would be a massive sky rocket in deer population...So either kill them fast or let the suffer from starvation?

You're not very educated are you? =/

  • i love this movie so much. i love when he comes home how he hides from his friends...how difficult it must be for them to assimilate back to "normalacy"

  • beautiful, beautiful movie...

  • Though the mountain scenes are set near Pittsburgh, they were shot in Washington state. It's fairly obvious to anyone from Pennsylvania. For one thing, we don't have any snowcapped mountains or glaciers like in the film.

It's not really a big deal, but it's something you sometimes notice.

  • Does anyone know the name of the soundtrack?

  • The grand idea of hunting is the game! getting pleasure on preying the weak!

    shame on them!

  • This scene brings a wee tear of joy to my eye,its technically flawless, and its taken me 18 years of grief to finally say "OKAY!" to life. The stalk, the aim, the eye contact, and of course the music.Best scene in the movie, and always sadly overlooked.

  • agreed!

  • he's tired of killing, he's seen too much death

  • Michael has just come back from the war and he can't even kill a deer..Great movie

  • Ohh no they're speaking German -

    depressing..

    Kitch-like :P

  • This made me think of the Soprano's episode where Tony takes Peyote and shouts "I get it" to the desert landscape.

  • why does he shout "OK"?

  • you have to see the whole movie to understand i guess

  • i have seen it all, i get the jist of it but just dont understand the "ok" part. Im not the brightest in the land lol.

  • @StoodStill because he just came back from the war and understands the hell of it; he wants no part of it anymore.

  • @StoodStill he was throught with killing

  • first aiming attempt , DeNiro is a left-hand shot. Later , he is the standard righty. Then back to southpaw. I know it is the camera reversing it , the Director should catch that while editing, Not important to the movie , but tale a look,

Great emotions in the movie , by the way.

  • What IS the grand idea of hunting?

  • I good challenging question.Actually i never tried to put it into words .Ill try my best . I guess for me its first of all , i cant feel any closer to nature than while hunting.

  • Also Laurenan you didnt get the meaning of the scene.

Deniro experienced suffering on war, his friends on the hunt didnt, thats why he didnt kill the deer and the others did, he knew what it feels like being hunted, thats the essence of compassion and thats a real spiritual experience!

  • thank you. always wondered about that.

  • Second : experiencing first hand the most substantial principe of our existance : life and death , in a 100 % real way ( seldom anything truely real amongst young people where i come from) makes me appreaciate , respect and love life much more (my own and the one of any other living being ) for i know in a NON fictional / cinematic way ( as most people in todays society do ) what death of something means .A spiritual experience .

  • omg such a bunch of crap! you kill for fun! you make innocent beings suffer and die for pleasure thats what you really do.

How can you like this scene and hunt at the same time, thats just absurd!

  • Grow up.

  • I despite the idea of hunting for fun, but to consider a dear as "the innocent" to me is just absurd. Deers are neither innocent nor sinful, they are just fucking deers.

  • Last but not least : Im able to still not take eating meat for granted in todays world, which also gives me some kind of a " reality " experience . Its still a privilege even if our supermarkets are full with it . I guess there are much more things but this is the idea. Regards to you

  • Very respectable.

Maybe i should experience it myself one day.

  • what hunting?

  • i think it really doesnt matter

  • Good explanation

  • AMAZING!

  • Beautiful music. Anybody know the title of the choral music playing in this particular scene?

Reminds me of "Slavery and Suffering" by the Red Army Choir.

  • if you find out let me know ! But i guess its just the soundtrack of the movie...

  • It's the traditional Russian religious chant "Vechnaya Pamyat" (English translation "Eternal Memory.")

  • i have the soundtrack and that is definetely not the track. does anyone know where to find this actual piece?

  • its a russian orthodox chant called eternal memory, its on the official soundtrack!

  • i am so sorry but IT IS NOT eternal memory, i have the official soundtrack and that is not the piece, granted it may be a russian choral piece but it is not memory eternal, i already posted this a long time ago

  • Holy Shit, it's in damn German.

  • This movie has so many memorable scenes and yes alot that arn't violent are over looked. With that said theres always people like Lauren to pull through :) thanks for uploading

  • thanks alot for posting this. makes a huge difference to see it in widescreen... its a completely new experience to see it this way. i subscribed to you hoping you will post more scenes

  • Bobby D couldn't do it....he had already seen too much blood...what a scene

  • Oh no. German...

  • Great scene with much meaning.
