Your body only needs little amounts of proteins to thrive - too much is not good, eating meat every day is not good for the body. The body thrives off of fresh fruits, and vegetables. Do you have fresh fruit/vegetable gardens to sustain a family for months?...dried fruits/vegetables have been severally damaged from the dehydration process and hold little nutrients. No one really knows how long a person can survive off of dried food stuffs.
@Wirechoke You bring up good points for sure that is why you need a well rounded plan that includeds alot of fresh food. I grow alot of food and when I have the greenhouse built it will be even better.

@TheZombieTomShow I also have 2 separte chicken coups. Hopefully this week I will show you what Iam doing with chickens. We have 4 ducks for eggs also. Variety is what you want so if disease attacks your food supply hopefully it will not destroy everything.
I used to have a pet rabbit and so being introduced to rabbit for the first time was hard for me. Then I finally took in a bit.....DAMN I LOVE IT! THAT IS GOOD EATS THEIR! Slow cooked in a fine red Merlot wine with rosemary, fresh garlic, black pepper, and mushrooms over polenta! MMMM-mMMM, good!
@readyren But these are somethings that we will use. Sunflower seeds, corn, dried corn stalks, Pumpkin seeds, beets, carrots, dried bean and pea vines, hay, wheat.
@readyren Iam not worrying about the lack of fat in rabbits because they are just one part of many to feed my family. Just have a plan, stored food and food you can grow and meat from different sources should solve the problem.
I have to agree with SP1 Id be more worried about Tularemia, but if you listen to James Rawles about stocking 10 quarts oil per person for a year. A bit of tallow, straight animal fat, or oil probably would fix any digestion issue. Not sure what the total fat content of rabbit is however.
Probably a dumb question but, how do you prevent the rabbits from inbreeding? Is it easy to tell them apart (males, females, brothers and sisters) If they do inbreed can you still eat them and it be safe?
@aussiedog29 Not a dumb question at all. We separate the male and females before there ready to breed. So no inbreding. Its not as big a deal as humans and if they have separate mothers and the same problem this would be fine if they are going to be eaten alot less problems with different mothers same father. We dont inbred so no problem. We sell them so we dont save for more breding stock.
Also...one of my neighbors shot a thieving pillhead who was stealing one of another neighbors lawnmowers in broad daylight a couple of days ago. The stealing and burglary is out of control around here. The county I live in was number 2 in the nation for OD deaths from pillheads and they do nothing but steal. I have a cousin who lived across the street who ripped me and several other family members off for about 20 grand for pills. Its only going to get worse.
what general area is that? I am in the new orleans area. we have much the same problems. we are getting a lot of problems with kids doing synthentic marijuana and meth. nose candy is too expensive for them so they steal steal steal.
Unfortunately, the radiation will make all of this moot. Ive loads of chickens, a few guineas, and several goats but what can you do with them when theyre radioactive?...lol At least theyll be 'nuked' so I wont have to cook them...lol. Inflation is upon us in a bad way. I ordered some powdered milk and freeze dried strawberries and two weeks later the pm had increased about 20 bucks to 100 bucks and the fd strawberries went up 7 bucks a can (7 oz cans) to 20 bucks. Im glad I got my order in!
I have had a lifetime of cute bunny images burned into my brain. How in Gods name could i ever eat one! LOL Maybe if I haven't eaten for a week things may look a little different. Now chickens are ugly....Yum!
Good stuff...just make sure Rabbits aren't the only source of meat. They don't have all of the necessary fats to sustain your body, but they are a great supplementary meat, especially during hard times.
Something that occurred to me: How is that building for heat in the summer? Have you gone through a summer with it yet? I am wanting to move my rabbits out of the barn for the summer, just to see if they stay cooler better. They're in a shaded, "breezy" part of the barn, but I worry about heat. Husband is contemplating some type of rolling hutches over our front garden beds. I like your set-up. You've really put a lot of thought into your homestead. Good job.
cuttest food ever=) one question though; if the feed prices go up,or perhaps even run out (no more supplies come in the stores), have u got a plan B for rabbit feed? u must have, if u are planing to be self sufficient. My question is; if that happens, in the winter when there are no crops, what will u feed them? any advice? my grandparents have some chiks and rabbits so i would like to know, thanks.
I like your videos but I think it is cruel to keep living beings in small cages (it is Auschwitz style concentration camp ? They need to have 'a life' as much as you do! Sorry thumbs down for this one!
@nyannucc -- KainanRa (his channel name) has tackled the difficult topic of how to butcher rabbits very well. He gets hate mail for his vids on the subject, but he does an excellent job of showing the viewer how to go about this unpleasant, but necessary task with regards to home meat production. His is my go-to channel for all things meat rabbitry. His butchering vid helped my husband immensely harvest our own rabbits.
I was in Belarus last week and the family I stayed at eat 30 plus rabbit a year. He does not feed his rabbit store bought food, but feeds tree branches, hay , potato left overs ie free stuff.... Great Idea you have here....
Southernprepper1 made an awesome point when he said he can't see taking food out of his kids mouths for people who didn't see preparing as important. Now is the time to prepare, so we can sustain our own in WROL sit. Thanks Southernprepper1 for all the great info. I hope all that watch learn and do accordingly. Advice is free negligence will be paid for dearly
@jmmurdy LOL! No, actually it's quite a depressing thought... I'm not even sure if I'll do it because of that reason myself. But what choice do we have? In my case there really is no space for that. Maybe I'll take that one guy's Quail idea.
50 dollars in any kind of food production is glory indeed, especially one that'll land you meat and nice fur.
A nice lick of paint on that structure and it'll look nice. In my country we use a traditional paint with copper pigment, rye and linseed to keep away dry and wet rot, we call it "Falu Röd" you can make it yourself, just google "Falu Red recipe" (nice in WROL). Not a bad idea just to protect the wood of your buildings.
I found a guy on a survival forum that is raising quails. He says they provide more meat then chickens and require less feed plus they grow and multiple quicker than chickens.
Good video. I've raised everything from pigs to chickens; folks, it is not that hard except when it comes time to slaughter. It is not like hunting, it is harder to do at first. Any advice for people on that? It is one aspect of what you presented and you totally ignored it. For rabbits, a 2x4 to the head really hard probably works the best from what I've seen... never done it myself though; I always used a gun (head shot). A morbid subject but one unavoidable aspect of meat production.
NOT TEH BUNNEHS chickens and turkeys ok but rabbits are so darn cute, about the last on my list to eat besides cats/ dogs. i would eat veges and fruits only before that
Good looking setup. Rabbits are really starting to take off as a food source. Good to see even for the good times and will be invaluable for if/when things get bad.
Great job although I can't raise rabbits I do have a vegetable garden, and believe it or not I use large flower pots for tomatoes, squash, eggplant, cherry tomato, cucumbers, Grape vines and string beans. It's amazing with my short growing season I get so many vegetables I have enough to give to mom and sis.
Thanks for sharing your prepper life style with us.
Iv been stessing the raise your own animals point. I live down in Tx and a few ppl that i talk to abou tthis say that they are just going to hunt and fish if something happens. I tell them the problem with that is everyone around here knows how to do that so the population of animals will be gone in a matter of months. Great vid
@The85F0X yea hunting good but can't be counted on 100%. Fishing will expose you even to get milk jugs set out. If hunting 1 shot.. 1 kill (multiple shots help give people your location 1 much harder to track).
Something I just found locally is a habitat for humanity store that salvages left overs from homes they tear down. They sell the toilets, cabinets, doors, windows etc for dirt cheap and it goes to a good cause! This comes in handy when building extra shelters. Good vid sir!
Personally I'd never eat a human being but if I had a dog or two who were starving, I would have no problem feeding a human to the dogs (only if the human were an intruder or something).
Like in that book "one second after". An intruder broke into their home and killed one of his dogs. They killed the intruders but then they just buried the bodies. In that situation I'd have no problem feeding the bodies to the dogs. It's not Cannibalism for the dog!
Great rabbit house! I have bought several building materials off Craigs and another Classified web-site and you can really score. People are needing cash right now, so building around the homestead can be cheaper if you want to take the time. Again, great vid.
ammo prices are set to increase in 2 weeks accross the board, according to Sootch00, due to increases in component metal prices.
Guinea pigs are an ancient food,Currently in South America they are bred on farms (Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and producing countries), are food for thousands of families.

Hey , SP1 i have not got my invitation for rabbit stew cookout with ENGINEER775. I assume you just have'nt mailed it yet. I will keep checking my mail box.
Hey southernprepper1 I love your videos man, they are very informative. If you don't mind sharing; could you do a video of the set up costs to buy land and start a homestead. How much are the big expenditures? and is it possible to do it with little to no capital wealth?
@ProjectEndure I've been looking into land most of the southwest there is very little land that is farmable (water) for little money. You can get land for as little as 600/acre when buying larger plots such as 40 acres. The problem comes with getting a well, from what I've have found it is 1000' on average and $20k just to get water. If you want electric and phone you can plan to spend another 20k although if your luck and there is already a power line then a hookup is ~$2k. Good Luck
@Meinepartei Dont worry tree hugger, they wont feel cramped when they get smacked in the back of their skulls and have the fur pulled off of their bodies and gutted then beheaded.. ITS FOOD YOU FOOL.
I thought the swiss were wise people with all their NBC bunkers,,, well there is always chaff mixed with the wheat.
Would it be possible for you to do a video on how you humanely harvest your rabbits? I saw a video on youtube about something called a rabbit wringer which breaks their neck.
@ southernprepper1 I hear ya. Our orange juice here in northern Alaska went from 4.50 to 7.29 a gallon in ONE DAY! We have started 1200 plants for the garden I expanded to 5 bee hives this year and four pigs. Turkeys get here in may. We've found that the cost of feeding a turkey is less per pound of produced meat. You are absolutely right, everyone needs to raise their own food on their own land within a few feet of your door. We are using permafrost to keep food frozen in case the power goes.
I started raising New Zealand whites 2 yrs ago. They're great for the garden. I get my water bottles at walmart for $3 & use the nozzle on 2 liter pop bottles. I have a push mower to cut grass & they love the clippings. They don't digest corn very well so if u feed them whole kernals u'll see them when u butcher the rabbit but it doesn't harm them. The Encyclopedia of Country Living lists food they can & can't eat. It's the best resource u can buy for homesteading.
Probably the best video you have done on food, as it deals with protein and calories, not just starches and packaged food stores. Now we are looking at sources of fresh food under our own control - not reliance on suppliers of dead food. Supplemented by eggs you will get enough essential fats. Your recommendation to learn the skills NOW is also spot on. There's a good video here on getting a rabbit ready for the pot: watch?v=IpwhOE74TMA. Thanks SP1 & son! Don't be just a YouTube prepper!
Great, great video. I'm a tryin, I'm a tryin!!! LOL I live in East Bakersfield, CA a very 'bad' part of town. i live in a small mobile home park. i have planted 2 black berry bushes, 2 concord grape vines, a gala apple tree, a garden and a navel orange tree that was here when we moved in. i have a storage shed that would work perfecly for a rabbit house. Thnx for the info. God bless and keep u and ur's safe :o) SidewinderFF
Great topic for a video! I've been working on "sustainable" food sources myself. Growing traditional foods in my native soil is almost impossible. Besides weak soil, we also have plant diseases and pests that make things difficult. As a result I'm trying many different things to find the few things that work in my situation. I'm even learning to cultivate and grow local native edibles as an option. That's how the Calusa Indians did it before we got here.
@werno175 No NO NO....I want you to network and develop your own retreat so their will be more life rafts to take in as many of our fellow americans that we can. We will have to rebuild. If you cant afford it find like minded people and prepare something with others.
@southernprepper1 Haha I laughed really hard at this comment. Some things are slow to catch on for some people, that's ok, it's all a learning experience :)
Wow, i have never tought of rebuilding society ! Thank you for this comment. I was already thinking : I have everything prepped pretty much but. But it felt like i was missing something i think this is it :P
@southernprepper1 The dude that wants to drive to your place should have been at the conference. Then he would know what you are talking about. Showing up at retreat un-invited is a good way to see an AR from the muzzle end.
@southernprepper1 I get that commment alot. I try to tell people I know about prepping and thats what they say "i'll just come to your house". I try to make it very clear that would be a waste of energy. I would find it difficult to take food out of my childrens mouth's because these people did not see preparing as a priority...
Trying to paste in the link to the Rabbit Skinning and Preparation video, but getting an error. You can find it by searching for jamesmarchington and it is in his upload list.
Does protein poisoning come into play with these rabbits? Do you have other sources of protein besides rabbit? The wild game population will take a heavy toll during WROL....Gunny Z
@silvereagle1833 The problem is when all you eat is rabbit then you have a problem because you dont get enough fat in the meat. Yes I have chickens, ducks, rabbits and wild game in the area. Plus I personally have raised my level of stored food to a higher level. Food is not getting cheaper and I love to eat.
@silvereagle1833 - Good Reminder! I deal with the Fat shortager by quartering them and browning them in a large cast iron skillet with about 2 spoosns of olive oil. Add potato or any other starches, and you will be fine. Or, if you put them on a spit, brush them with olive oil mixed with your seasonings (pepper, chilli powder, garlic salt, etc)
@silvereagle1833 The phrase "protein poisoning" is very misleading. You do not need other sources of protein to live healthily. The problem only develops when all you eat is lean meat which is simple malnutrition. As long as you're eating carbs, vitamins and minerals with the rabbit meat there will not be a problem. That being said chickens, ducks and geese are excellent ways to supplement your diet with meat as well as eggs.
Rabbits seem more practical for me personaly. I live in the city so I dont want the neighbors complaining about noise. I dont have enough room on my property to be completely self sufficent but I plan on making alot of a fewer things to be able to trade for other stuff we may need or want. Thank you for sharing it is helping me a whole lot.
@clintsmith96 Not really my son mess around with different aniamal hides but one day we might make something. So many differert ways to fix them. I would really have to do a seperate video on this. In the next few weeks Iam going to prepare 2 at engineer775 house and we will video tape it.
@HighValueWarrior That one is a very good video. I watched that one years ago and its probably one of the top ones out there. Thanks highvaluewarrior for bring this up. I posted in my favorites so now I dont have to make one on butchering rabbits, just direct them here. This guy is a professional and well done. HighValueWarrior your the man.
@HighValueWarrior I watched your viedo it was very well done quick and short i really liked it. It was a little difficult to find on your page if you could put up a link in your comment to help others as long as its cool with southeren prepper
Curious about your plan for feeding rabbits in a shtf situation where buying feed would be no longer an option. I'm growing side corn this year for the winter months for my chickens and am tossing the rabbit idea over as well.
@EastTennesseePrepper Great question and one Iam struggling with. Hopefully we will have alot of pellets to get us thru 3-4 months but eventually we will need more food. (If I had time or warning I would buy alot more pellets) Hopefully the garden will be doing good. But these are somethings that we will use. Sunflower seeds, corn, dried corn stalks, Pumpkin seeds, beets, carrots, dried bean and pea vines, hay, wheat.
@stevesmitty79 Yes in the summer we also put a piece of 18inchx18inch ceraminc tile so good for feet and also its cooler and they like laying on it. Its easier to clean and doesnt soak up urine. Also the smaller rabbits get 1/4 inch metal so easier on feet and the poop still goes thru.
A quick internet search will give you safe and non-safe foods for your rabbits.. don't forget to give them appropriate twigs and branches to gnaw on.. need to keep their teeth healthy!!
@waypasthadenough "Allegedly wild rabbit isn't that good long term..." Not likely to be a problem for the average obese American for about 6 months or so. I don't think anyone is recommending a diet solely of rabbit meat.
Very cool, I think alot of the urban people need to get over "The Cute Bunny Syndrome" and come to reality. Thank you, Take care and have a great day.
check out the video on the Black soldier flycomposter were they eat up two large trout in a matter of hrs. BSF larve eat mostly vegitable matter but will gladly eat a little carrian (spelling) if fed to them also they put off a chemical that tends to help keep the blow and house flys away. A BSF composter is a big help in sustainablilty.
lawn clipping to rabbit/chicken pellets, bunny berries sterilized to oyster mushrooms, spent, mushroom media to worm bin, Worm castings to garden...Did I miss anything LOL!. Also bunny berries to Black soldier fly larva and Worms and Larva to chicken feed. The BLack soldier fly composter also quickly takes care of the butcher waste with out the smell and converts to High protein high fat feed for the chickens!
i have no problem with folks raising bunnies for food, but i hate that they never have space to move. The poor things are cramped up on a wire floor. I d wanna have somthing so they could run around a little at least.

Peidmonte89 10 months ago
@southernprepper1 What about rabbit starvation? Caused by the lack of fats and other nutrition you get from beef. Do you think that is over blown?
To be sustainable you need to be able to feed the rabbits from your land. How do you plan to address feeding them? What plants would be best?
readyren 10 months ago
@readyren But these are somethings that we will use. Sunflower seeds, corn, dried corn stalks, Pumpkin seeds, beets, carrots, dried bean and pea vines, hay, wheat.
southernprepper1 10 months ago
@southernprepper1 Thanks for answering.
readyren 10 months ago
@readyren Iam not worrying about the lack of fat in rabbits because they are just one part of many to feed my family. Just have a plan, stored food and food you can grow and meat from different sources should solve the problem.
southernprepper1 10 months ago
I have to agree with SP1 Id be more worried about Tularemia, but if you listen to James Rawles about stocking 10 quarts oil per person for a year. A bit of tallow, straight animal fat, or oil probably would fix any digestion issue. Not sure what the total fat content of rabbit is however.
WAPPERPREPPER 10 months ago
Probably a dumb question but, how do you prevent the rabbits from inbreeding? Is it easy to tell them apart (males, females, brothers and sisters) If they do inbreed can you still eat them and it be safe?
aussiedog29 10 months ago

DemonHide 10 months ago
50 dollars in any kind of food production is glory indeed, especially one that'll land you meat and nice fur.
A nice lick of paint on that structure and it'll look nice. In my country we use a traditional paint with copper pigment, rye and linseed to keep away dry and wet rot, we call it "Falu Röd" you can make it yourself, just google "Falu Red recipe" (nice in WROL). Not a bad idea just to protect the wood of your buildings.

The85F0X 10 months ago
@The85F0X yea hunting good but can't be counted on 100%. Fishing will expose you even to get milk jugs set out. If hunting 1 shot.. 1 kill (multiple shots help give people your location 1 much harder to track).

OOOO! Gag me with a spoon!

Hey southernprepper1 I love your videos man, they are very informative. If you don't mind sharing; could you do a video of the set up costs to buy land and start a homestead. How much are the big expenditures? and is it possible to do it with little to no capital wealth?
ProjectEndure 10 months ago
@ProjectEndure Yes this would be a great idea.. I will see what I can do.
southernprepper1 10 months ago
@ProjectEndure I've been looking into land most of the southwest there is very little land that is farmable (water) for little money. You can get land for as little as 600/acre when buying larger plots such as 40 acres. The problem comes with getting a well, from what I've have found it is 1000' on average and $20k just to get water. If you want electric and phone you can plan to spend another 20k although if your luck and there is already a power line then a hookup is ~$2k. Good Luck

We are using permafrost to keep food frozen in case the power goes.

bigdollars99 10 months ago
I started raising New Zealand whites 2 yrs ago. They're great for the garden. I get my water bottles at walmart for $3 & use the nozzle on 2 liter pop bottles. I have a push mower to cut grass & they love the clippings. They don't digest corn very well so if u feed them whole kernals u'll see them when u butcher the rabbit but it doesn't harm them. The Encyclopedia of Country Living lists food they can & can't eat. It's the best resource u can buy for homesteading.

akdude182 10 months ago
Probably the best video you have done on food, as it deals with protein and calories, not just starches and packaged food stores. Now we are looking at sources of fresh food under our own control - not reliance on suppliers of dead food. Supplemented by eggs you will get enough essential fats. Your recommendation to learn the skills NOW is also spot on. There's a good video here on getting a rabbit ready for the pot: watch?v=IpwhOE74TMA. Thanks SP1 & son! Don't be just a YouTube prepper!

Does protein poisoning come into play with these rabbits? Do you have other sources of protein besides rabbit? The wild game population will take a heavy toll during WROL....Gunny Z
silvereagle1833 10 months ago
@silvereagle1833 The problem is when all you eat is rabbit then you have a problem because you dont get enough fat in the meat. Yes I have chickens, ducks, rabbits and wild game in the area. Plus I personally have raised my level of stored food to a higher level. Food is not getting cheaper and I love to eat.
southernprepper1 10 months ago 8
@silvereagle1833 - Good Reminder! I deal with the Fat shortager by quartering them and browning them in a large cast iron skillet with about 2 spoosns of olive oil. Add potato or any other starches, and you will be fine. Or, if you put them on a spit, brush them with olive oil mixed with your seasonings (pepper, chilli powder, garlic salt, etc)
SteveinBullhead 10 months ago
@silvereagle1833 The phrase "protein poisoning" is very misleading. You do not need other sources of protein to live healthily. The problem only develops when all you eat is lean meat which is simple malnutrition. As long as you're eating carbs, vitamins and minerals with the rabbit meat there will not be a problem. That being said chickens, ducks and geese are excellent ways to supplement your diet with meat as well as eggs.

@stevesmitty79 Yes in the summer we also put a piece of 18inchx18inch ceraminc tile so good for feet and also its cooler and they like laying on it. Its easier to clean and doesnt soak up urine. Also the smaller rabbits get 1/4 inch metal so easier on feet and the poop still goes thru.

waypasthadenough 10 months ago
@waypasthadenough geeze so many people trippin. You don't eat rabbit alone or with every meal. This is why people say Rabbit stew.
vashguud 10 months ago
@waypasthadenough In domestic rabbit protein is 20.8, percentage of fat is 10.25 and calories per pound is 795
Compare this to beef 16.3 protein,28 fat and 1440 calories
so rabbit more protein but also fewer calories.
Rabbit is good for people concern with heart disease
southernprepper1 10 months ago
@waypasthadenough "Allegedly wild rabbit isn't that good long term..." Not likely to be a problem for the average obese American for about 6 months or so. I don't think anyone is recommending a diet solely of rabbit meat.
