@thrip Excellent video. You've taught the basic technique very well. I'm impressed and it's made me think about my own rhythm technique. Big names like Tchavolo Schmitt and the Rosenbergs etc etc. seem to have a very quick upstroke in their rhythm playing. I've noticed you also adding it in here and there. Do you have a suggestion on how the upstroke goes? What beats? How often and so forth?
@mynamesis131 The upstroke should only be on beats 1 and 3 and and done so it's almost imperceptible. There should be only a fraction of a second between the upstoke and downstroke, so it's virtually part of the same beat. How often is up to the individual, and the type and tempo of the tune played.
Brilliantly articulated video of a hugely, HUGELY important nuance of properly executing gypsy jazz rhythm. La Pomp is just such a big part of good gypsy jazz yet so few understand its objectives, a lot of it going back to a percussive intent. It's not 'regular rhythm guitar'. It's 'the pump'.
This is a fantastic video. Well said, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Hi, great lesson.I have a good grasp of how to play the la pompe rhythm style my question is whether this is swung or straight? and how you tell the difference. Thanks
@efarmer385 Hi, it's a difficult question to answer - perhaps it's to do with the way the stroke is played on beats and 4. If you imagine the rhythm played out on a cymbal that could help... sorry I couldn't be of more use..
quick question, do you have to use a gypsy jazz guitar like cigano to get the la pompe sound? coz when i use my guitar it's really really really hard to make a similar sound...
@cupidbackerz It's not essential to have a gypsy jazz guitar but it certainly helps. A classical or solid body can be a problem but any steel string acoustic or archtop should be ok for the time being.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I've been looking around on how to play la pompe.. and finally....someone just lay it down on the table... Thank you.
@vegardno7 You have to dampen the string with your left hand. For example in this case the A string is dampened by lightly resting the fleshy part of the second finger on the string whilst taking care not to inhibit the D string from sounding. You can still strike across all the strings.
Tim, I wonder if you could clear something up for me. I've seen in the videos posted by Dennis Chiang, and on the Django UK site mention of a very quick upstroke being part of the "La Pompe" rhythm. Your video presents it as all down strokes. As a struggling beginner (who finds your explanations much more clear than most of the rest on the web...thank you!), which is it? Thanks!
@kinsleymrme Well the short answer is both are correct. There are different styles of rhythm playing and some players use an upstroke while others don't - it's really a matter of personal preference. Also the sort of tune being played - I will use both depending on what I think is required. I think for beginners though it is best to start without using an upstroke because it can sound untidy unless done well.

You were quite modest at the beginning about your rythmic skills. Thanks for the useful video on la pompe, haven't seen many videos on YT covering the basics of it. Keep those lessons coming, you're great.
i like the one you called 'bad'.
