Since everyone else is getting nostalgic......my first school dance and actually getting girl's phone numbers, Laurie Zammit's old FC Holden, Moana Beach, my first clumsy but secret date, finding a pack of Old Port Colts that I didn't share with the other fellas, the Air Cadets, the chick next door who wore that immodest bikini (now that wasn't fair!), my first transistor radio, Lillie and Marsh, fish 'n chips on Friday nights....and so on and so forth...
I was 11 but was unable to hear this sound and song what can one say did see the band at Festival Hall in Bris ( no longer there and met a lovely young man ,who I never saw again ) life was so lovely and beautiful then in 1977
bondi beach, zinc cream, hot chips, midge farrelly surfboards, best mates, hawaiian shirts, eastern suburbs roosters, dennis lillee, jeff thomson, megatron trucks, powell perralta wheels, casey kasem's americaaaaaaaan top 40, hoyts george st, apricot spurt bubble gum, getting the cuts.....oh man what else?
I was also 12 when this was a hit.Countdown with Molly Meldrum...hey hey its Saturday.....cricket,Mr whippy icecream..........jumping into the pool that was like a hot bath...Sherbet ,dragon or skyhooks on my record player....meat pies, scallops and chips.........my ....Those really were the DAYS !! Australia.....There is no better place FULLSTOP!
This is my era. Although the clothes and dancing were very different to today's standards, the artists were what they were - embedded in the culture. What a fabulous arrangement of various instruments and brilliant harmony from Darryl, excellent, and yes, a hit cover - why not??
It wasn't Cavalry it was Calvary..no video I know of and yes I was a screamer back then..not a grandparent yet so my kids don't give a crap or understand the 70's aussie music lol..bring it back!!
You're hearing it first here, folks. Soon... very soon... some up and coming band or artist is going to cover this song and get a MEGA hit!!! Friday 6th May, 2011.
I was 12 years old when this was a hit. The world was a beautiful place to be back then. Countdown on the telly Saturday and Sunday arvo, then Doctor Who. Playing cricket in the street, with the neighbours kids. Riding our bikes wherever we wanted to go.
@DottyG29 I know exactly what you mean. I was 14 at the time... and, yep, "...Countdown on the telly Saturday and Sunday arvo, then Doctor Who. Playing cricket in the street, with the neighbours kids. Riding our bikes wherever we wanted to go...."
I remember watching these guys on stage at StKilda's home ground in Moorabbin singing this song, FANTASTIC......Then Mark bloody Holden flew overhead in a chopper and dropped flowers on us...It was all downhill from there!!!
My favourite Sherbet song...along with Cassandra... and Can You Feel It Baby... and Only One You, Life, Howzat, You've Got The Gun, Slipstream, Child's Play, Free The People.... well ONE of their best anyway! Love the film clip. Really captures 1975 - the satin outfits, the screaming girls, the hair... and I love Alan's mini-drum solo. Fabulous. 5 STARS!!!!
I'm a yank that taught school in queensland in from 75 to 77. had this on vinly and gave it to a local aussie musician for his birthday...david carter (and the trailer park rangers)....he remembered the band with fondness....wish I neve had left australia
This has to be the best footage of Sherbet on YouTube!! I am having a second teenager rush and am watching all the Sherbet vidz on YT. I always had a spot for Sherbet, like I thought they had some good songs and the musicianship was high but I was enticed by the other side (Shirl & the boys) and therefore never bought any Sherbet LP/Singles ... It's so sad about Harvey James and it's like the '70's all over again ... it's bittersweet, that's what it is ... on to the next vid ....
Spent the last day asking old mates, and one of them said that it was the 'b' side to'Howzat'. Seeing as neither of us has it anymore, I can't say that's gospel though. If you find anymore info let me know, thanks.
@2001chip Thanks man! Just went and had a listen. Still as good as the first time I heard it. Plus the live version has a bit more oomph to it. Thanks again.
@gupsnot you're not thinking of Dire Straits "Water of Love" are you? lol ....Seriously, Motor Of Love was apparently the b-side to Howzat - it's on YouTube
@dostieworld Since my last posting here 3 months ago, I had the problem solved for me. My wife had the single tucked away in our junk room. So, it's all good!
My sister was born in 1960 & they were her favourite band. Years later when my mum & I visited her in a shared house full of uni students, my sister would not let my mum breathe the word Sherbet. OMG, how some people are ruled by others & can't stay true to their soul. I don't want anything to do with people who only want to know you if you are a sheep.
My older sisters both loved Sherbet. One sister was 'in love' with Clive Shakespeare, the other with Tony Mitchell. They had posters on the wall etc, so funny to look back on. I never noticed it at the time - but this is actually a lovely song! Lots of happy memories of sunshine and freedom.
Alan the drummer was really pounding the skins there. The funny thing about Sherbert was that they were perceived as a "Chick" group, but really could knock out some good numbers. As an Aussie bloke it wasn't cool to admit you like their music.
'..All my troubles good-bye/ Walkin' with my heart in the sky' - the musical phrase under these lyrics is a direct quote from the Beatles' "Mean Mr Mustard": '..takes him out to look at the Queen/ Only place that he's ever been..'
Otherwise it was - and is - a great summery Oz pop classic GO SHERBET!!

I am a 46 yo Aust male. To this day everytime I hear this song I get goose bumps. I love this song so much I could swear. Oh to see Dazza sing this in concert.
When I was 14 i went to visit my Aunt in Melbourne and she gave me $20 to go down town and spend it. I went into Allens and bought 3 albums...the first albums i ever bought... Elton John's Captain Fantastic... Skyhooks Ego is not a dirty word ... and... Sherbet's greatest hits. and i had change to go to the footy after ... Carlton v Richmond (Carlton won by a point)... what does $20 get you now... I can understand why so many people blog Ryan's youtube site and wish they had a time machine.
Why do people of today have to make comments relating to a persons so called sexuality...when thay were not even around at that time..how sad!!!! Sherbert were a great band for their time so apprecaite what they they did, and not make disparaging remarks..great band and very much appreciated......
There were more girls at their concerts than blokes.... We followed them everwhere they played in Melbourne...the beautiful Australian girls were all ours.... Jordy Boys Rock
I used to love Tony Mitchell best.Still looks good now (Countdown tour footage).Does anyone know who is married, divorced and what kids they all have including Clive of course. Australian music is the best by far!
Love this song - I was only 7 when it came out, but somehow, I remember it very well.
NZOZ - do you have a film clip of Cavalry by Sherbet? Not sure if there even was one, although I remember something about a ship? Maybe...
I thanked you before, but big props for posting these old classics! I don't live down under any more, so even less chance to see/hear them than normal.
What a classic Aussie killer song!!! No one could do it like Sherbet...Still love em after all these years...and always will...Daryl is still killing them live all over the country. Seeing him perform is an incredible experience....still.
you have to understand the youth of australia in 1975... there was a revolution and Sherbet were leading it. it was the "summer love" movement and many kids believed it... then winter came around and it was all over...
takes me back to a time when aus rock realy was number one without the yank or pom bullshit, be proud of what we have here it realy is good ,there is a lot shit that came out of the us and england
would you want to shack up with them how they look at this present time or go back in a time machine to how they looked then. Jimmy barnes sure looks different to now in choir girl real baby face
ahh yes take me back to those days when aussie rock ruled the airwaves instead of this untalented manufactured crap that gets played now.remember when you could see a pretty popular band at your local and it didnt cost you an arm and a leg.
@69malsurfer .. yeah i lived thru the 70's and it was back when bands were real bands .. everyone had to cut there teeth on the pub scene .. Great Band and Great Lyrics .. go Sherbert .. gone but never forgotten
I used to have an old Slipstream T-shirt from the original tour. Darryl gave it to me. So good to be able to hear what got my heart started back in Australia.
Markflem I rember that! Molly even refused to play it once, saying he was sick of playing it. Still this is a good example of why Clive Shakespear shouldn't have left the group, all the best songs were penned by him and Porter, their music lost something afterwards, when just reaching their peak too, very sad.

Assuming that 'he' is the lead singer, it's Darryl Braithwaite.

Except for Howzat that was penned by Tony Mitchell and Garth Porter.

Markflem I rember that! Molly even refused to play it once, saying he was sick of playing it. Still this is a good example of why Clive Shakespear shouldn't have left the group, all the best songs were penned by him and Porter, their music lost something afterwards, when just reaching their peak too, very sad.

This song was No 1 on Countdown forever! Alright maybe about 12 weeks.

Longer than that I think. Fernando broke the record at nearly 6 months and this one was close.
