One of the primary differences between Isshinryu and other Okinawan karate systems is the use of the vertical punch. Isshinryu vertical punch is unique also in the position of the thumb. The thumb is is placed on top of the fist rather than wrapping it in front of the fingers like a normal fist clinch. This thumb on top positing supports the wrist better while executing a rising vertical punch.
