The modern German navy, Deutsche Marine, uses a 1957-58 build-copy of an original 1933 sister ship of the Eagle/Horst Wessel as a training vessel. It's called the Gorch Fock II. The original Gorch Fock I was taken as war reparations by the USSR but eventually ended up, non-operational, back in Germany where it is a museum ship today. Several YouTube videos of the Gorch Fock II under full sail are pretty cool. Wikipedia has info about all these sister ships - search under 'Gorch Fock'.
The Us Coast Guard use to be under the Department of Transportation. It is one of the major branches of military. It was switched to the Department of Homeland Security after 9-11. Semper Peratus
When the Eagle was leaving miami they kept giving secruity calls every 10 minutes! i was pasing south headed to NO and that cadet was driving me nuts!What did they have onboard nuclear weapons. Wasnt that a Nazi ship capture by the allies?

She was taken as a war prize in 1946 by the Coast Guard and has been in service as the training ship for the US Coast Guard Academy ever since. She is the only active ship of her kind in the military. I had the privelege of serving as a crewmember for two years. I am a holder of the Order of the Sqarerigger.
Many people would beg to differ. The Coast Guard is most definately a military branch. It is not under the department of defense due to a law that states that no military branch under the DOD may engage in federal law enforcement. That is why the USCG in not a DOD branch. Do some research before making an ass out of yourself. Semper Paratus!
That and more. The Coast Guard is a combat ready military branch. The big difference between the other branches, is that we have many peacetime roles that are more well known than our combat capabilities and history. In times of war, we don't even wear our regular uniforms. We wear the same camo uniforms that everyone else does. I know you don't really care, but it's the truth and you don't have to like it. However, you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.
"Cops with boats". Ha. I'll bet there are a lot of cops who would love to have "boats" that carry a 76mm gun with a rate of fire of over 1 round per second and a range of 12 miles. Not to mention the 25mm autocannons and the 20mm Phalanx (50-75 rounds per second). Some of those "boats" are as big as naval frigates.
Oh, by the way, during World War II, Coast Guard units managed to sink 12 German and 2 Japanese submarines. Not exactly your standard police department record. (And this is totally ignoring the amazing search and rescue feats they've pulled off.)
actually the Coast Guard is a branch of the military seeing as my brother wears the National Defense ribbon, is employed by the government AND gets a salary from the government and he's at the Coast Guard Academy..which if you read in college guide books is listed at one of the nations four military academies.
