@Jefgg Your common sense is wrong in this case. In agrarian societies, more children actually means means higher income. Think about it. In the industrial and commercial world, more children mean more mouths too feed, because parents have to provide for their children from ages 0-18. In agrarian societies, you can have a child working in the fields as young as 5 years old, meaning a higher income for your family the more children you have. You are taking a Malthusian approach, and it is wrong

@gddett I consider myself more of a Darwinist than Malthusian. You actually need to be able to grow crops to be considered an agrarian society.  My grandmother was born on a farm in Lithuania. Children much younger than five are able to perform some tasks on a farm. Farmers who have large families usually aren't starving. More children only means more income if you are capable of feeding them.

Just one example is the food crisis going on in Ethiopia, which just so happens to be one of the most fertile places on earth. The people of Ethiopia switched their subsistence food crops for cash crops some years ago, when coffee prices were high and they were actually doing very well. Now that coffee prices have dropped, most farmers can't make enough to feed themselves, and they can't grow food.

1. If the USA sends them birth control, they will not know how to use it, so it will be a waste of money.

2. Some of the reproduction is caused by rape, the other times, it is voluntary. But, think about it. They are humans and they can't live their lives with no enjoyment. They don't have sports (no equipment, no energy after working so hard all day), movies/TV/internet.
