These people have no knowledge on diesels. The emissions of diesels are now comparable to gasoline. Also a lot of Gasoline engine technology (variable turbine geometry, fuel injection etc) is originated from Diesel engines. Also proven that to archive a low (manufacturer claim) mileage on a diesel is much easier then a hybrid...
@ the guy who said to never be embarassed with a GTI parked next to a Panamera or S-Class. Thats a loyalist speaking I bet. The GTI is a nice hatch back, but I am positive there is a better choice other than the GTI. I bet it was chosen becuase its european....
Ok, how mad would you be if you were the guy who got chose to ddrive the Lexus or Prius, and your co-workerwas chosen to drive the Ferrari or BMW. Lol.
@allimage999 I imagine it would be the perfect car for some. It's just not my preference. My friend worked for a VW dealer as a mechanic, he left a year ago, and said he would not buy a VW, until they bring the quality & reliability up. They have a horrible maintenance record. That, and the fact that I think it's pretty ugly, would keep from buying it.
@GymProv: i completely agree..the vw golf is ugly,it doesnt look sporty & doesnt look boxy,it just looks plain & boring,well its expected coz its german.Its plain & boring in the inside,with the plaid interior & boring dash.VW's have serious reliability issues,plus its down on power compared to the mazdaspeed3,srt4,cobalt SS.A hot hatch has to look good,feel exciting,have power,go like a pocket rocket,this just doesnt do it.

I'm sure it's a nice driving car, it just doesn't look the part for this side of the pond. The econobox look is much more popular in Europe. Like I said, I respect the work that went into this, I just disagree. Obviously some people have a problem with an opposing view. Go figure! :)

I guess VW's horrible reliability record didn't figure into the vote.
It must be hard to choose with such a diverse field, but VW's are troublesome and pretty ugly.
I may not agree with this outcome but respect the work that went into making this choice.
I'm also swayed by my personal preference to brand & the type of car I like. I'd never own a GTi so it's hard to get excited about this.
