WHat an awful film. Poor acting, predictable plot twists, and completely historically inaccurate. Not to mention the dubious moral implications of having a poor man commit suicide and then laughed at with no consequences dealt out later. And having the protagonist urinate on a crippled man despite him having learned the true lesson of class. Mixed moral messages and a misleading portrayal of Versailles makes this one of the many travesties of French cinema in the 90s.

you have some legit points, but the guy who urinated on the cripple was not the protagonist, rather he's amongst the group truly ridiculed by Berling's speech here in the end. also, the poor man who committed suicide DOES get our sympathy, which is with Ponceludon, not the wickedly clever ones. If it's any consolation for you, all the wicked ones perished in the french revolution, as the film tells us.

I very seriously doubt that the person that passed this comment knows anything about French culture, and I would go so far as to say that France is unknown to the person concerned! THE question: was the film seen in its original version, i.e. in French?

Tout le monde dit d'un fat qu'il est fat, personne n'ose le lui dire à lui-même. Versailles en est rempli. Allez faire un tour chez les porteurs de sièges d'aisance, vous y trouverez une quelconque utilité. Voilà bien une forte honorable fonction pour votre personne.

Splendide tirade, en effet, qui conclut magistralement ce fort beau film. Le "bel esprit" sévissant à la Cour de Versailles tue, la faveur se calcule à la façon de tourner le jeu de mot, la valeur des uns et des autres tient à un bout habilement rimé. On n'est pas loin de la guerre des oeufs durs qui déchira les Lilliputiens de John Swift !
