I don't know about u guys but this album sounds like an album written after rehab and recovery. Good times, thank you even the title of the album. Look at the early albums all had strong drug related lyrics poppies, opium,Saturday, friggin wave motion gun .I'm not knocking them as they are my favorite band ever and don't know why They haven't outsold the Beatles , I'm just sayin I think they are lucky they are still a band as many don't make it through times like that. Maybe that's why they disapp
I'll admit, I became interested in MP when sex and candy blew up back in the 90s.. But I stuck with them when most others shrugged them off as one hit wonders - which is unfortunate in a way - but also gives more freedom, perspective, and different experiences for the band and their loyal fans. They would be totally different both as artists and people if they stayed huge, and became something like.. say.. another U2. That said, they are one of my favorite bands still today
This sounds like it was played at Woodstock in 1969. Brilliant. Can't believe this is from the 1990s. It seriously sounds like 1969 guys. I'm freaking out.
So, technically shot in Memphis, but only on the outskirts and shitty neighborhoods. Thanks a lot for that, Marcy Playground, as if we didn't have enough to deal with, you have to make our city look like an abandoned field full of train cars. Also, this song is terrible. I liked it better the first time, when it was written by every delta blues musician. 80 years ago. I mean, honestly, "a long and lonesome road"? Sounds like something from a junior high talent competition. Apologize to Memphis.
@LaughingDeath Your right , it's Memphis allright sadly to say , there's not much better to film than this .... I don't know if they shot it here ,but it's Mempis in all it's ex-Mayor Herrington Bling glory .... I live one co. north of Shelby , 1/2 a mile next to the Misipi river . It is a god song tho , but your rite .
That's the thing about perspective. Everyone's is different. Experiencing different areas of the same city can change such perspective to a surprising degree. And insulting the lyrics? really? Consider and imagine for a moment "the long and lonesome road" that Marcy Playground has walked. Take the type of group they are and try to fit them in with the rest of today's sellouts, digitally rendered voices, soulless supermodel pop singer trash, and get back to me on how easy it is.
The natural evolution of music is fueled by creativity. If creativity stayed stagnant, we would not have the beautiful music we have today. Marcy Playground is real, they write/produce/perform their own original music and that is commendable! The "sell-out" bands/stars/american idol winners/etc don't have much creative input. They're told what/how to perform and do not write the music! They're hauled into the studio and digitalized. I think that is the definition of selling out.
@dreadred92 personally i find the less known a band is the less tainted their music has become. commercial success tends to do that to some bands, not all, but some.
True. But there's a problem. It's perfectly ok for a band to change as long as they aren't popular. This is one of Marcy Playground's best albums, but it is very different from their past albums. If a band IS popular, then they are "selling out" when this happens. A band has to be allowed to change, it's only natural. My favorite band (Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer) is not very popular, but their sound has changed A LOT. They've aged 8 or so years however. It's natural.
Always loved this song from the Sex and Candy single. I spent hours and hours playing it over and over until I perfected it! I still dig it out at the odd open mic, to try and spread the Marcy love in the UK
Yep. It was on "Sex and Candy" along with "Angel of the Forever Sleep," which was also featured in some movie. John's wife liked "Memphis" and encouraged him to rerecord it for the new record.
another bad ass song .. lyrics and licks
