It is still very odd that with all the information that dispels the myth of being signed to major labels many artists today are still looking to get signed. Thanks this is great.
The problem with the Artist is he ONLY gets paid AFTER the record company has got all of it's money back............and the artist royalty is $1per unit so...........so the ARTIST pays the record company back at the $1 per unit level...
Jazzy is sharing a lot of really good info, but he is leaving out how the artist does get paid. Publishing, Touring and Merchandising has always been where the artist makes a majority of their money.
Nice Video. I really liked your video youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have build 3 channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to working on.
THIS WORKS! Its amazing.. THANK YOU SO MUCH DUDE!!!!!!
And this video needs to have waaaay more views than it does. All this other garbage on here can hundreds of thousands of views, this is some vital info these teeny boppers who are fame hungry need to know!!
i was in this business lecture with jazzy jeff at acm and he really told us what the business was about!! it certainly made me realise the struggle ahead for composing and producing music!!
its a shame the video isnt longer as he did a small set on the decks and another guy was rapping!! absolutely mental!! but all in all a very very nice talented and intelligent guy!!
yea this is great and all man and i love jazzy jeff but he didn't say when you go on tour you makein like $50 a ticket and you have 500,000 people there thats $25,000,000 LOL that's what chingy made off his debut album just in a concert here in GA haha but he IS still right imagine how much he could make without lables killing him.. but how could you ever afford to promote yourself? look at all the myspace rappers.. ha MJKwote
The days of greedy labels stealing all the artists money with slave contracts are almost over. CD's are going to become obsolete in the next few years so artists won't need record companies or recording studios anymore. All new music will be downloads. The bad side is nothing is stopping people from downloading for free.
I agree, so the only real way an artist will be able to make money is through touring, acting, and other business ventures, and all of that would need to b done w/o being signed to a label b/c now they have these new deals called 360 deals, which means that the record label will get a cut off of everything u do outside of music, so they're still trying to find a way to scoon in on the artist's income. Good thing is, u simply don't have to sign with a label, u can go indie!!
And for the record, I knew that the music business is shitty. because if you notice most of the new rappers that come out have jewels and gear, how can that be? when they just started in the music business, all that shit be rented...Blaze
that makes sense, but what about the part when he said: you sold a million copies but you owe me $900,000. so my question is: where's the $100,000? Blaze
So how come he didn't mention that? plus I know the music industry is a scam anyway. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that all that money, cars, jewelry that they show in the videos is rented. If they(rappers) tell you otherwise they're lying...Blaze
This video is an absolute MUST SEE for anyone looking to get involved in the music industry. Thanks for sharing.

The music business in all genres is all about politics. The top people make the loot and the artists are the slaves who make them all the money!

The record industry as we know will not exist within 5 years.
I am glad it is dismantling. They have ripped off artists for years. I am glad Apple has (perhaps accidentally) changed the game.
Jazzy Jeff is correct in his assessment here. He speaks with good sense.
I could care less if every major folded tomorrow.

It is left to be divided between the artist, the IRS and the artist's people.
