When used right the Merlin is very effective though I've been able to get the same quality shots using the Cam Caddie Scorpion which happens to go for only $38. So you be the judge, personally I think most people would be better off getting the affordable simple steadycam.
This video shows us the differences between two different type of shooting (with or without steadicam). The difference is clear.
Maybe, you should have to film the girl from the nearest to see less movement during the free hand shot...but I found it usefull anyway, thank's to upload it!
@cantyDRUM I'm sorry the framing is not precise enough. The point was not the framing but fluidity of movement. If as you say that the only conclusion that can be drawn is that steadicams are worth the money... you are quite wrong. I've used a few like the hagues and they are most certainly not worth the money, the Merlin is. But it is a very precise instrument and needs alot of patience... so not for all. I apologise for the unhelpfullness of my video

would have been more useful if you had done the same framing on each shot...
All this really tells us is steadycams are worth the money! which of course they are

@fenster73 I THINK what he is trying to say is, that he thinks the steadicam isn't balanced.
