lol but if you live in the south how about the people who live more south then you? wouldn't you be considered north to those who are south then you and so on? are drugs awesome? i think the answer is yes
@NewspaperJoeUK apparently i sound like them :) im from the wirral so i have the accent but people say it sounds more upper class and (fortunately) i dont sound like im talking with a blocked throat
me thinks the beatles far superior to other toady endeavors.......hence the term fabfour.......quite literaly the pinnacle of pop wizardry.......all other questions moot...to produce such varied material that extends to many 'different' genres in such a short period (10 yrs.) is quite amazing, as to define the entire decade of the 60's & influences far reaching to the present day......all over the known world....(with respect to mr bob dylan & others too lenghty a list to make)
@marbleheadband the issue is not who plays more genres but who plays it RIGHT, now i can take a guitar and play: roots, metal, punk, post rock, psych, etc.. and that's not say i'm a genius. there'a a lot of bands who only played one genre but in an artistic way, that is what counts. the beatles never invented genres, there were other less famous artist who "invented" them: zappa, velvet, who, dylan was making MASTERPIECES years (or months) before the FIRST good beatles album: sgt. peppers
@progreadicto There were plenty of excellent albums before Sgt Pepper. Revolver, A Hard Days Night, Rubber Soul were all magnificent. Listen to "Tomorrow Never Knows or "Things We Said Today". Both are better than a lot of the Pepper tracks. The Beatles aren't regarded as the best because of how many genres they played but because of their magnificent songwriting. They played every genre they tried in an extremely artistic way.
@thearachnid09 i have listened all beatles catalog. (i was a huge beatles fan when i was teen) these are good songs. maybe you have to remember that songwriting is not the same that making pretty melodies with clasical or avantgarde music "arregments". the real genius behind beatles "masterpieces" was george martin. you cant compare a 3 minutes of pop ditties to really music masterpieces like in the court of the crimson sister ray, or king kong (frank zappa) (art of high level)
to commiecotch: all bands i've mentioned are far better than beatles, first: zappa created Freak out, when the beatles was making stupid songs like drive my car, when the beatles make his "masterpiece" tonmorrow never knows, dylan has made sad eyed lady of the lowlands, and 11 minutes free form surrealistic poem and incredible singing, when the beatles make Peppers The doors made The End,a song that is near from freudyan analysis and shakespeare tragedies , the differrence is OBVIOUS
@flushnex you cant compare velvet underground with the doors for example ('cos both are at the same level) but it's obvious that you can say that a composer like frank zappa is far better than, for exmple michael jackson or prince, maybe you like both (i like both) but the music quality is completly different. i love the beatles (i love this song), but i cannot say that they are geniuses, cos i know that there are better artist (sometimes much better) than they.
I knew this song was passed over for Sgt. Pepper before I heard the song. When I finally heard it I was kind of surprised. First of all, it's (IMO) easily good enough for Sgt. Pepper. The song fits the psychedelic feel of that LP and should have been included WITH Within You Without You (thus giving George his obligatory 2 cuts per LP). I like the song, its sound and sarcasm. Actually I think Sgt. Pepper is not their best work (though quite good) and this Harrisong was worthy of inclusion.
@SuperFirewire1 and dont forget the doors, hendrix, velvet underground, red crayola, pink floyd, etc, etc,...... there were a lot of far better psichedelic musicians than the beatles
@progreadicto You mustve received several hefty blows to the head if you consider velvet underground or red crayola even on the Beatles radar, the others are equal possibly but not superior.
When George says: "You may think the band are not quite right." I'm over here like: "'Not quite right?' As in... weird? Queer, even? ...Wait. Holy fawking bloody mother of John's gar damn cat.
@GrumpyPancake cant you tell by georges lyrics that he didnt want to this to be snother "late night song" he was saying he was sick of being under estamated he wanted to be recognized for how talented he was
If Im Listening Late At Night Dum Dum Da Da .......oh wait I am listening late at night holy cwaqamoli im all freaked out n stuff now...wow.....creepy stuff dudes
I read somewhere that this song was George's musical complaint against the lousy contract deal he got with Northern Songs- the Lennon/McCartney music publishing company that was co-owned with Brian Epstein and music mogul Dick James. It was originally supposed to be on Sgt. Pepper's.
@IcouldBNE1 I think you're right. The Yellow Submarine soundtrack was released in early 1969, but the sleeve notes on my old Yellow Submarine LP refer to an "upcoming" Beatles double album, obviously the White Album, which was released in 1968. That would mean the Yellow Submarine album was planned for release after Magical Mystery Tour. Some of the YS songs were probably composed at the same time as Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. Seems logical to me. Comments, Beatle-People?
George Martin was the Fifth Beatle; a brilliant sound engineer who worked with / instructed Harrison on development and finished piece. Billy Preston was the Sixth Beatle. God, I lived on this music as a child and connected with Harrison's work and Indian music as somehow already familiar - like listening to a dream I'd already had.
@MrDarwinsDog George Martin was not an engineer. He was a record producer and arranger (now retired). The Beatles had several recording engineers, including Norman "Hurricane" Smith, Phil McDonald and Geoff Emerick.
The best of all the Beatles movies was Yellow Submarine, followed closely by Help. As a child no other movie remains in my mind as firmly as watching The Yellow Submarine.
@bluesage10 thats true, one of the best beatles song reduced to a nothing, far better than many of their "pop hits" and overproduced extravaganzas (sgt. peppers or white album)
