Oh man! For me this was the BEST Star Wars playset ever. There used to be a toy store called California Toys on North Broadway in Downtown L.A. and my dad bought me the last Death Star they had. And it was remarkable because this was back in 1981 when everything was in Empire packaging and this only had the original Star Wars logo on the box. Since then I've acquired 2 sealed sets which I will never part with. This and the original Sandcrawler were my favorites. Priceless childhood memories.
This was was probably my favorite Star wars play stage thing (with the Millennium Falcon coming in a very close second). I loved this thing. I literally played with it until there was nothing left. Over time all of the pieces were worn out or broken and some were lost. I think I carried the disembodied bits and pieces of it around for years even as an adult. It would just go into a storage area. I had really good times with this as a child, and I always think of it with delight.
@lcirej71 Believe it or not, back then it ranged from $18.99 to up to 25 bucks. And 25 dollars was usually the store that always charged more for it's toys than other stores did.
I remember getting this for Christmas, 1979. It was basically cardboard and plastic, and my smartassed 16 year old brother said, "In two weeks, that thing'll be a FALLING star."
I remember having this as a kid. I found out that the big laser cannon doubled as a ray gun when we played war in the yard. Sadly the rest of the playset met its demise when my father locked the dog in the garage where it was stored ... the dog even managed to rip apart the little foam squares from the trash compactor. Nothing was left of it except a pile of shredded cardboard and disfigured pieces of plastic with bite marks in them.
Of course, nowadays you can buy the Death Star set piece-by-piece in more elaborately detailed sections from Tarkin's briefing room to Docking Bay 327 to the core for the superlaser cannon.
I haven't seen it myself, but if I know Lucasfilm and the Hasbro Toy company and the way the two companies market toys and collectibles nowadays, you can expect such items anytime soon...mostly when you least expect it. After all, the $150 "Deluxe" Millenium Falcon from last year's line caught many by surprise.
The Millenium Falcon, you mean? They sold them in retail stores like Toys R Us and Wal-mart last year, but since they've been discontinued this year your best bet is Ebay.
Oh, I wish I'd that one. I had a lot of Star Wars toys like the Mil Fal and the Hoth playset ... even Vaders Tie Fighter. This would have topped them all.
Hey, I am looking on ajy info of a re release of the Death Star Playset or a new one.
I know Lego put out one just recently, as well a a transformers one, but I am interested in Hasbro has any plans to make a new one for their 3 3/4 figure line.
I remember that light bridge never did work like it did in the commercial....... But it was an awesome playset anyway! I wish they would bring this set back like the new Millenium Falcon. I love this new version!
My auntie bought this for me for Christmas when I was in the sixth grade. I was so excited to open it that I couldn't eat a bite of dinner that Christmas.
Sure - it was kind of flimsy (all the walls were cardboard inserts) - but man was it cool.
was the laser really supposed to do that, or did the damn kid break it and they had to cover for it? I didnt have the star destroyer, but I had a Tecnodrome from the turtles and if that was any indication of how Kenner made its "you put it together" playsets, I'm sure the Death Star fell apart, 2 meter exhaust port not included
This thing was kind of a piece of shit...I remember the cannon, and trash compactor breaking on mine...maybe I was a rough ass kid...I would love to have it again...
Why did my little sis brake mine it makes me so mad now all i have is the trash monster o well still got my complete ewok village the ewok village was better to begin with =D
So here it is,13 years later and Hasbro STILL has yet to bless us with a "kick ass" version of this holy-est of all holy grail toys. Yes,the new 2008 Mega size,tricked-out Millennium Falcon rocks, but just think of a new Death Star. It would be sweeeeeeeeeeet. Oh well,I guess those two 1996 crappy play sets were supposed to satisfy us. Ha! They sucked total ass! What a frigging joke those were!
I WANT ONE SO BAD!!! :( one time me and my dad built a death star playset out of cardboard boxes just like this one to hold me over till i finally got the real one but when i put it in my grandparents garage they threw it out. i was so pissed when i found out!!! >:(
I had one when I was a Kid til my Mom decided to get rid of my stuff while i was sent to Granny over the Summer. Luckily, several years ago, My now Ex-Wife worked with a Guy who told her he had some Starwars playset "unopened" in his attic and if I would be interested in it. When I found out it was the original DeathStar I was Like "HELL YEAH" although he thought I was crazy to pay him $75.00 for it. "If he only knew what it's really Worth! Its still unopened but I urge to play with it sometimes
I wanted one so bad for christmas.I carried the sears catalog around for a month showing everybody the picture of it.I told mom and dad if I didnt get anything else I would'nt care.

The laser was designed with a button that you hit to make it "explode". That's what the kid in the commercial did.
