You want to take the swell head on, as opposed to taking it from side to side. I assume the captain was taking it head on, and when far enough turning around and riding it back into the channel.
That was just the course that the Master chose to take to avoid getting hit side on by the big waves. He then headed into the Eastern channel towards Circular Quay.
i got drenched in 2006, was standing at the front. would be nice if the capt gave us a warning too. fkd my phone royally. was exciting watching the wave come right over us tho.
