Warfare is based on deception, hence in a mass attack, one needs to have their flanks and rear covered otherwise, its checkmate. Scout and OP should be extended to the flanks and the rear to relay information to the main line such that the reserve forces can commit to where ever a position is being attacked on either flanks or the rear.

By having a defensive force that isn't static with high mobility, your infantry must be lightly armed and stocked heavily with ammo. Provide counterpunch

If you're trying to repel mass attacks by guerrilla insurgents, yeah you can camp up on the highest building with a sniper rifle.

But against lets say a well trained modern army, they would already have observed your high points from far, placing artillery strikes and tank fire on those positions to reduce them to rubble.

What one can do is to have lots of ammunition, an extra barrel, pour down MG fire from tripod or bipod and then leap and bound to another position every minute.

By the way, just to clarify to those who are unfamiliar with history, the Chinese "mass attacks" did not mean zerg rush using bayonets. The Chinese learned after WW2 that they are ineffective. Rather, by "mass attacks", what the Chinese did was persistently held their ground and kept on shooting like waves crashing against a shore against the UN forces while delivering accurate aimed fire with their bolt actions. The result? 1.2 million deaths vs 780k UN deaths, even when poorly equipped/armed.

Sitting in an obvious position waiting for an attack is just dumb. If you are sitting in the open with a .223 they will simply snipe you with a .308 or .50 outside your range, or call an air strike. The sniper pwns the "machine gun". We won't be fighting the Chinese, we will be up against U. S. Northern Command fresh out of Iraq implementing summary execution of "potential insurgents" (people who are not slaves).

@jewpez83 The weapon does matter. If your using a weapon that's not designed adequately for a geographic location, then you're already at a disadvantage.

Case in point m4's/m16's suck in dirty environments such as deserts and jungles. A ceased gun can cost you your life.

If a gun is unreliable then it does matter, because a gun that doesn't shoot is useless.
