@posro1988 Maybe registering in Helsinki is cheaper, do you know how many ships are registered at Panama or Monrovia (Liberia) even being sailed by european companies?
@Renatodonadio yes I know, but should't names be written in latin alphabet if registered in finland, nyk has their ship names written in english with japanese characters below that
@posro1988, the ship (Norilskiy Nickel) was only registered to Helsinki during the initial journey. After the ice trails it was re-registered to a Russian port.
@helstontvx, QE2 was refitted with diesel-electric propulsion in the mid-1980s. Diesel-electric ships have been around since the Second World War, so it wasn't anything special.
@helstontvx do not recall saying it was special? however it was 'special' in the fit out installation and rectification and the size of installation two of the largest DC motors ever built GEC/ALstom...my Father commissioned it. bit of trivia, on its trial it lost a bearing that was delivered via a Nimrod.
Please lets not get all bitchy we are commenting because we enjoy engineering right?
Wow, that looks (and sounds) good. But I fear that azipods are quite expensive compared to the usual system of propellers and ruthers. That should be the reason why not every company uses azipods on ther new ships. But we can wait for it: the next decennia that is probably going to change...
All new cruise ships should be fitted with these types of propulsion units. If shipping companies don't choose ABB azipods or any type of azimuthing propulsion, they are making an awful mistake.
Not all cruise ships are building their newest ships with this type of propulsion. They have the option to do so, but in my opinion, they ought to be fitted with this type of propulsion unit.
@ 2:04 port of registry is helsinki nut ship's name is in cyrillic?

Espetacular, Magnífico, mas essa semana o Azipod das Barcas S/A pode ter sido o vilão no acidente no Rio de Janeiro.
De qualquer forma uma mudança absurda no conceito!
