  • *Sigh*

Ironicly it seems that the only way the human race can be dumbed down to its former normal harmless stature is that earth needs to wipe us out

  • @BataFatCat We fucked up real bad, I'm still waiting for the day to come for all the stupidity of humanity to be eradicated

  • is this michael tsarion?

  • Love this.

Alternatively you could argue that our NASA technology (hubble) allows us to view the heavens closer than ever.

However spiritually, the Ant's argument is dead on.

  • i went to Moab with my family, and one night we drove out into the mesas to stargaze in one of the few International Dark Sky areas in America, and the stars were so amazing. it was one of the coolest experiences ever. i wish it were easier for people to see that.

  • Some people are STILL in the dark, even with light all around them.

  • Not only that but all the energy being used by all those lights is melting all the glaciers and both polar ice caps.

The problem may take care of itself.

  • Cool..

    And it does makes sense..

Too bad we can't see the stars like in the video..

    I'm a space lover..

    lol..

Maybe I'll promote this video to my friends..

  • Well said. Original point of view. Interesting format.

  • There will always be haters, people who look down on the beauty seen by people with a bright perception. But those who can see the night sky and be amazed at it percieve something well worth percieving. I have been to the country in a number of areas in my country and others, and seen the beauty and majesty of the night sky. It is well worth a look.

  • Be one with the Universe. Look up in a Dark, Star-Lite Sky

  • There are moments I do feel closer to things in life, but the one with the universe thing is a new age concept that I don't really follow. I do like to be One with nature so to speak, as it is a great healer and easing of anxiety.

  • congratulations..... you missed the point entirely

  • dim witted people like divingfire

should seldom express their stupid opinions but unfortunately idiots flock to youtube to ridicule meaningful enlightenment like this pinky video proposes

    it angers me ಠ_ಠ

  • True, although I don't see a way to change that currently. Population is growing, cities are growing even more. Hopefully this form of industrial societies aren't the end of the development and one day we care about such things again.

I live in a village and when I was a child, in clear winter nights I took my telescope and spend one or two hours outside to watch the stars. That was really cool.

I should take a look in the sky tonight and see, if it's clear enough to see the milky way.

  • Damn ants! Where's my can of RAID?

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:" (Proverbs 6:6)

  • My generation and the ones before mine never got to really experience a world with no light...i wonder how it would be. I wish I could see the stars and galaxies every night before i go to bed. I wish our world wasn't so harsh, i wish we could all see the beauty of space and time...

My generation never got to experience a time when there was no such thing as the internet or an mp3 player or other things...we just learn to consume and waste materials while someone else is suffering for us.

  • take a trip north, i used to live near alert canada the skys are aboslutely beautiful at night.. more so in winter. not a single other sound- no cars, no wind just silence except when the auroras are out in full force, they make a crackling sound. its hard to remember what thats like living in the city now. no matter where i go i hear something.

  • blame crime. Without night-time lighting crime skyrockets. The entire reason street lamps were invented, paid for and installed was to lower crime.

  • so this guys taken some hallucinogenics before also haha

  • Wow, this was so cool. I just turned town my monitor light to zero. I would turn off the light in my room, but it must stay on to ward off human predators in my area. We live in a bad area.

  • I'm not young. My body does things I wish it didn't. I have seen lots of stuff and experienced my share of suffering. I am in awe of you, Pinky. Long may you live and shine your light into other people's worlds!

  • You're breaking my heart. Pinky. It's falling all apart.

  • I noticed this when i went to Skye up North, The sky was so clear, Im a regular stargazer, that i could see stars in constellations i'd never noticed before.

It was beuatiful, but i wish i could see the same here.

  • I don't think starving people in impoverished countries without electricity or running water look up. They are probably as indifferent or more so to the night sky than we are. Electricity isn't the problem. Most humans will always be concerned with their own matters, whether its survival or gluttony. However, I think I understand the video's message. Humans are too powerful.

  • billions visible huh try only 300-400 visible to the naked eye from anywhere on earth

  • you must have very poor eyesight, or only visit light polluted places, the milky way alone is estimated to contain 200 to 400 billion, most people can see down to about Mag.6 stars, in good seeing, (dark), there are thousands of stars just waiting for you to admire them.

  • as a matter of fact i do have very poor eye sight smartass, but in most regions on the planet, with the exception of desert, arctic, and a few others u cant see much more than a few hundred a thousand at the most due to pollutants, environment (mountains) or just the chance density increase of the atmosphere itself. oh an i live about 60 miles from the nearest big city.

  • dear winterborn82, sorry if I seem a "smartass" to you, but I too have not too good eyesight, but I was astounded at the stars I could see, on a trip to the mountains in Austria, and now I live in NZ, sea level, only 7 miles from a light polluting town, I can see thousands of stars every clear moonless night. You yourself now admit "a thousand at most", yet you last said only 400!! Go to the dark centre of Australia, and you would be dazzled at night. "smartass".

  • i'm sorry that i didn't elaborate enough in my first comment, i was simply pointing out the ludicrous comment of billions visible, a number the human mind cant truly comprehend. plus in a lot of places on earth u cant see more than few dozen due to light pollution, so between those places and the ones where u can see many thousands, most people only see a few hundred to about a thousand at a time.

  • LoL - I love how he goes back to his ant farm at the end !

  • "lost sight of their place in the universe." who determines what is my place in the universe? i dont need any sanctions or warrants upon my being by some animated ant. i am the sanction. the modern age has given us a quality of life not possible in more primitive times. we eat and sit around on computers all day. how many cave men could say that?

  • Some cavemen are sitting around on their computers all day.

  • Ironic how a primitivist is accusing me of being a caveman. I suggest that those hypocrites who denounce technology, production, and progress as evil on a computer spend the rest of their days in some primitive egalitarian african commune. Or perhaps you should save yourself the trouble and ask a chinese Mao survivor what it's truly like to live in an undeveloped society. Industrialization always makes the lives of people better. Simple as that.

  • I'm trying to find where in the video technology, production and progress is denounced. You're one of those people who have to have that little extra nuance explained to them - it's not the thing itself, it's how that thing is done. It's not capitalism we have a problem with, it's how it's done. So, I know your ego won't want to hear it, but, wow, it wasn't clever to diagnose us with being anti technology. Sorry. We're anti light pollution; like every backward astronomer. Ya goof.

  • Being "anti-light-pollution" has profound and radical implications. Think about it for two seconds.

  • Yes. It implies that a whole bunch of people didn't bother to think of it, but a few have. That's when, "wut, think yer better 'n us?" tee shirts go on sale!

  • You are missing the point completely. I don't think this ant ( who is just a symbol of a creature who has continued living in the same way for centuries ) is trying to tell you your life isn't right, It's just a reminder of how much the place of human beings has been changed. Look around you and maybe you'll get the point.

  • wow...iv noticed you haters on here that everything you say, you say something about the drawing. That proves that your not even listening to the actual video.

  • what the ant is saying is absolutely true, i used to live in the city, toronto ontario and the sky was dull and grey and when i moved to the country i was much more happier then what i was in toronto, and i love the country it's opened my eyes to how beautiful the universe is and how beautiful it is

  • I know that ant! We had a thing in the sixties...

  • i like the starry sky pictures im no astronomer or anything so could someone tell me could we actually see these great stars in the galaxy if we, well, i guess stopped some things...would there be a way to see these billions of stars? is there anywhere u can see so many it would be awesome if i could see a really star sky...

  • also, more lighting doesn't make less crime. I was mugged twice...once in broad daylight, once right under a bright streetlight.

A sample size of only 2 data points granted, but it flies in the face of lighting advocates because by their logic, neither of those crimes should have happened.

  • as an amateur astronomer, I fully support the dark skies initiative, to try to get more businesses and cities to have shielded outdoor lighting that focuses needed light at the ground and doesn't flood the night sky, robbing us of the beauty of the night.

I live in the city and don't have a car to drive for an hour to get out in farm country somewhere. I have a narrowband filter to screen out mercury vapor wavelengths but it makes everything darker and harder to see.

  • wow really really profound, i really like the way you guys do this clips, yo uguys really have some deep thoughts....thank you!

    P.L.U.R.R.

  • interesting and profound.

i am just a tiny organism the side of a rock in an ocean of darkness. I am in many senses, an ant...tiny and fragile.

but the odd thing is that i understand this. I acknowledge my own existence. Do others acknowledge theirs? why am i even asking these questions?

  • most people who watch these Pinky videos are missing the point, hence, your vile comments

  • Well put.

I had this long exchange with an earnest young objectivist here a month or two ago, and I think I got through to her a bit.

But everybody is so either/or around here.

  • "Human beings have forgotten their place in the order of things"

wow if that isnt one of the most totalitarianism and anti-human type comments ive ever heard.

I understand what the video is trying to convey but that comment seriously makes me lose a lot of respect for this production

  • Most of the extremist comments I understand, but I read yours again, Shaok, and I realized I get where you're coming from in a general sort of way, but I don't understand specifically what you are saying.

  • wow i didnt know ants were that smart....

  • i agree. ANd ur comments were marked as poor. One sided. Pinkys a dumb bitch

  • Wow, thank you. You just gave me an even better reason to kill ants.

  • WTF does this dumbass cat want us to do? Turn of all our lights and doom civilisation? for fuck sake, im sick of thise dumb ass faggot cat bagging humanity for all its problems.

  • thats where the problem starts

  • agreed

  • Lazarus, nobody's saying we should "give up" electricity- it's not an either/or thing. I see my city at night, and it's staggering how much light is used to illuminate closed stores and advertise closed businesses. Safety is one thing, but wasting electricity on the chance it might help move merchandise... that's not a healthy attitude.

Also, human beings sitting in the dark can be a beautiful thing, especially if there are stars to look up at.

(Beats sitting under fluroescents at two am.)

  • electricity sucks

  • You live in a jungle?

  • Ambushcrysis: "electricity sucks"

Vaccums suck. Electricity attracts and repels. It also keeps you from dissolving into an invisible gas of subatomic particles.

What do they teach you people in school these days?

  • Oh, so you made your computer from bamboo and coconut shells I see.

  • ...no it's made out of electricity. *rolls eyes*

  • I'm glad i dont live anywhere nearby a big city.

  • Ant says it all perfectly. This idea strikes the heart of our spirit as human beings living on our planet Earth. The night sky is a mirror to our conciousness.

  • I don't think they thought it was more important, I don't think they thought about it. People still don't think about it. That's what I mean by "heedless." Nobody ever made a conscious choice. Electricity was obviously a good thing, the world now runs on electricity, and that's great. But, as with everything, it had unintended consequences.

The video doesn't imply a solution, it says that the damage is done. Both ant videos are about the inevitability of loss.

And the brave sadness of ants.

  • I AGREE BUT PLEASE MORE ENTHUSYASME!!

  • No worries. I was a bit rude to Tok, but I wrote what would be my answer to what you're saying in a comment on PirateSamGrrr's video (the one that is mistakenly posted as a response to TokDiyel.)

The ant's speech isn't some all out a attack on technology and freedom and so on. It is an expression of a sense of loss and a call for moderation, and for honesty about the value of things we have heedlessly sacrificed.

It's not about throwing away electric lights. It's about paying attention.

  • You are ashamed? You are appalled?

    That's pretty heavy.

I will have to look at the video responses I guess. Who would have guessed people would react so strongly to a such a mild meditation about the meaning of the sky?

Also,i hate to be so annoying but I can't help pointing out that the adjectival phrase "a few" rarely appropriately modifies the plural noun "stars," if you know what I mean.

It's like saying there are a few trees in the rain forest.

  • I believe it's give and take of this matter. Yes, light pollution does have a negative effect on nature. Nevertheless, light (electricity) is a necessity in todays modern world. eg. without light, There would be no street lights to iluminate the road you are driving on therefore leaving one more at risk when conducting a vehicle at night. Another cause would be that airplanes that fly at night would not have the assistance of spotlights for finding nearby runways to land.

  • "One invention creates thousands of PROBLEMS"

  • Whew, I'm kind of relieved this ant wasn't squished in the end.

  • I would agree with the idea that light pollution is a real problem. It sucks not being able to see anything with my telescope because of all the night lights pouring light out into space and wasting electricity at the same time.

There is also the issue of all the night creatures that get all confused because there is still light at night.

My guess is that it won't be solved untill the price of electricity goes way up.

  • well... I don't think that humans believed they were that they were... less than a blip on the universe. before some advancements in technology, everyone believed the world was flat... they thought the sun revolved around THEM and that they were the center of the universe...

    it's

  • great video pinky ..... i am building a boat treehouse in my front yard with sails to block street and neighbor lights, the night sky is so relaxing for your soul and a lost treasure for so many ......

  • i knew pinky is voiced by a male, i knew it.

  • GREAT vid. Peace. We will pay for this abuse of our world.

  • I miss the desert where the sky looks 3D :(

  • Move to a smaller city...problem solved.

  • I thought the ants would have rebelled after Pinky very publicly crushed one of their favorite speakers.

  • Ants are not natural rebels.

By the way light pollution is so bad that a lot of earth-based observatories have a problem with it even if they are on a mountain of in the desert.

Pinky is pretty good at voices, huh?

  • (we) city-dwellers are really missing out on the night sky. It's a shame.

  • I really enjoyed this video. Sometimes I think why do so many people stay awake at night and drive? Is it for work for pleasure? When do people take the time to relax in this sleepless world it seems. I cant even sleep with the lights on at night. My neighbors have their lights on all the time. I just think how much electricity they could save, if they just turned the lights out by 10 pm or so. I still enjoy candle lights, why don't other people do this too.

  • youre right..this is 21 century and we gonna live like 21 century people...

  • why does pinky or who ever the person is just show herself? i mean seriously i agree with some of her videos but sometimes i think shes just doing it for fame. Like she has reasonable facts but she posts them on youtube? why not take it to a news station or something?

  • It's a stylistic decision, I think. Watching cute cartoons is more entertaining than watching the person who is recording the voice. The person recording the voice is probably not the sole holder of ideas. Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's undignified. If you haven't noticed, news stations are pretty crappy and dumbed down for people with short attention spans. Sadly, news stations are generally not a great forum for good discussion.

  • What do you mean they complain too much? It's videos that promote critical thinking regarding important topics. Someone I know likes to characterize Democrats as people who complain. Well if you are someone like that, then you probably have a lot to evaluate about what complaining really is, and who complains too much.

  • I think it would be ridiculous to think that this video is a call against LIGHTS. This is like any poem or short story that represents a theme by talking about things metaphorically. I hate poetry. Anyway, this is just talking about humans getting too caught up in the systematic way of life, and forgetting about the something like life's broader meaning. Understandable by anyone who takes vacations in nature away from busy civilization.

  • yeh ,i love the night sky. Ohh well lets stop complainging. its a waste of both our times lol.

  • Ehh.

In showing herself and going to the news station (which pal, wouldn't be aired ever, I'm sure of it) wouldn't THAT be doing all this for fame. She's trying to express herself and enlighten people through whatever medium possible. YouTube is a way to show others...So her decision not to show herself is logical and reasonable.

  • Wow.

Please where did you get the images from 1:24 to 1:36?

    I'll appreciate any help.

  • very very good stuff

  • Your stuffs brilliant, keep it up.

    peace.

  • Of course with out 'electricity' you wouldn't have images from space such as those you have used, plus you wouldn't have YT either.

The point you have made is a good one, essential even. However, is the solution more about light management? Especially in public places.

  • i thought it was good, makes a point, whether a crucial one or not.... There is a truth, that man is changing this world... one day it will hardly be recognizable, by antiquity. We lose natural wonder, for our deeper desires. Sad, that it seems this will be the prominent

way... though, we are but a cog in existence, and nature will always have the last word

  • please stop pollution please i beg you

  • but the point could be made, that, what is the point of all this advancement? it cannot change us... we are mortal. we simply fasinate ourselves, and toil so hard simply in the name of advancement... while in the end, we aren't even a speck of importance to anything, but ourselves and others. so advancement is really just part of a selfish need, for attention, and self worth... which is perspective.

  • The point of advancement is being able to make a person live possibly to 1000 years old, & to the advancement of technology that we can travel through space to go find other planets. Give us a couple of 1000 years & humans will spread through the galaxy & then through the universe. You think we are just ants to this galaxy yet you forget we are far superior to anything so far. Humans will spread well beyond this planet everyone knows that.

  • Bacteria are superior to humans.

  • the direction humans are going... anything is superior... well said

  • Sheesh people STFU already, this vid was only a reflection on how it was before and all these unneeded arguments sprouted all over the place!

  • I'm surprised how much anger this video has caused. God knows I'm just as much a product of today's generation as anyone else, but is it really so controversial that the author is a bit sad that the sky isn't as vivid now as it was in times past? It's not like this video is casting blame, it's just a bit of reflection. Aren't people entitled to their opinions anymore? Or does everything have to be belittled or argued because their opinions don't match yours?

  • wtf this is S**** I hope that who ever thoght of this S**** gits there soul devouerd by the devil. linken park rocks!!!!! live with it.

    P.s exsept for omish pepole.

  • I think its the larger issues behind Pink show that stirs up the hostility. They are very biased against anything American-remember Americans invented the electric light bulb.

  • i think anyone presented with facts that are not in favor of their blind belief would think the pinky show is biased.

please tell us why you feel this show is biased against america. especially considering the show in itself, is american from the ground up.

  • This bites!!!

  • You're like a kid by wanting to rebel, and get nowhere with it. Keep biting the hand that feeds you.

  • keep kissing the hand that takes food out of your children's mouths. you're like a kid that obeys every convention his/her society ever presented to him.

  • LOl, I understand that you're a dirty mexican that can't control his own government and always complains about it, and you crossed the border illigally. And you try to use big words to sound smart.

  • honestly I think you're sad cause you're so ignorant

  • But your bias shows; you portray them as inferior because they were not on their way to the polluted water, land & air, obesity, mental illnesses, uncontrolled breeding, slums, etc. that you seem to prefer- as the blameless side effects of advanced minds.

  • Whrsthefence,

What was 'astonishing' wasn't the dates, it was that your assertation that life was 'short, brutish and nasty' -for them, but not for the ones that came here and took, rapaciously.

Sum up European history the same way you have North American, & you get a picture at least as incomplete & ugly.

You act like your list is proof that your view (of all those lives) is knowledgable & accurate.

  • But your bias shows; you portray them as inferior because they were not on their way to the polluted water, land & air, obesity, mental illnesses, uncontrolled breeding, slums, etc. that you seem to prefer- as the blameless side effects of advanced minds.

  • you know what i mean dipshit

  • rofl

  • Whrsthefence2007- Your depiction of life here before 1492 is astonishing.

Do you imagine that saying such ridiculous things somehow changes the truth?

Or are you merely hoping to convince others, who prefer to believe rather than learn & understand?

  • This video was featured! Now it hardly gets comments!

  • Maybe due to the 'primitive natives' argument taking over the comments.

I apologize for feeding the flame.

  • people used to be able to look at the stars and say wow. ..... it hasen't been that way for a while now...

  • it is true if you get 80 or so miles from a major city the night sky is beautiful and thats a understatement

  • not as beautiful as it was before electricity, I imagine.I bet there's a visual comparison n the net somewhere

  • The war against Communism will be such that it cannot be conducted in a knightly fashion. This struggle is one of ideologies and racial differences and will have to be conducted with unprecedented, unmerciful and unrelenting harshness."

  • ok guy

  • wow, nice videos.. so real.

  • OUR DISTANT ANCESTORS, watching the stars, noted five did more than rise and set in solid procession, as the so-called "fixed" Stars did. These five had a curious and complex motion. Over the months they seemed to wander slowly among the stars. Sometimes they did loops. Today we call them planets, the Greek word for wanderers. It was, i imagine, a peculiarity our ancertors could related to.

We know now that the planets are not stars, but others worlds, gravitationally lashed to the Sun.

  • you must to search what's goin on after Christopher Columbus dicoveried the Americas, Who was MONTEZUMA? the chif Aztec indians, he wasn't stupid 'cause he knew that the Spnish come in with the shipwar to extinguish them, actually were a lot battles among them fainally the Spanish with Carlos cortez won the war cause they got the gunpowder , if the Aztecs would have it the gunpowder in that time, The spanish never, listen would never colonize this lands, now it is more clearly than the water.

  • I will admit your video is very nice. But do you have any soloution to get rid of this problem? Don't complain about something unless you have some idea on how to fix it.

  • ...The sky is completely black; and against the background of this black sky the stars appear somewhat brighter and more distinct. The earth has a very characteristic, very beautiful blue halo, which is seen well when you odserve the horizon, there is a smooth color transition from tender blue, to blue, to dark blue and purple, and then to the completely black color of the sky, it is a beautiful transition.

They cannot openly admit that an entire people--especially one comprising nearly 300 million, who enjoy all the freedoms--can be mistaken. But in their hearts these intellectuals do not accept the principle of one person, one vote In fact, they have a special derogatory word for anyone who acts on this assumption: "populist
