@CookinCO I don't know that you could call ahead but she lives in Kahakuloa fulltime now that Uncle Guy retired. They used to live part time on Oahu and part time in Kahakuloa when he was still working. Aunty Lorraine really does put Aloha into everything she prepares for every visitor and Kahakuloa village is one of very few places left in Hawaii that is unadulterated paradise.
Just got back from Maui and we somehow ended up at Lorraine's. It was the best part of the whole trip! She is the best and undoubtedly has the friendliest attitude. Our visit with Lorraine was the most pleasant experience of customer service we had and she did nothing more than be herself
Lorraine's was the highlight our trip to Maui. She has the "aloha spirit". Everyone mentioned her banana bread, shave ice and other goodies but failed to mention her banana cream pie and coconut cream pie...they are the best! If you are kind to her she will show you her great view, pineapple, coconut and quava trees and share a bit of them too! You won't be sorry you visited her because she makes you feel like family.
Julia's banana bread. Julia's is NOT worth the drive out there but Lorraine's is, and her banana bread is even better than her shave ice. Her shop is behind her house, which is well-marked on the left side of the highway before you reach Julia's bread stand. When you leave Lorraine's, do yourself a favor and go left out of her driveway and continue along the highway another mile, uphill, and stop in at Kaukini Gallery, which you can see perched up on the hill from Lorraine's.
They are now open 365 days a year, barring supply runs or medical appointments -- she recommends calling to make sure she'll be there if you're making a pilgrimage just to her place. She is located on highway 340 in Kahakuloa Village, upper west Maui: from Lahaina, you take highway 30 north past Nakalele blowhole & the road becomes highway 340 and also passes the Olivine pools. After that the road is a hairy one-lane for 1 1/2 miles to Kahakuloa Village, where you'll see signs for
Lorraine bakes her legendary banana bread daily, and in addition to shave ice she & her husband also offer handmade jerky, toasted coconut, lilikoi jelly, pies, and banana bread ice cream sandwiches.
We used to go here all the time, a hidden treasure found by Bob
