Brother, I have put your story in the bank, so that it may grow and breed success within my mind. When the time comes, I will unleash its boundless primal energy on my life pursuits.
Good work'. Nice balance. I'm a C 5-6 quad myself. Be cool if you could share this with our members on pushrim.com It's a social network for family, friends and survivors of spinal injuries.Tnx for sharing.
@BoZo85PL, i found my way here from chris colwell's Ted Talks @ Dubai presentation. it is definitely a boost to see how hard you have worked and continue to. i am an L3 through to S2, and walk with canadian crutches, and have periodic bouts in and out of the wheelchair - but since i have been on SSDI/and Medicare, i have no further injuries, just the normal ups and downs. keep your eyes on the prize! thank you so much for letting us into your life and sharing it with us. peace.
2.@cellphonevictim. my parents were advised NOT to have me placed in the 'system' becuase this would only give me a sense of entitlement, and my life would only be what i made of it - even though i was told NOT to have children, and i would be in a wheelchair permanently by the age of 30. until i finally won my placement as disabled by SSDI in 1999, i never had regular P.T, or regular Medicine, and sometimes no doctors. i now have a complicated medical DX. i was reborn in 1999, and with the ADA
@cellphonevictim. i was declared disabled at 17, when the JRA took hold of my lungs and my heart, and i was paralyzed. that was in 1972. the only thing they had was aspirin therapy, 30-40 and the agonizing wax baths and big basin whirlpool. and i too was not only sent home with
"some exercises' but a list of vitamins to take - and get this, not to take D becuase it would make me want to eat. my very first pain meds were for my stomach, Belladonna in drop form.
Great video. I'm a therapist. U are a perfect example of why I luv my job. I luv helping people get back as much of their life as possible. Keep up the good work.
good for u dude. i didn't get much pt after my accident. i have kaiser and they show you some exercises and send u home to do them on your own. sucks. i need regular pt along with pool therapy and weights and stretching. some i can do myself but most no. cuz i can't exercise regularly on my own, it shortens my life span sure. it varies. there are vietnam vets in chairs that are still around. and they are in their 60's. gotta stay as active as possible and keep the weight down big time.
it depends on your level and your age of your accident. i was told that average age was 40 for a c5/c6 and i was 23 years old when i had my accident. so i guess i have about 18 years left give or take. so i really hope the stem cells hurry up.
@BoZo85PL Ok, thanks. Are you currently receiving stem cell treatment then? I thought the treatment was available, so what are you waiting for exactly? *sorry for my ignorance*
You should have the Rocky theme song to this video.. your a true fighter. I cannot believe you dont have insurance though. Mdicare kicks in after the first yr I think. But before that, you qualify for medicaid. and that pays for PT/OT. Have you done fundraisers? We did one to raise money for a handicap van, and a lady donated hers because her husband had just past away and she didn't need it. A friend of ours had one donated by a local dealership. You should do a fundraiser.
Awsome improvements! Dont stop when the insurance stops ok? Because there is going to come a point when insurance says no more. If you dont use it, you WILL lose it. Your so luck that you didn't hit the C-2 or C-3 area that controls your breathing. My son (Justin) has more issues like pneumonia, and now has a 6 month life expectancy. With no pt/ot he gets sick alot more.
@msteele740 We have a standing frame now.. but the contractures in his feet make it impossible to get into. Plus he hs NO trunk or head control. ANd the vent makes it hard too because it take 3 people to get him into it.. I am a single mom.. we have nurses, but still takes more effort and more people. He has had pneumonia probably 10 times. They give him 6 mo to live. I am trying to sell the standing chair now.
Hi. I feel your pain. I'm a c5 c6 incomplete also. I watched your video over and over again. I'm walking with a walker a little. When I woke from a coma for two weeks I could only move my right hand and that was it. Now I'm standing myself and walking with a walker a little. Just watching your videos helps. To see people in the same situtaion as we are helps alot. The best thing we can do is stay positive. Just wanted to say I feel your pain. Stay strong and God bless.
I am so happy. I am truly so happy that I found this video. It seemed as though you sent me a friend request but I never really check it so I missed out on your videos for so long. I am also a C5-C6. Your video has giving me so much strength into my number one gaol; walking. Thank you for this video sir. I am going to start PT/OT in under a week and I am going to film it and post them in a montage like you did so I can see all of the progress I make. Thank you again for posting your story.
