  • Thumbs up if you are going to experience or already experienced the wrath of Hurricane Irene in the August of 2011

  • MY name Gloria LOL

  • The wind sounds so evil

  • Not bad for 1985 that is.Lol.

  • This so grasping, look and enjoy....

  • I was born September 26, 1985, smack in the middle of the hurricane. Pretty cool to see what was going on that day!

  • Exactly 10 years after this I was born lol. Im a youngster :)

But yeah it is very nice that you recorded this because I find it interesting to watch stuff before I was born for some reason lol.

  • I was 15 years old when Gloria happened. I lived on The Eastern Shore of Virginia, and even though the eye stayed out over the ocean, we had 90 mph gust where I lived. We had 7 large trees fall in our yard, three of them on our house during the storm. It was a little spooky, but I loved it.

  • I would love to be back in the 80's holding one of those monster camera/VCR sets filming storms such us this. :D

  • I wasn't too thrilled with all the different (and heavy) pieces of equipment that went into it... especially when traveling... lol. But, the inconvenience was definitely worth being able to document all these storms.

  • WOW 1:03-1:06 you can really see the wind... thats crazy

  • you getting ready 4 the 2010 hurricane season in the atlantic just in case a hurricane or tropical storm or depression comes close to wherever u r filming so u can capture it on film if so plz post em on youtube

  • Wow,

    orderly vinds!!!!!5*

  • Hmmmm. Can i ask which is the most powerful hurricane u have met b4?

  • Hi there. In terms of the strongest winds I've personally experienced, that would probably be Hurricane Hugo (1989)... however, both Andrew (1992) and Gilbert (1988) were stronger storms than Hugo when I was in them but, in both instances, my location didn't expereince the strongest winds they were producing (Andrew came close though).

  • I mean about the wind speed like Hurricane Hugo was about 150mph ( u said it )

  • Are you still going to upload some more old footage?

  • Hi Gavin. Yes, I'm currently working on remastering other footage from the 1985 and 86 seasons.

  • Wow- how many times have I been to this exact spot for Nor'easters and even hurricane Dennis in 1999? I cannot believe you were there in '85 for this hurricane. Amazing job. There should be a hurricane chaser hall of fame for people like you- seriously. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks, Mark!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the clip... I figured, of all the chasers out there, you would definitely be most familiar with the locations in this clip. I just can't believe it's already been almost a quarter century since this chase! Anyway, thanks again.

  • Great video Mike. I love the sound of that wind. Nice little barometer you had there as well. Do you still have it.

  • Thanks so much, Steve! Gloria's wind noise was definitely amazing! I do still have my old aneroid barometer packed away somewhere, however, the one in this video was actually Jim's. He said that this was the same barometer he had during Cleo and Betsy, so it had already been "battle tested" by the time Gloria came around...lol.

  • I remember Gloria well. I used to live on the south shore of Long Island where it made landfall, but winds were down to 80-90mph then. Can't believe it's nearly 25 years ago now...great footage, thanks for posting.

  • Thanks... I'm glad you enjoyed the footage. I'm having a hard time believing that almost a quarter centrury has passed too... it doesn't seem possible...lol.

  • Thanks so much!!! I'm glad you liked the footage. It sounds like you've had some incredible storm experiences too! One of these days I'm gonna have to get down there to try my hand at chasing some Australian cyclones... you guys have had some amazing ones.

  • Fantstic WOW... Sounds just like a commuter train.

  • Thanks so much, Chris! Yeah... Gloria's wind noise was absolutely insane! One of these days we'll be listening to that sound agan... lol.

  • I can't decide which sounds the best.... Hugo or this lol.

  • HAHA... I'm not sure either! Overall, I think all the different layered tones that you can hear in Gloria's winds sound better... but then, we were right next to some huge utility towers and the high-tension lines really helped produce all the different sounds. With Hugo, when we were outside, that roaring was just pure wind... I can't even imagine what Hugo would have sounded like if there had been big powerlines close by.

  • I hope so Michael! Where ever, when ever, I'll be there!

  • Wow Michael! Thank you for this, I want to see (hear) one! On my bucket list!

  • Hi Linda! Thank you so much... maybe 2010 will be the year we're all in one together. =^D Have a happy New Year!

  • Video document historic, Michael!.. I have rarely seen the temperate vegetation hit by hurricane winds. This terrific noise is amazing, thanks for sharing :D

  • Thanks so much, Roy! I'm glad you like the footage. Hurricanes in the mid-latitudes definitely look different than in the deep tropics.

  • These pines can withstand hurricane similar to tropical vegetation, Michael? Resistant noticeable.. Happy New Year!

  • It really depends on the type of pine and how strong the storm is. Australian pine uproots and snaps pretty easily... but common southern Slash pine is very sturdy and usually takes quite a bit of wind, 120mph or more before breaking. In violent wind scenarios, like with Hugo's landfall in South Carolina, whole forests of pine were entirely destroyed.

  • I'll have to dig out those old audio tapes sometime and see what I can do with them! I can't believe it's almost been 25 years! WOW

  • Thank you for contacting me about your video post. The wind was so cool sounding. even though I couldn't see a lot I just rested my chin on the palm of my hand and listened. The barometer is very cool too..as is what sounded like weather radio with a real, human voice. :-).

  • Thanks, Steve! Yeah those old 1st and 2nd generation video cameras back in the mid 80's didn't do to well in low-light scenarios...lol. Whatever was in the car's headlights was about all it could pick up. But Gloria's audio was definitely amazing... still some of my all time favorite wind noise. And yeah, this was back in the good 'ole days of an actual person recording the NOAA radio broadcasts... you can actually hear urgency in her voice when she says... "DO NOT VENTURE OUTDOORS!"

  • Don't know if you knew , but I was one of those who made NOAA Weather Radio Recordings. We sat in a special sound proof room with a "dashboard" of various tapes from which to select ..I especially liked creating my own weather synopsisi in plain english for the 'masses'..it set the creativity flame aglow..HOWEVER, my boss deeply frowned on it. there was something about my straying ever so slightly from the straight and narrow he did not like. Tough. I quit!...LOL (seriously)

  • LOL... I never knew that! Did you get to save any of your old recordings? I always remember Alvin Samet at the NHC who had a very distinctive voice and used to record a lot of the TWO's and public advisories. I still have a lot of those on tape.

  • Didn't have 'device' for which to save anything. It was fun though. A few times just per chance, I'd go to the mall after work and go into radio shack; someone would be listening to their weather radio for sale and their I'd be..LOL. "The Forecast, For Northwest Ohio....."..it a very distinctive tone I never use in normal speech...only for weathe radio ;-)

  • Extremely impressive footage for 24 years ago!

You've had a quiet season for once huh?

  • Thanks, Graham! Re-mastering the old footage is always a challenge, especially the night shots. But, it seems to have come out relatively OK this time. Yeah, 2009 was definitely a slow year for all types of severe weather over here... we'll see if that changes in 2010.

  • Wow sweet video!!

  • Thanks so much, Derek! Glad you liked it.

  • Awesome footage Michael!!! Around my birthday too! I was a baby, lol!

  • Thanks so much, Nathan! I still can't believe it's coming up on 25 years since this chase...lol.

  • Great footage! Gloria made land fall on my 13th birthday and since I didn't have a video camera yet, I audio taped the storm instead, lol. This storm, and the severe storm that hit my area in Queens, NY a month earlier were the catalysts for my obsession with the weather.

  • Thanks, Scott! Glad you liked it. Gloria was definitely a key event for a bunch of chasers, myself included. I still remember reading Jack 'Thunderhead' Corso's intercept account, in StormTrack. I'd love to hear your audio recording some time!

  • nice footage!

  • Thanks so much!
