Just realized how to do it to make automatic sugar cane farm. can't explain it though sorry. the picture is to hard for words. basically the redstone leads to a redstone torch that is off cause the boat is on pad. the torch turns the piston on and off. water is flowing over the SC and to the side. when SC reaches 3 high the water goes to area with the boat, lift it up, and turns torch on, thus extending piston. the piston breaks the SC and everything goes back to normal.

@Jsonicb00m Etho didn't design a water sensor, just a BUD switch. It uses a water sensor, but in combination with a sensor for block updates, and also an automatic reset
