It's not that risky if you do it with a regular razor, but I wouldn't take buzzers or clippers to it, THAT is way too risky. It's a real pain to cut it back the first time with a razor if you've let it grow big and bushy (mine was), but once you get it cut out then just do it once every few days and it will be easy each time. Some guys don't have to do this but I do, because it's like sideburns back there for me. :X

You also can protect your hair with a tape and shave thin hair under the tape with clippers.
