Taxes are a society choice. Québec has a more socialist approach and with it comes many services that many don't have. When you look at taxes, only blinded ones will look simly at governement taxes. What comes from the public sector should also constitute taxes, but those are never taken into consideration when people compare taxes paid from province to province, country to country.

greater Montreal probably has over half of Quebec's economy and people and if the city had a referendum on separation it would never even be close to winning.

Yet you can still look at the UN's list of best countries when it comes to quality of life. They take many variables into consideration, some of them being income and employement.

New England is a colection of states in the North East section of my country. And I disagree, as Florida blows, my good man. Sorry I hate it. Amusingly enough, I am originally from Jackson, Tennessee which is the Blue part of my home Red state, and spent some years in Shreveport, Louisiana.

My apologies. I just got back from 2 weeks in Auteuil and I've never dealt with such rancid body odor and people going out of their way to be rude. There is no excuse for such poor hygiene and blatant disrespect for visitors. Soap, water and common courtesy were in short supply. My visits to Dublin, London, Copenhagen, and even NY were absolutely delightful and the people were warm, welcoming & relatively odor free. If they don't want money from tourism then post a "Piss Off" sign @Orly.

If I'm following you, you're comparing a part of small city, cause Auteuil is a part of a bigger city called Laval, to London, Dublin, Copenhagen and NY O_o WTF!!! At least compare to Montreal City or Quebec City. Quebec is a HUGE province, so if you want to do a good comparaison with Auteuil compare it to Odessa or Dublin (Texas this time ;o)) or Bisbee.

Indeed, English Québécois can send their children to English school, the restriction affects only francophones and immigrants, who are well informed of this law before coming here but still make the choice to. If they want nothing to do with it, they can freely pick any of the other provinces to move to. Moreover, college level education and beyond is accessible in English to all.

Also, Switzerland is much more severe than Québec is on is immigrants when it comes to language. We are talking about a country with 4 official languages here.

Nothing about this whole paragraph is even true.
Québec hasnt been the most taxed state in NA in a while. It remains very taxed however, but along with it comes a ton of services that other provinces/states dont have. We made the choice to nationalise services, that means higher taxes, but that does NOT mean we pay more, as we would actually pay more for the same services from public corporations.

But what couldn't be more wrong about your comment is that Québec's cost of living is higher than anywhere else in NA. It is the absolute opposite. Housing in BC costs about triple what it costs here, go rent and appartment in Toronto and expect to pay a damn whole lot more than in Montreal, education and health care in the US is extremely expensive compared to here. Salaries are lower (than the average), but certainly not lowest. We make up for it with our lower cost of life.

First of all Québec is not the most taxed state in North America anymore. If you dont remember the huge tax cut granted by Harper to Charest before the elections, it contributed largely to it.
Secondly, and most importantly, Québec is the least taxed state by private corporations in North America. Because it made the choice to nationalise its servives. We get a lot more services for our taxes while in other states, they pay public corporations (usually much higher amounts) instead.

Québec and Mexico is a good comparison, theres only a little per GDP capita 30,000$ that separates them.
Taxes are a society choice. Québec has a more socialist approach and with it comes many services that many don't have. When you look at taxes, only blinded ones will look simly at governement taxes. What comes from the public sector should also constitute taxes, but those are never taken into consideration when people compare taxes paid from province to province, country to country.

How much do license plates cost in the other provinces, what about electricity, out of many examples. It is true that a substential part of Québécois dont pay income taxes and I believe it is as much as 42% or something similar.
Something akin to 4% of the population is on welfare ;/ and 93% is employed.

I live in Montreal, and it's a fantastic place to live. It's beautiful, and filled with people from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds. The arts scene is really happening, and there are four universities, which means the city is filled with beautiful women. Every spring, they all begin to dress really enticingly. The mountain is beautiful.

Maxime Bernier was largely incompetant. But even more so was whoever put him there, and kept him there, mistake after mistake, when he had no experience whatsoever, solely to have a Québec MP represented on one of the top Canadian ministries.
As it appears, Harper and most federal governement felt they need to buy out Québec. Aren't they the ones that should be blamed.

Quebec has about the same sized economy as Alberta but 2.5 times more people.
As an independant country Quebec would have a nominal gdp a bit bigger than Finlands.
Without Quebec Canada would have over 26 million people and an economy larger than Brazil's (nominal gdp over 1200 billion dollars us), and still be a top 10 trading nation in the world.

I'm not sure what numbers you look at to claim Alberta's economy is globally the same size as Québec's. Certainly by capita however, they make more.
Québec also has a substentially more important economy than Finland. But I like the compararison anyway, Finland does compare to Québec a lot.
The real question however is, why does it matter, since when does bigger mean better?
The UN classifies Iceland, certainly a very tiny country, has the best country on the planet to live in.

Yet you can still look at the UN's list of best countries when it comes to quality of life. They take many variables into consideration, some of them being income and employement.
Iceland is first and is very small, Norway second and about half of Québec's size, Ireland is 5th, same deal, Sweden is 6th, Switzerland is 7th, Finland is 11th.

To take back your argument, as of right now, Québec has no say in international forums. Being a recognized nation certainly is an improvement over nothing.
Québec would never be big enough to be part of something like the G8. Hell, would Canada even retain its spot after a Québec secession? Chances are they'd use the occasion to pump it up to a G12 to validates its continual presence in it. Spain knocks on Canada's door when it comes to economy importance amongst "developped countries".

What would be Québec's economy without Montréal is a very moot point considering Montréal is part of Québec.
There will not be a referendum concerning solely Montreal, at least not until several years after a possible Québec secession, neither is partition ever going to be a possibility. And I believe you under-estimate the separatist support if you actually go beyond the island in Greater Montreal.

I'm not saying Canada wouldn't be doing well without Québec, I am actually absolutely convinced it would.
As for Spain, its nominal GDP is pretty much the same as Canada's and was predicted to surpass it. Now things might have changed with the new oil "shortage" reality. Without Québec, a substential part of Canada, Spain easily passes by, as does Brazil & Russia, when it comes to that measurement at least.

All I am saying, is that Canada's global economical importance is challenged with the loss of Québec. Would it really belong in the G8 anymore after such a loss. Especially considering it would put it behind countries that aren't, Spain was my example, although it is not even considered as a possible futur member (unlike China & Brazil). Québec, while not having Alberta's growth, is quite a big chunk of Canada's economy. For someone who believes bigger is better, I suppose you agree.

You might want to reconsider calling Ontario rich. It is on the verge of receiving equalization payments. Its heavy manufacturing industry (similar to Québec's, actually) is not in the perfect of shape.
Theres been speculation that the unemployement rate in Ontario might be higher than Québec's as soon as I believe 2010 for the first time. While the two have a similar economy, this projection is based on Québec managing to save more jobs with its heavy nationalisation of many systems.

Ontario's gdp growth is still expected to be a bit less than 2 % which is about the same for all of Canada.
When I said rich I was mostly referring to gdp size, Ontario's is about 600 billion Quebec's is about 290 billion.
