You guys all seem to be forgetting that Descartes was getting his mind raped out of him as he fought the ELS the last time. You'd think that might have affected his performance.
It depends on the level of effect. In this case, Descartes was using the worse possible weapon in this case because his MS had effectively over 100 points to attack. If even 1 of them goes down to them, that hinders the rest of them and makes it even easier to bring down. Basically, with each drone infected, it made it that much easier to shut him down. The first fight was a flawless victory because they didn't learn yet. The second one, you can see them bring down the drones.
despite of being the most powerful machine among others in the movie(OR MAYBE AMONG MACHINES IN THE ENTIRE GUNDAM HISTORY!) equipped with 21 GN Tau Drives,140 GN fangs,, GN field, Trans-Am system together with its pilot (which is an innovade), but still it didn't survive on those such a mere space shit ELS and it was little bit of shock cuz in the movie it was the only trump card of ESF then sudenly it was being assimilated!

@trunksomega It would be more powerful if it didn't focus entirely on the 140 Fangs, that was its major flaw as they would get assimilated fast like they did. As for 21 GN Drives, only 6 ever powered the Mobile Armor, the 14 others remained as part of the GN-Fangs, and 1 as a backup. As for why the Gadeleza didn't survive through it, even with a GN Field, physical objects can puncture the field hence why the Exia, 00, and etc had physical GN-Blades. So again, this was just a MA meant to die.
The Gadelaza was probably made in mind to totally destroy a enemy with it's fang bits before it could even become a threat. If the enemy was a MS (or even a Gundam Type MS) it would've been totaled by it's massive fire power (through the fangs alone) and who knew that they'd have to create a MA to defend against assimilating aliens?
Although this unit was much like the Destroy (from GSD), more of them were used in the next conflict, by enhanced super soldiers.

I think to Descartes that he had special abilities like on setsuna that can really wipe-out with those so many enemies all at once especially Gadelaza have abnormal numbers of beam emitters and powerful GN drives but still it so impossible for him to be defeated by just only a one piece of big ELS shit!
Why they didn't make more of those suits? The ELS would've have stand a change against an army of those.
