I have taken the MD-90 s about 10 times and all i can say : everytime before tochdown it makes me say hurraaaaaaay!!!!! we r falling down yeaeaeaeaeah!!! XDDD
The MD-80s flaps are VERY strong due to the airplanes very small wings. Its normal to have power even for a landing and the MD-80 loves to rattle and shake on takeoff and landing. For a Super80 great landing!
It was harder than the video shows. I've experienced hundreds of landings on the Super 80, and this one was certainly harder than most. That being said, it was by design. As others have mentioned, the winds were gusting, and they're supposed to set it down firm.
I didn't see anything wrong with this landing to be honest, good approach and a solid touchdown. MD-80 being as long as it is makes it look like it is going at a downward angle more than it is. He touched down after the piano keys so was just fine. Looked like he was battleing a lot of winds but all in all your still alive, a good landing is one you can still walk away from.
i worked at the airport theyre landing at for 2 years at UPS and IAS..even drove terminal buses. kno every plane sound by heart now lol..yea the MD 80's are the loudest ones out there. more so than the 777, 757, 767, md-11, even the L-1011. Yon can here those things forever
yea i worked at intergrated and the UPS hub they have around the corner also. i also did package handlin at UPS. and i even drove terminal buses for terminal link lol. i did too much shit at the airport bro lol. started workin out there at 20 now im 23..went and got an office job lol. i heard intergrated is fallin on sum bad financial times..one of the main reasons i wanted to leave there. i worked with the KOREAN contract when i was there
Throttle up, is standard procedure on the MD-80's, because the wing area is so small, its hard to keep aloft at slow speeds, its very efficient at high speeds, but difficult to control at low, so you need extra throttle to keep this bird in the air.
I spoke with an MD80 first officer over christmas about it. He told me the autothrottle is very sensitive in so that it may see the plane is 2 or 3 knots slow and kick in a crap load of power and then overshoot so it throttles down and continues until it hits the desired speed. I think its atually exciting. lol.
Good video, I like it when they leave the FA welcoming you to the city you are arriving in. I hate when they cut it off before the welcome announcement.
nothing strange here... as said earlier, winds will do that to your approach... never float your flare with winds lol... super 80, my favorite U.S. domestic airliner
i love flying in and out of dfw its so fun and a grate view of the cowboys stadium.

RichT08 2 years ago
Is it a hard landing? I don t think it is that hard... :S

no i meantg the landing i was on was hard

cool video. I have to agree that keeping the power on that late was little strange as normally the power starts coming off about 50 ft off the deck,
Airlineguy427 2 years ago
They probably also throttle up the power because at landings the plane is very close to its stall speed I would think.

The wings sure seem close to the ground. Just one of the "Super" things about the MD-80.

Yeah I have had this happen many times going into Lubbock.
Casie629 3 years ago
As said previously, I'd expect that it was due to some winds, rather than a "near stall." But who knows?
Longhornmaniac8 3 years ago
@Longhornmaniac8 the pilots know
MCHIBullDog 2 months ago
why in the approaching the pilot keep throttling up the engines till touch the runaway?
Thanks
ddlcwb 3 years ago
probably because the plane was too low or they were not fast enough to land,,,,, or maybe they were decending too fast

Good landing, that is how they are supposed to land in certain conditions, put it down firm.
rbm7101 4 years ago
Of course he was throttling up...shifting winds on approach. The landing would have been a lot bumpier if he didn't.
apolloflying2006 4 years ago
That would make sense. :) We were kind of "all over the place on final," makes sense that the winds were having some fun.
