Let's be honest:

1) USA is broke and cannot afford any "shield" which could be easily penetrated anyway with the modern Russian missiles (e.g. like Topol-M or RS-24)

2) In case of deployment of US missiles threatening Russia in any way then Russia would respond by placing its missiles in Cuba and/or Venezuela.

And just like during the Cuban crisis of 1962 US would then have to withdraw its missiles (back then it was from Turkey) while Russia would not install its rockets in Cuba.

The RS-24 missile that Russia tested on May 29, 2007 is a multiple-warhead version of the Topol-M and not a new missile.

The problem is not an ICBM Nuclear Strategic threat but a Tactical one. Inorder to protect Local theater assets and objectives, you need air support.

The current threat to US and NATO Air Power is not the old "MAD" weapons like the RS-24, It's the Anti Air and Surface ones like the SA-21's.
