Vtec Is a race cam that only comes on at certain RPM. TL's only have intake side vtec, until GSR's Type R's and Si's Look at the lobs on a vtec cam there are 3 not 2.
... forth gear thats all it have on the 99 model. i never got to go top speed on this car but it feels like it could do at least 130 mph who know maybe a little more. I have so much fun with this car because it looks and is a conservative looking BUT! with a kick ass engine. the street races that i remember most are an old porsche boxter, Lexus IS350 yes 350!, and Audi S6 was one whit 450 hp and Twin Turbo i remember reading about it and a civic SI i the lates one it was on new years day...
Is true, the TL VTEC kicks in at 3.5 rpm yes 3.5!! and this is a 99' model nothing done to it completely stock. when i first drove this car was ok a little firm the wheel then i engaged the transmission in to "manual mode" WOW what a difference this car blast it way quickly i can't really say if it lacks performance in on gear or another BUT DAM!! this first and second gear are fast but you keep going to third and the VTEC kicks in like 2 secs later and WOW all the way to 125 mph then...
I still don't know why some Honda?acura owners think VTEC is spelled 'vtech'. It say's 3.2 VTEC under your hood so you should know better. Nice car though xD.
j rad im bout to get a 2002 acura 3.2 tl but not the type s, would you say is still a good car that has good preformance, sorry i dont know much about cars but im starting to get into them
No problem. This is a very good car and the performance is not bad at all for a vehicle this size. These cars have a lot of torque which means a lot of low end power. The type s has a bit more horsepower but i have also heard that the type s does not offer as good of a ride as the normal TL which is expected due to its stiffer suspension and bigger wheels. Overall the stock 3.2TL is an extremely well executed luxury car that offers you plenty of performance when you want it.
Truthfully I am on the third transmission in my car. But these cars have a seven year 109,000 mile warranty on the transmissions so they have replaced them without any issues. And every time they've replaced it they have given me a brand new fully loaded Acura TSX loaner for free. But my car has never left me on the side of the road and the car other than that runs awesome. But overall I absolutely love my car!
@scottv holds up like shit love the car to death but have replaced the tranny in my 2003 but it does come with a warranty on the replacement. drives like a dream fingers crossed
hey, my dad has the 2003 Acura 3.2TL too, (not type-s) He doesn't drive it hard, but how does it handle and stuff? I am going to drive it very soon, and i don't know what to expect.. Is it fast? How fast can it go 0-60km? How is it around turns and stuff... My friend has a 2001 Nissan Maxima SE 20th Anniversary edition, and he keeps telling me that his car is faster, and has better handling because of the thick rubber and stuff like that, is he right? Or is this Acura better?
I drive an Acura 3.2 TL and it handles great. I haven't been able to test 0-60 or anything too wild (heavy amount of cops in my area). I did a quick test and got about 7/8 sec. I've read it's about 7.4 sec.
the Type-s has the same egine. you just need to get a chip to set the hp and revs higher. anyways the type-s is only about a second faster in 0-60 and you have to rev the piss out of the egine to really feel any more power. hope this helps
Just a chip wont turn a TL-P engine into a TL-S... And the TL-P runs the 1/4 in the high 16's, a TL-S mid-high 14's.. 2sec is alot of ground to make up at the track.
The VTEC power band starts at 5k in a TL-P and redlines at 6200rpm. The TL-S has a bigger VTEC power band (for greater speeds) from 5k-6700rpm..
the vtec def kiks in at 4500 and if you put in the manual mode it will let you rev all the way up to 6900 ( off of 7000) it. the manual mode is way faster. lets you rev up to 6900 vs. 6200. it has much more vtech, plus the rpms are always above 4500 - that always in the vtec.
"J" motor series Vtec kick in at 3.5K rpm and the Vtec they got is called Economic Vtec not Performance Vtec like civic DOHC, integra DOHC, prelude H22, RSX K series and NSX. the J series Vtec help you achive the power but you won't suffer on gas economy that what SOHC V6 Vtec about.
No They dont its 4.5k for the 03 TL-P and 5k for the TL-S. You should know that. You have seen my vid. You can hear the vtec kick in at 5k.
The Vtec system is the same. Its the cams that differ DOHC vs SOHC. If they made the J series with DOHC it would have to much power and get bad gas mileage.
By the way if I run my car into the vtec powerband on every shift I would only get like 22 or 23mpg. If im running the car at high speeds 100+ I get like 13-14mpg
Even tho the J series is only a SOHC its still faster than the DOHC engines you listed. (exept the NXS)
The K series is a nice motor very good when it comes to mods but stock for stock i'll burn them with my J32A2 same with the H22 prelude. 275hp makes it kinda easy for me LOL
That is not true and i'm starting to think something is not right here. My TL VTEC kicks in at 3.5 rpm not 4.5 nor 5 rpm. why yours is different why does it take longer to kick it?? if you have one.
Mine is a simple 99' model and it only haves 4 gears unlike yours that haves 5 gears or i think 6 if is the type S model. I don't understand why would your car been the type S model kicks it so late? Man... all i can think of is since my car is only 4 gears is just functions like that to compensate but then again, it doesn't have the top speed of either the regular TL with 5 gears nor the type S model. i Guess... By the way it seems to me that your car judging by the vid that it kicks in at 4.5
Well the 4 speed would be the diff. In 03 you can only get a AT tranny with the sport shift. You can do a 6spd MT swap. Na its 5k I see it happen about 20 times a day lol
they are actually all (or pretty much all) Vtec. I honnestly dont understand why ppl are like ''oh i got a vtec in my civic''.. did you know that u can get like the shittiest little 4banger piece of shit like 1.6 or 1.8 (whatever they are) and its still a vtec... so wether be it a 1.8 or 2.2 i still laugh...
they're all the same though, vtec only means that the higher RPMs ur going more valves are going on each piston... its nothing extraordinary, it was actually invented to save gas or something fuel consumption and people made it sound like it's a race engine... ppl say they feel the vtec, but look at any other cars of the same caliber, they have all valves going simultaniously = a bigger rush than feeling a tiny bit more push when all valves are working. anyways i've gone too far,
@vonfred54 Thanks man for all the people who think I'm an idiot.....Most honda engines have a great sound period....It doesn't take VTEC to obtain a refined intake and exhaust note....
i have a 2000 TL an i like it. 0-60 is about seven n a half sec. only thing is that is has a very soft suspension so cornering the car dips pretty bad. but id put my money on the TL vs. the nissan because both are heavy cars but the TL has a little bit more power.

Why would you rev to 6900rpm??? Thats way past redline. Keep that up and you will need a new tranny in no time.
Your right the TL-P's vtec starts at 4500rpm the TL-S is 5k
The rpm's arent always above 4500, only 1st-3rd are. When you hit 4th the TL-P and S turn into slugs until you reach the vtec
Do you own a TL??
