I expected this movie to have a fucking point other than "You suck for choosing to watch a violent movie." What kind of presumptive pretentious bullshit point is that? I didn't think the ending was retarded at all. For me, the whole point of rewinding was playing around with the fact that we always want a "happy ending" and for the bad guy to bite the dust. Instead, when that small sigh of relief comes, he picks up a remote and lets us watch the scene re-enacted, now with the outcome the viewer didn't wish for. basically, this movie is like a cinematic experiment by Haneke.
I absolutely LOVE this film. I must say, in general I agree with critics, but for me this was an example of when I don't. I absolutely loved the tension, use of dark comedy and music. Also what the brutality of the movie really says about human nature, which is that violence has become pornographic in its nature. I thought the acting was solid too, actually I left the theater blown away. only to look it up and see the reviews it had been getting. what the hell! great movie, smart and powerful.
Also it kind of made the movie pointless,while B4 I was either on the edge of my seat or laughing(eggs scene),after the remote rewind I just increduously shook my head and thought wow,that's indescribably stupid,he had me drawn in&just blew it,dropped the movie2 an average 2star violent piece of crap,or a little above b/c of Pitt,but nevertheless, took what could've been a 4star movie& destroyed it.Some left the theater,most laughed&made comments of it's stupidity, only retards try&rationlize it
Well you are entitled to your opinion, I think he made plenty of mockeries already. The picking of the child to kill and them succeeding is just one, after that, it'd probably really happen that an uninjured mother would blow one of them away.

I know a girl who struggles with a psychopathic disorder. I met her for the first time when she was 8. It's pretty sad. I had always thought only adults struggled with psychopathic disorders. I didn't know children could struggle with them too. It made me completely rethink what "psychopath" really was. People should be educated on how to help kids with psychopathic disorders, to help prevent horrible crimes like this from happening.

@32Rainking I disagree. I think that Haneke makes a point of mocking the audience that can't get enough of sadism and pointless horror in cinema. So he takes his film, successfully involves the audience in the murder of this family by breaking the fourth wall, and then works on chipping away any hope of a happy ending whatsoever. Just when you think Watts is going to come out ahead, Haneke snatches it away with a pitiless, "Nope. This is what you wanted. Now sit the fuck down and watch."
this movie was truly disturbing, but it was unique...i admired it for that. a bit too depressing for my taste though.. there's enough of that in the real world

Watched this film yesterday. It's definitely not a .. entertaining film nor funny. But dammit, it's got to be one of the greatest films I've seen.
No other film I've seen is so disturbing and quite honestly, so uncomfortable.

@heavytomthumb might have been,w/o the rewind scene,turning a unique,excellent horror movie into your average POS&illustrating how important good editing is.I was enthralled,on the edge of my seat,then that shitty scene,I laughed&shook my head,soon left the theater,.Watching again,for the first time in years I'm so pissed-the worst scene in movie history-b/c it literally drops a movie from 4 stars to 2.The 2 only b/c of superb acting by Michael Pitt, Naomi Watts &Devon ? who played lil Georgie

@32Rainking I disagree. I think that Haneke makes a point of mocking the audience that can't get enough of sadism and pointless horror in cinema. So he takes his film, successfully involves the audience in the murder of this family by breaking the fourth wall, and then works on chipping away any hope of a happy ending whatsoever. Just when you think Watts is going to come out ahead, Haneke snatches it away with a pitiless, "Nope. This is what you wanted. Now sit the fuck down and watch."
