hmm so one of my friends is trying to get me started on ld but these comments don't rate this guy very high lol. where could i find a better LD tutorial
oh my...he chose happiness as his value??? That would be easily negated just by saying--being a mature adult does not nessicarily lead to happiness...WOW OK then...
Also, the time thing is another the speech length, its 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 with 4 minutes of prep time (as of halfway through the 2006-2007)although some tournaments still use three because not everyone has fully accepted the change. Basically, each side gets 13 minutes total of speaking time and 3 mnutes of questioning time with 4 minutes of prep time.
The Frederick Douglas thing isn't the only mistake. Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln didn't debate in the run for President, they debated for Governor of Illinois. The Lincoln-Douglas debates were a series of 7 debates that were held in 7 towns in Illinois. Ottawa on August 21, 1858, Freeport on August 27,1858, Jonesboro on September 15,1858, Charleston on September 18,1858, Galesburg on October 7,1858 Quincy on October 13,1858 and Alton on October 15, 1858.
Hey aang: if you are gonna be the Debate Police, at least have the right info. Douglas and Lincoln debated during the race for a Senate seat from Illinois, not the governorship.
Your sample resolution is not value-oriented and, therefore, not a good example of how to construct a case. As a former state champion in LD, I wish I could take you aside and teach you a little bit about LD.
Ummm...not sure if this is a circuit specific thing, don't see how it could be, but isn't it 6-7-4-6-3 for the times rather than 6-6-4-7-3? And the topic changes every two months.
soooooooooooo i was thrown into LD, and i have a tourney tomorrow, and i have no idea what the hell LD is. sooooo i thought maybe there'd be some examples on youtube? BUT NO. there was BETTER!
this is probably going to save my ass tomorrow. i also reallly love the dry humor. captain crunch. haha
I've seen this before. Lots of coaches do this. Unfortunately, watching this vid won't help you that much. You need raw practice and experience. I had found that out the hard way when I first started.
2: I went for 4 years (didn't finish the last semester) so I may not have a degree, but I'm statisticly in the group of college-educated people.
3: [Evidence] - Bill Gates is a college dropout, so statistics take you only so far. The extreme pieces of data in a sample, like myself and Bill Gates, must be thrown out or we skew the results. ; )
Value: Hmm, lets go with a tough one. Societal Order
Criterion: Education.
1: Statistics suggest that people with a higher education are genrally financially successful which keeps the economy in check.
2: Statistics show that people with a low education are involved in criminal like activities which are threats aimed at societies. You don't actually need 3 points if you're a pro like myself. ; )
Thanks for the video. I laughed out loud when you said "Not Michael Douglas" but it was really nice.

He's not telling you to use his case, he's telling you how to build it up. And explaining certain issues.
@Trooper,
This tutorial is fine.

It's Stephen Douglas. Even if he didn't know anyway, a good debater would do a little research before going public with information.

I think this guy is ld.

Why would he say Frederick???
Why wouldn't he make sure he knew that before making this video...?

Strictly speaking, it's 6-3-7-3-4-6-3. Still, each region has it's own permutations on each event.

Lawl, Frederick Douglas is an escaped slave who became an abolitionist activist.
Does anyone think this guy could sound more bland?

Wow, thanks! I'm a new debate coach with no experience, and this really helped to clarify things. You're a good teacher.
...Good topic by the way. I can tell you are personally invested in it.

I would just pack in lots of information for my case and would speak at 275 per minute. :D

hell yeah. Although to be honest, most of the LDers I've seen today have adapted speed talking as well.

"the more education you have, the richer, happier, and better off you are" so...what does that say about college dropouts like you?

Hmm.. but your two points, taken together, are a logical fallacy :)
avaporcelina 4 years ago
The only fallacy you could argue it to be is "non sequitur." Even so, it isn't. Feel free to point out how it is though. ;)
