I play Chet Atkins' 1960 arrangement of this when I'm out busking and it's the one song that gets more attention than any other. 2 weeks ago, a man walked by, heard me playing this, came back and said he couldn't believe I had played it as he'd just written a piece about his father introducing the young Austrian actor Erich Pohlmann to Carol Reed, who gave him the part of the barman in the film. Erich Pohlmann went on to be the voice of Ernst Blofeld in the Bond film From Russia With Love.
A well constructed song, such as this, can be performed in many different musical styles. I find most new versions slow it down, when the original was actually played up-tempo, which added a counterpoint to the heavy drama in the movie. This approach is not what you would normally think of for a sound track, which is one reason the movie is a classic.
I'm now checking out the various versions of this song on YouTube, and stuff like this continues to surprise me. I started with the Herb Alpert version (which I remembered, from the '60s) and am now on this one, previously unknown to me - after hearing the Beatles doing it too.
I love the Band. But this is the weirdest thing I have stumbled on today. I do like the idea that they were listening to and playing all kinds of things.
What a beautiful, dreamy rendition that was. I love The Band and have always admired what they contributed to popular music. There will never be the same.Have a special place in my heart for Garth Hudson- he seems to recapture music from 90 years ago.
just another example of why The Ramones were the worst thing that ever happened to pop music - give me musicians that are competent masters of their instuments any day
This is a very delightful rendition of The Harry Lime Theme. Its been around for years and still people ask to hear it. Started playing this when I was sevenyears old before I learned anything else. An old nostalgic piece of music. Thanks for posting .

This version is from the Band LP Moondog Matinee. It's full of all sorts of gems from other composers.

Your opening credits showing a wrong written name for the composer; the name of the guy was Anton KARAS instead of Akras ;-)
