Those were the days, I remember watching that Jets-Browns game. I like how the backdrop for the scores is blue for the NFC games, red for the AFC games, and green for the inter-conference games.
The week before the Pack decided to make the rare switch to white jerseys at Lambeau because they opened at home against Tampa Bay and heard about Vinny Testaverde's color-blindness and aversion to orange. The Bucs wore white at home in part because of the heat and in part to accomodate Vinny. Didn't matter because Tampa Bay won that day.
Seattle is the only current NFL franchise to have NEVER worn white jerseys for a home game.
@Mcnzlea The game in Tampa in 1989 was a CLASSIC... Jim & Max went crazy when Jacke booted the game winner as time expired. Chalk it up to 1989 Packer Majik!
Interesting dynamic here--this is the final season of the classic Brent/Irv NFL Today setup as Brent would be fired by CBS on 4/1/90. I associate these guys with the '70s and early-mid '80s as far as the NFL goes, and these highlights are filled with Aikman, Rypien, Irvin, and other guys who would be superstars in the '90s.
@cbaldwinjr In fairness to Brent, they opened the season with a 51-0 loss at home to Cleveland, and then got thrashed in this game. Myron Cope on an ecstasy trip couldn't have been optimistic about the Steelers at that point.
HAHA! Great analogy...I can ONLY imagine the late Myron Cope hopped up on E wavin' a Terrible Towel and talkin' about the greatness of Bubby Brister and Merril Hoge!
5:37 mark... "A 5 year contract extension to 1995" for Randall Cunningham.
Well, in 1995, Rodney Peete took over for Cunningham as the Eagles used a "West-Coast" offense. The next year, Cunningham went to the Vikings and had some success for a while, before being edged out by Jeff George in 1999. Then he had brief stints in Dallas and Baltimore before hanging it up in 2001.
LOL...some success? Dude was the MVP in 1998! The only thing stopping them from probably winning the Super Bowl in '98 was Gary Anderson's only miss of the season. I'd say he has 'some success'. lmao
steelers were outscored 91-10 in their first two games...then went 9-5 to close the year and make the playoffs...where they beat houston before losing a tough one to Denver.
It's kind of odd that the Packers wore their white uniforms for their home games early in the 89 season. They have always wear their green unifoms in Lambeau Field.
Anyway, i got the Packers-Saints game on DVD, and that was one hell of a game. Don "Majik Man" Majkowski was on fire in the 2nd half and rallied to lead the Packers to victory. Awesome! :)
@krierp8 Very weird. The only two times we've worn white at home (at least in the modern era of the past 50 years or so, was this game, and the prior week, at Lambeau Field against Tampa Bay to open the '89 season.
@krierp8 I also have that Packers/Saints game! One of the rare classics from the 80s Packers. Majkowski completed 18 straight in the second half to come back and win. And you're right, it's quite strange to see the Packers in their white uniforms at Lambeau. I'm glad they haven't done that since.
5:50-5:55-- Nice side shot of the studio and desk as the "NFL Today" title animates in and the stars go into it. And one more thing-- the "NFL Today" halftime reports then were not sponsored as they are today; the only real sponsorship of halftime shows on CBS then was on college football and the NBA, both by The Prudential (one was the College Football Report, the other was At the Half).

I was at the Seahawks- Cardinals game in 1989. I will always remember that it was Brian Bosworth's final game in his short pro career.

Cleveland had 12 takeaways in the first two weeks??? Wow!

Didn't Pittsburgh make the playoffs in '89...guess that long year prognostication by Musburger was a little off.

The "Baseball in DC!" sign at the 0:30 mark... some 16 years later, that became reality.

@mrwrestlingtape1 Yes, that's considered one of the great comebacks in Packer team history.

eagles and wash played a game for the ages (I think) - ridiculous break late in the 4th quarter but that was just the way it happened
