Hey I have 2 1200's from like 30 years ago.. never been oiled. One of them just about every revolution of the platter at one point it slows down (every so many seconds).. which obviously wrecks havoc when I'm trying to mix. I've no idea what it needs, maybe some oil.. if you have any thoughts on what my problem may be I'd really appreciate it! Thanks for the great video!!
hi, I gor a problem with my turntable, got the top off like the, um,, thingy :) underneath the lp itslef and i'm at the radars-wheels and I got some sort off elastic thing off and I don't now how to but it back it's an AKAI idunno, but it's pretty new.
I hope you can get some sence out off this shitty comment :P
awesome job, i have been experiencing kinda like the same problem, i watched your video about changing the pitch control, i was successful but i still have a issue with my 12's whereby if i play it for about a half hour it loses its pitch and doesnt pick up the pitch, i use serato, so if say the bpm of a record is 90 and i put it on plus 8 it gives me a 92 bpm so its very frustrating. any ideas on what this could be? i already put in a new pitch. thnx for your help the videos are very helpful

LOL, i have a turntable (a Dual 704), which is a real bugger inside. All micro-mechanics are hard to understand, and i got bad luck to break the mechanism, that automatically starts the plate to turn around.
@86Ivar i didn't say they were actually brushes i know induction motors don't have brushes, i had trouble trying to explain it SIMPLE so any one can understand and i didn't explain it very well i understand that and if you can do a better job there is a little link there that says " video response" but try and use only your content or youtube may remove it.
if your going to leave comments like that make sure you have a better video to back it up with, just some friendly advice...
as for your question, there is actually no difference between the 1200 and the 1210 just the color, 1200 are silver and 1210 are black. so it wouldn't matter witch ones you get, if you can get the mark 5's thats wicked. but this also applies to the mark 2's, 1210 or 1200 only difference is the color.
hope this helped thanks again for your comment and your kind words.
fella you dont use grease on the spindle!!!!!!!!!! you use sowing machine oil becuase its a super light......your decks need 2-3 drop on the spindle every 3-4 years!!!!!!! and you should never over lubricate???!!! oo er misses!!lol!!!
basically your video is how to service and not improving the torque at all........sorry!!
Hi, sorry to say, but seldomly I´ve seen so much rubbish on a pyle! None of the measurenments increases torque, not even by a Jota. The only way to increase torque is to increase the current in the drive coils of the motor! The toroid magnet doesn´t loose force as long as it isn´t heated in a fire or breaks completely.
2:35 is the single most sensible sentence in the whole video! "Be careful...!"
As Timetec already mentioned those white rectangles generate the signals to drive the motor.
Apart from cleaning (which has no other function but just to give a good optical impression) leave those parts alone! If You crack just one of the delicate wires the motor won´t work any more!
If You still decide to open the device´s main bearing because the spindle doesn´t turn smoothly any more, You have to clean it properly. This means of course to wipe old oil off and apply new oil.
If there is so much dirt that is so greasy that it actually influences speed stability the bearing must(!) be cleaned. Only applying additional new oil is of no help.
So wipe off the old oil with a lint free cloth and a bit of cleaning alcohol. Inspect the axis and the small thrustplate the axis sits on as well as the inner surface of the bearing sleeve. There shouldn´t be any signs of wear like small scratches.
Very nice video, thanks ;) - the white 'brushes' you point out @ 2:10, are actually feedback pickup coils - they return rotational speed pulses back to the quartz phase-locked loop motor controller / driver. Cleaning them, will has no affect on the motor torque - they are simply magnetic sensors.
hi this was a great help! i just bought secondhand 1210's an i was just wondering do u have any tips to get the dots on the platters clean... it doesn't affect anyway to my mixes but i like the dots clean n' shiny... lol...
hi sorry i took so long to reply been very busy lately, theirs a few ways you can clean the platter depending on how dirty your platter is depends on how harsh the cleaning method to start with take the platter off and try a damp scouring pad that was enough for my old 1200 if not try using some soap if not try some very mild metal polish, normally the scouring pad is enough but what ever method make sure you let the platter dry thoroughly before you put it back thanks for comment.
@viperfrank fella you DO NOT grease the spindle on record players..lol!!!!!! because grease has to much resistance hence you use oil and a 1210 needs 2-3 drops of oil every 3 years depending on how much you use them....I rang up technics to ask about purchasing some oil from them at ten pounds for a 20ml bottle!!!!! and the rep told me not to bother and said, just use sowing machine oil because its the same viscosity.......the clip you refer to is a cir clip the bearing(brass tube ) is a bush
HI niru1985 thanks for the positive comment, as for your question for grease you could use low melt grease or sometimes known as general purpose grease just not copper grease or lithium grease, if you can get hold of some castrol LM grease - that's what i use. for oil you could use 3 in 1 oil or cooking oil like sunflower or vegetable oil, hope this helped thanks again for the comment.
yo, sorry i took ages to reply my computer broke down over the week end so i couldn't go on it but to answer your question, if you mean the face plate you can change them but thats actually the main part of a technics turntable everything bolts to Thant so if you change it technically you might as well change the turntable, but you can buy covers that go over the whole face plate some of them are very funky, i think if you just google it you'll find them, thanks for the comment btw
I was one of the 5 who emailed, so first off a big thank you for taking the time do do this, another Great video mate! Began work on my 1210s today but I'm having a bit of trouble. The two screws on the centre spindle will not come out lol the heads are good on em just been there about 10 years so I am gonna have to try sort them. Secondly mine looks a different, under that top plate mine has a plastic cog in it. Is it needed, any chance it would work better without as yours is pictured?
I like how those SL-1200s are made to be easily serviced. 5 stars!

My technics are fine, I just wanted to see how they are built underneath - not cobwebs and magic after-all !
Great vid, you really know your stuff.

Apply a few drops of new oil and gently(!) put the axis back into the sleeve and screw the thrustplate on. Now the axis should turn very smooth.
